Piss Poor PIP?

How do you rate IPS's PIP program? Does it really do any good?

  1. On paper, it is a good program and can be valuable if the administrator follows the guidelines worked out by IPS and IEA. Most administrators have no clue as to how to utilize the PIP. Many simply want to wave their magic wands and the teacher is gone. That is not the way it works. I have seen weak teachers shape up quickly once placed on a PIP and I have seen others gone who did not take it seriously. It is not a discipline tool but rather a last chance for an underperforming teacher to improve and do the job. If only the administrators were not too spineless to use it more often.

  2. I agree totally with you...There are some principals who need to be put on a PIP and Tina Foster should be at the top of the list.

  3. I agree with the first post. Theoretically, the PIP process should work; however, unless the administrators implement the PIP process with total integrity to the process as designed, it does not work.

The PIP requires an administrator to do many things: 1) to have courage, 2) to have the ability to document faithfully every encounter with the teacher, 3) to observe the teacher with fairness, 4) to treat the entire process as confidential, 5) to possess a ready supply of instructional hints designed to help the teacher, 6) to act as a mentor for the teacher, not in a punitive manner, 7) to possess an open mind that it's truly possible for the teacher to become competent, 8) to cast aside all preconceived notions that this teacher is worthless, no good, etc.

Seldom, if ever, have I observed the PIP process implemented properly in IPS. For many principals, it's a matter of "one and done", one mistake and it's a done deal that you're outta here because I don't like you, and I never will.

It's easier for many principals to sleuth around and try to find some dirt on the teacher and then get them fired because, for example, they use the computer too much, they did not show up for their hall duty on time, they were tardy to school by 5 minutes on three separate days, etc.

  4. OMG!!!! I just heard on Channel 8 that Mitch is requesting resumes from those interested in being superintendents of education in Indiana.

  5. Maybe Eugene White will submit one.....more likely, his replacment is being sought by Mitch........

  6. Does anyone know about all of the principal switches? Apparently, evil Dr. Johnson and her monochromatic henchman Joan called a bunch of principals and assistants in on Friday and told them the news. They also told them not to speak of where they were going, and made them sign a paper demanding secrecy. While this is important, it's hardly FBI clearance material.

  7. IPS continues to thrive and operate on high drama, pseudo-classified materials, and more 'smoke and mirrors'. What a crock of you know what.

These central office administrators would make great guests on the Jerry Springer Show with all their need for drama which makes them feel important.

  8. You're right. With the current administration of White, Johnson and Harrel, et al, it's like working at The Firm.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

Is this true or just an April Fool's joke? I kind of think it's the latter because there is nothing about it on the Channel 8 website.

  11. If it's true, then it doesn't bother me one way or the other. In fact, a strong MBA candidate for the IPS Superintendent's position would serve us well as a district.

Actually, there are Superintendents in the Eastern Coastal areas of the US who have MBA's from Duke and UNC/Chapel Hill, along with their credentials for being a Superintendent. I worked in one of those districts. There were/still are over 80,000 students in this particular school district. There are NO shenanigans in this district, trust me. BS does not last long in a school district operated by a person with a MBA from a reputable university.

I remember when this particular Superintendent was hired and arrived in the district. There was a total shake-up or shake-down in the central office, whichever term you prefer. This man brought his own staff with him; the old boys were out in a nano-second. The new administrative staff took over and things took off for the better. Teachers were not fired; central office administrators were let go. We should be so lucky in IPS.

By the way, the Superintendent I speak of does NOT make as much money as Eugene White.

  14. You mean Dr. Hunter at School #15 is taking his bling trip to Taiwan......He has done more international traveling this year......but the school runs better when he is not there so maybe the school board can keep using taxpayers money for him to travel the world.

  15. PIPs must not work. I still have a job. My kids' test scores suck, so I must be an ineffective "teacher".

Will we be able to get Tasers for classroom control? Of course, they would only be used on children weighing more than fifty pounds.

  16. 60% of us are ineffective teachers so join the club....why can't we all be wonderful like Eugene White????

  17. What is the percentage of principals that aren't doing their job by allowing their building to be out of control. Kids running in the halls and noisy, noisy, and noisy. It's obvious in one building the principal doesn't follow the six step discipline. Students who should have been put out of school continue to have six, seven, and eight chances. If the six step discipline was followed I bet the building would be quiet and under control. And the bullying students would be gone.

Yes, principals were called in and some were switched around but think about how many principals are retiring! Those principals have to be replaced, right? No one had to sign a secrecy pact.

  20. The principal at Tech High School has allowed that campus to get out of control....and her discipline deans do not enforce or do not understand Dr. White's 6 step discipline policy.

  21. It was a glorious week at school 15 with Casey Gibson in charge!

  22. In case you don't read the Slow Boat to China thread... Hunter's trip was at the expense of the Taiwanese government. Sorry but if someone's going to get thrown under the bus... I prefer it be for legitimate reasons. And I agree... Casey is awesome- level headed and compassionate.

  23. I love and appreciate Dr. White. For all of you who don't leave it will cure your misery.
