IPS ALERT!!!

Two IPS students were arrested this week for bringing weapons on school property.

In the first incident, a 15-year-old freshman at Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School was arrested Nov. 4 for allegedly showing an unloaded handgun to students. The weapon was discovered after school when a coach was told by students that the ninth-grader was showing off the unloaded .38-caliber revolver in the weight room. The student gave the weapon to the coach after confessing it was in his possession. The student also showed the gun to classmates while in the cafeteria, but no students came forward to staff at that time. At no time did the student threaten anyone with the gun.The student was arrested for carrying a handgun without a license and possessing a firearm on school property. He is currently suspended pending expulsion. "Attucks is a safe campus, and working together our students, parents and staff will keep it that way," said Principal Robert Faulkens.

On Nov. 5, an Arsenal Technical High School police officer stopped a 16-year-old student to question him about a fight that had occurred on campus two days earlier. The officer searched the student and found a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun loaded with one bullet. The student, a sophomore, was arrested for carrying a handgun without a license, possessing a firearm on school property, and dangerous possession of a firearm for carrying a loaded handgun on IPS property.

The student also was identified as having participated in the fight earlier in the week. He also was charged with disorderly conduct and rioting. "This arrest should send a message to students that carrying a handgun on campus is a one-way ticket to jail," said Principal Sarah Bogard. "We won't tolerate any activity that will put students, staff or visitors at risk."

  1. And,the point of this posting is what??? This kind of dangerous activity is happening all over our city...not just in IPS. Scary, but common!

  2. I would venture to guess there are dozens of firearms in IPS schools on a regular basis that never get discovered. The world we live in has become a dangerous place. We all need to be aware of our surroundings at all times as well as being alert to suspicious behavior. It is a shame that responsible legal firearms owners are prohibited from protecting themselves while the criminals continue to be a danger to everyone.

  4. This is another example of the lack of focus of Eugene White, Jane Kendrick, and other within the regime. They have to go!!!

  5. Sounds like it's time to use some of that $440K+ Safe and Secure Schools government grant money. Spend some of that money on metal detectors at the entrance to each IPS high school. Sure, it might slow the morning entrance to schools, but I'd rather be slowed down than gunned down.

A couple of wind bag principals telling us that 'at no time was anyone in danger, yada-yada-yada' does not make the school safe and secure.

  6. Ya'll are so pitiful.

IPS is bashed if information isn't sent out (in your pitiful mind)a timely fashion; Or the info is timely sent out to cover the asses of most secondary building administrators.

The same new release is givent to the bldg. principal. They, afterall, are responsb
Here's an ASIDE: How are incidents of a student's

  7. While it is absolutely illegal and dangerous to take a weapon to school, Tech High School is so out of control and fights are so commonplace that I understand while a student would think he needed some protection. Until Bogard demands that the rules and policies are followed and the disruptive element is dealt with, this will continue to happen. She has no clue.

  10. Just like I don't like the idea that teachers can be held accountable for attendance, I don't see how we can hold IPS administration accountable for weapons being brought to school.

First of all building security has never been a priority. Every IPS school I have ever visited is wide open, knock at a door and some kid will let you in, or buzz at the door and you are in and unchecked unless you actually report to the office. In my previous school system all doors were alarmed and if you opened them an alarm would go off. There was one single entrance and it was actually monitored by a human being who checked you in and determined your business at the school.

This is a system issue, not a building level issue.

What I have seen is a decent response to weapons brought to schools. Last year I believe there was a loaded gun at BRHS and it was handled in a calm and rational manner. The entire school, and all the students were searched in less then two hours.

Just like attendance, the teacher needs to have interesting and relevant lessons to engage the student so they want to come to school, there is a certain degree of responsibility on the part of administration. They need to insure that students feel safe at school, and that fighting is not tolerated. However we are in a rapidly changing society, and fighting has become all to common place. I certainly don't know the answer here but you would think with all the administrators we have downtown someone would be able to come up with a plan.

