Weed Them Out?

The news this morning is talking about how two area school district employees, one in Carmel and one in Lawrence, have been arrested on child molestation charges. Do we need tougher standards on hiring and more background checks to keep these predators out of our classrooms? How does union contracts and discipline? What do you suggest?

  1. How does union contracts and discipline _____?
You are missing a clause there. Also, 'union contracts and discipline' is a plural noun phrase, so you need the plural form of the verb in your sentence.
I suggest you spend more time brushing up on your grammar so that your students can respect you as a teacher. Perhaps you would have less time to whip up ignorant but sensational posts like these.

  2. Besides, the two men arrested were NOT classroom teachers. IPS's volunteers only have to pass a Marion County check.

Another headline reported that the first of three bad police officers received 17 years in jail for drug involvement. I'll assume IPD's background checks are a bit more stringent that those used to screen educators.

There are bad apples in any profession.

  3. First, one guy was called the "owner of the swim team". I am not sure what that means. The guy in Carmel was referred to as a a "paid volunteer". I think that if you are paid then you are a employee and not an employee. In either case neither man was a teacher.

  4. This is off the subject but I think it is important. We have a teacher in our building who has been sick for the last two weeks ( on and off ). She finally was found out that she had the swine flu. And get this...she came into school this morning for a short period of time.

  5. Her principal was probably harrassing her for lowering the attendance percentage of the faculty.

  6. How about the teacher who came in early to do lesson plans, left and called in sick.

  7. Consider how much money IPS ultimately would save in sub salaries if it provided access for employees to receive the H1N1 flu shots. I'm not talking about free shots, but rather, I'm speaking about making arrangements with the Marion County Health Department to administer these flu shots at designated IPS sites for interested employees. This would not be mandatory, of course, but it would be a voluntary proactive measure to keep the teachers healthy and on the job.

  8. I've come in early and done lesson plans, sometimes a sub just can't do what you do, and it is to crucial that it be done correctly.

Last year I went to workshop and spent hours preparing the lesson plans, so anyone could do them, complete with DVD lessons, with start and stop times outlined in the plans. The sub followed the plan the first day, then showed Mulan the rest of the week. I can assure you the words "show a Disney movie, like Mulan" never appeared in my plans.

Sub plans need to be easy and basically foolproof.

  9. Back on topic, these two men were not teachers. By the way, has anyone heard the outcome of the Lee Tibbetts incident from last spring? Has his trial been held?

  10. You mean the incident that Jane Ajabu and Eugene White did nothing and tried to hide from the public????

    ReplyDelete
  11. Actully, I believe you mean the incident Jeff White did nothing about, therefore allowing said teacher to then remain at John Marshall.

  12. Actually Jeff White requested that the teacher be removed from his building and human resourcs refused......let's put the onus where it belongs.....

  13. This teacher was also an IEA building co-rep at Marshall. Let's not leave that out either. Following the initial accusation, the union supported him to the fullest. That's why he remained as long as he did.

  14. Jeff White NEVER asked that the teacher be removed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. He asked in WRITING for the removal....ask Human Resources for a copy!!

  16. Tibbets was assigned to an IPS alternative school the year before he was sent to John Marshall. There was a reason he was sent to Marshall; the alternative school principal didn't want him on his staff for reasons not made public, so he was shuffled off to Marshall.

  17. No such copy exists because no such request was ever made.

  18. I worked at Marshall. White requested to Prudence Bridgewaters to remove Tibbetts. This was not a secret at Marshall. Come clean Prudence.

  19. Tibbetts' trial has been postponed until January. It is likely that many of the fine folks mentioned in this particular blog topic will be invited to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Prudence don't plan any trips in January. I hope they don't ask you about that party at Pearl's while you are under oath.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why didn't you put your request in writing to HR,Jeff?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Let's wait until the trial and see what is produced. It will show what HR and Eugene tried to hide.

  23. Please re-read the post "Focus People" Dated Tuesday July 21, 2009. This specific post Weed Them Out has been about a specific teacher and several adminstrators. Talking about teachers and adminstrators by specific name can be deemed "Slander" This blog could have the potiential of helping teachers but has turned into a "He Said, She Siad" blog site. Talking about adminstrators like Dr. Bridgewaters-has it made anyone's job better? Has it changed anything in IPS? The blog creator was correct in his/her previous post about staying focused maybe they should run it again to remind everyone. Talking about other people in a negative light doesn't help anyone. There are a lot of positive things that go on in schools everyday why can't anyone focus on those?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with trying to focus on the positive, but this blog has also become a much needed place to vent our many frustrations. However, I do think it is unwise, perhaps downright stupid, to refer to people by name.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So are you saying we should ignore the problems?

    ReplyDelete
  26. There are many administrators who have never been discussed here. That is because they are doing their jobs and treat staff, parents, and students with respect and courtesy. Those who are called out are frequently rude, elitist and spend much of their time bad mouthing teachers to make Eugene happy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Teachers we must remember that principals are under stress as well. Who needs to be weeded out is Dr. White, he has set the tone of degrading his teachers and the moral in IPS is low.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And what will it take to make that happen?

    ReplyDelete
  29. A new school board....Eugene owns a majority of this school board.....they are his lapdogs!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's morale, not moral.

    ReplyDelete
  31. How about finding the Dr. an offer he can't refuse.

    ReplyDelete
  32. morale/morals, this could be a Freudian slip, because both are at an all time low.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why does Dr White own the school board? Does he have some kind of dirt on them? I don't get it. I keep thinking one of the board members will stop him, yet, no one ever does.

Did you, poster above, want clarification on the writer's question or did you just want to attack?
