Did IPS Screw Itself?
If IPS was hoping that the "improving" graduation rates would stave off a state takeover, forget it! The state is supposedly really ticked off that IPS might have manipulated its graduation rates to make things look better and that's just motivated them more to take over part of the district. Hope you like your new bosses; Mitch Daniels and Tony Bennett.

"IPS might have manipulated its graduation rates...."
ReplyDeleteMight have?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
WTF??????????
I don't think IPS screwed itself by manipulating the graduation rates because IPS was already screwed. I don't think this made one bit of difference in the state takeover. It was going to happen before. It's still going to happen. But now, some of these big-wigs have some b.s. accomplishments to add to their resume for their new jobs. Let them have it. They need all the help they can get. It's going to be tough to find a new administrator job after losing your old job to a state takeover.
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily ... look at Tony Bennet's job after being in charge of a failing district
ReplyDeleteThe books were cooked on graduation rates so Eugene could qualify for a $5000 bonus. If only he would use that money to buy some age appropriate and weight appropriate clothing.
ReplyDeleteI am tired of different folks beating down Dr. White and his weight problem. What about Mary Louis, she is one large hefer and the short skirts she wears, could turn any man gay. Someone needs to show her how to dress for the business community. Stop looking like a working girl on Washington Street, show some class.
ReplyDeleteOff topic.....What happened to the 70 teachers called downtown for the cheating investigation?
ReplyDeleteIf she worked Washington Street, she would starve.
ReplyDeleteLike I said in the other thread, my day to day will not be significantly different whether things are run by central office or things are run by the state. Of course, I hope I'm wrong. I hope things are so drastically improved under the new regime that my day-to-day changes dramatically. But that's not realistic. And neither are the doom-and-gloom predictions.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the teachers called to the Education Center and I lied under oath with a solid stern face. Dr. White was so impressed that I now have a job called Ethics in Testing Teacher on Special Assignment.
ReplyDeleteIf we are in fact taken over by "the state", will we have the same lack of successful AYPs that Tony Bennett's system earned?
ReplyDeleteWhich state will overtake us then? Kentucky?
I, too, was one of the teachers called in. I also lied under oath and was given a huge bonus! I love I.P.S.!
ReplyDelete"I now have a job called Ethics in Testing Teacher on Special Assignment."
ReplyDeleteI get it.....so, you're safe. If not, your job would be Ethics in Teaching TOSA.
"We are the poster who talks in pleural."
ReplyDeleteThis is the Grammar Police. Please pull over.
Poster should be posters, talks should be talk.
I'm only issuing two warnings. I'll be writing two citations if I catch you both in the future.
I said it that way on purpose. The correct way changes the meaning.
ReplyDeleteI'm the spelling police. Unless you're speaking of tissues in chest cavities, I believe you mean to type PLURAL. If it is in fact pleural, please go to clarianb-s.blogspot.com

To give due credit, the "two citations" joke WAS funny. :)
ReplyDeleteI said it that way on purpose.
ReplyDeleteDon't you mean WE?
Okay, the grammar error was on purpose, the spelling error was NOT. I apparently really did not know how to spell it. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't intended to be funny. You did make two errors in your message: one in poster, one in talk.
ReplyDeleteI calls 'em as I sees 'em. It's my job.
"I apparently really did not know how to spell it."
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an honest statement. Does it belong on this blog?
Oh hell. What if I follow it up with a personal insult and some gossip?
ReplyDeletePlease don't. I was just hoping you and I teach together. We now know there are TWO sane adults employed by IPS.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who thinks that things will not change for the worse if the state takes over is delusional. Do some research and see what the state MAY do when they take over a school. It is not encouraging especially when the state superintendent is one who ran a failing school system before being elected as superintendent for the entire state.
ReplyDeleteI'm so confused! One of you thinks I am a sane adult and another thinks I am delusional!

ReplyDeleteMy friend in Florida saves news articles about that state's sad decrease in educational excellence. Bennett has his nose up Jeb Bush's buttcrack. Grading schools and issuing bonuses hasn't worked, and NCLB is one year away from being scrapped.
Check out the St. Petersburg Times Education sections.
The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteThey could sing better too
ReplyDeleteRock and roll is a passing fad. So is education reform.
ReplyDeleteHey Gene!
ReplyDeleteLast year, it was "Shake it off and step up."
Here's one for next August:
PADDLE FASTER !!!!!!!! I HEAR BANJOS !!!!!!!
"Bennett has his nose up Jeb Bush's buttcrack. Grading schools and issuing bonuses hasn't worked, and NCLB is one year away from being scrapped."
ReplyDeleteBringing Jeb Bush in to talk about education is like bringing in Al Sharpton to talk about race relations. Same crap!
I wish we were at a gambling table because I would walk away a millionaire. I do not believe for one second that the state will take over ANY school in IPS. How would they explain their failure in not being able to turn the IPS schools around? They are politicians whose butts would be kicked out of office if they did not put their money where their mouths were. They can not do it ( change IPS)!
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't walk away a millionaire. This isn't a going-to-happen versus not-going-to-happen. This is already happening. There are plans, there are "turnaround management organizations" in place and "local education agencies" consulted.