  11. A teacher cannot make students feel safe at school when the discipline deans and the principal ignore the discipline policy and refuse to deal with disruptive volatile students. They simply tell them to behave and return them to class to disrupt again. There are no consequences for serious misbehavior, cussing at teachers, threats to other students or teachers or even attacks. Until that happens IPS students in some of our schools should not feel safe. Tech High School is one of those schools.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Its the teachers fault, as the teacher needs to have interesting and relevant lessons to engage the student so don't want to bring a gun to school. Ask the fools running Shortridge and Arlington, that is their opinion and standard they have placed on teachers. If students come to school armed then is no responsibility of the administration, just the teachers.

  13. The reason the gun issue was handled correctly was because of Donna, who was running the show, not the blob on the rolling chair. Linda Davis was a mess, unprofessional, and horrible, maybe she needed a few drinks to calm her nerves?

  14. Mary Louise BewleyNovember 06, 2009

Well, this post confirms it. Jeff White is your "IPS Teacher" blogmaster. How do I know? Because this post is EXACTLY as I wrote it in the media advisory sent out Thursday afternoon. No media outlet reproduces a media advisory or press release with exactly the same words, so it wasn't copied from a media website or newspaper article. Interestingly, this is the second IPS press release to be sent to media that has been posted to this blog. More interestingly, these posts have only occurred since Abdul Hakim-Shabazz was added to the IPS media list. And who is Abdul's friend? Why, the disgruntled Jeff White himself! Yep, this blog is Jeff's baby, which means it has zero credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Even if it is Jeff White, why does that mean he has zero credibility? When he was at JM, things were improving. It has gone to hell in a handbasket, especially with morale of the staff. Why does the current principal there have 17 grievances against him?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mary Louise, dont you ever get tired of making excuses and lying for Eugene White. .....I have no idea if it is Jeff White or not but everyone knows that Marshall was improving under White until meddling by people like the much hated Prudence Bridgewaters. MARY LOUISE, please instead of making excuses tell us why IPS cannot pay teachers on time, with the correct amount of pay and do it by direct deposit...IPS should be embarrassed by the Payroll Department.

    ReplyDelete
  17. "Why does the current principal there have 17 grievances against him?" (quote from above)

You are kidding, right? Seventeen grievances against the principal? Give us details.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If you are indeed Mary Louise, why would even comment on this blog? If you were trying for an Ah Ha moment, it went bust.

    ReplyDelete
  19. As a friend of the blog master, this is not Jeffrey White's blog... Give up Mary Louise!!! You will never find out who we are...

  20. I thank the people who own the blog. As a tenured teacher, it feels good seeing central office nervous for a change. The carpet munchers and have cat hair clogging their throats.

  21. funny how anyo

  22. Dear "I thank the people who own the blog..." above,
I appreciate what you have to say and agree with almost everything that is posted on this blog especially when it hits downtown where it hurts. However, as a well-respected teacher who happens to also be a lesbian, I am asking that you please stop the "carpet muncher" comments. We all know that sexual orientation has nothing to do with the stupidity that the women you refer to exhibit on a daily basis. Please try to understand that using that slur is no different and is just as offensive as using the "N" word when referring to African-American individuals. I am on your side. I believe that the lesbian administrators to whom you refer should be removed from our school system - not because they are "carpet munchers" but because they are incompetent, vindictive, dishonest, and unethical. Please at least consider refraining from using that term in this public forum as doing so is very hurtful to your colleagues who are honest, dedicated, and concerned teachers who just happen to also be gay. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree except that it is almost to the point where you must be a lesbian to get a job in the Education Center. Just as no one should be denied a job because of sexual orientation, it is also wrong to get a job because of the lesbian network. The list in the Ed. Center is a mile long and many of them were failing teachers and only got the job because of their connections. Then look at the instructional coaches...the sign network applies there also.

    ReplyDelete
  24. {{Then look at the instructional coaches...the sign network applies there also.}}}

Does that mean that lots of instructional coaches are lesbians?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also agree that sexual orientation should not be considered for a job. However, the network has to be distroyed because they have ruined the system. Therefore, as for the "carpet muncher" comments, hit them where it hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Please remember not to send anything from your IPS laptops. Keep the insults going. Since we can't strike, we will insult.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