P.S. The word I was supposed to type to post (to verify I'm a human) was "whory" Just thought that was funny in a sophomoric sort of way. :)
They even know who their new principals are going to be and probably have selected who are they are going to bring in to replace teachers. I have read what happens in others states when the state takes over and it is not pretty. A person's ability and performance is the least of their concerns. They want "their" people in there. I am afraid that I will be without a job soon through no fault of my own.
ReplyDeleteThere aren't enough unemployed teachers available to put all of IPS out of work. If you're worried, add Math, Science, and/or Special Ed to your credentials. The takeover isn't supposed to take place until 2012, so there's still time.
ReplyDeleteThe state is not planning on taking over all of IPS. They are taking over only a few schools. People working at those schools are the ones in danger of losing their jobs.
ReplyDeleteThey can't staff John Marshall as it is (there have been ads on the IDOE for months). Where are all the new-hires going to come from?
ReplyDelete"I am afraid that I will be without a job soon through no fault of my own."
ReplyDeleteThen by all means STOP electing these clowns. You knew what they stood for. I'm sick of teachers voting based on what their husbands tell them. Their husbands don't know anything about education issues. Educators only have themselves to blame for this mess.
OMG! First of all, teachers aren't the only ones who vote. Second of all, what sexist garbage to think that female teachers vote based on what their husbands tell them. Third, who exactly could people have voted for to change NCLB or to improve IPS' AYP status?
ReplyDeleteBoth of Eugene's candidates for board LOST this year and if someone had run against Michael Brown, he would have lost also. In 2012, the rest of the bobble head puppets on the board will be up for re election and I predict that the voters, parents, and community leaders will not return them to the board. That includes the big haired one who has been on there forever and the one who lied to the parents, students and staff at School 48. {Gore}

And you say that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus? Right. The quotes above make a lot more sense than "Love your neighbor...I am come that they might have life more abundant...Forgive them for they know not what they do...I wept....Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted" -- just a few of the sayings of Jesus that have endured for 2000 years. But, then, Jesus never sought to be popular - He only sought to die for humanity...
Yeah...people will still be basing their lives on the teachings of the Beatles 2000 years from now.
@ "And you say..." I'm sorry, I believe you did not understand that the Jesus reference was borrowed from a John Lennon comment from the 1960's. Perhaps if you understood the context, you would not feel the need to debate this. hmmm
ReplyDeleteJeez, are you really that out of touch with pop culture. That was a very famous quote from the 60's. No need to start thumping your Bible.
ReplyDeleteI'm 27 and I knew that quote what is wrong with you? By the way I tell my husband who to vote for. NOT the other way around.

The Beatles might still be bigger than Jesus
The fervour surrounding the Fab Four has reached near-religious proportions, argues Nigel Farndale.
Footsteps of history: the Abbey Road crossing is so popular with tourists that it has become the first road marking to earn listed status Photo: APPLE CORPSBy Nigel Farndale 8:00AM GMT 26 Dec 2010

How curious: the zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios has become one of London's most popular attractions and, in recognition of this, has been awarded listed status, a first for a road marking. This follows the decision by the National Trust to preserve for the nation the Beatles' childhood homes. Where is all this going?
Ironically, given what John Lennon said in 1966 about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, the band does now seems to have a quasi-religious function. Can a Beatles Day be far away? Perhaps we could use Boxing Day, as no one is really sure what today is for anyway, and it does begin with a B.
And what about Liverpool? John Lennon Airport was a solid start, but why not go the extra mile and rename the town Beatles-by-Sea? The signs for Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields have, after all, become places of pilgrimage, while the Cavern is now a shrine where worshippers go and light candles.
The envelopes on which John and Paul jotted down their lyrics regularly sell for a million pounds or more. Why? Because these are holy relics. Fragments of the true cross. You can imagine the tour guides of the future: "This is the very zebra crossing upon which the four hairy messiahs trod, and verily, it came to pass that St Paul did go barefoot, though the pavement was cold."
What's really strange is that, as Lennon tried to explain at the time, if you compare church attendance with the number of people buying Beatles records, they are more popular, in a way. Forty years after they disbanded, the Fab Four still dominate American and European popular culture. They are still in the charts, still selling records in the same quantities they have always sold them. In fact, they are selling more than ever before. Their sales passed the billion mark 10 years ago and – thanks to the remastered collection that came out last year and the long-awaited release of their catalogue on iTunes last month – people are buying their records again and again, even though they already own them on vinyl, tape and CD. There may be two billion or so Christians in the world, but how many keep buying copies of the Bible, year after year?
It may not be nice but I don't believe you. I think you had never heard that quote which is why you responded with such an off the wall, off base and vitriolic response. Being 27 does not mean you are aware and understand pop culture. You are evidence of that.
ReplyDeleteI think the 27-year-old was talking TO the bible thumper. I don't think he/she IS the bible thumper.
ReplyDeleteO.M.G. who the hell cares?
ReplyDeleteGet over yourselves and let's talk about how to fix IPS.
Or their website.
ReplyDeleteum, I'm the 27 year old and yes I was talking to the bible thumper. I LOVE the Beatles and have known that quote since I was about 12.
ReplyDeleteI am always shocked that I have students who don't know who the Beatles are and it surprised me that the Bible thumper had never heard that quote.
I did know the quote and was responding now like I felt back then...but even if I had not known the quote, the sentiment would have been the same. The point was that not many famous people affect history beyond a generation or two and I do not believe the Beatles have ever caused someone to build a hospital, an orphanage, give up their belongings to serve the poor, or choose to live their lives putting others before themselves. They have lasted 50 some years...not 2010,
ReplyDeleteSo, "album thumper" don't be so defensive. By the way, sales of the Bible still "top the charts" year after year in book sales.
Enough said, Jesus does not need me or anyone else to defend Him.
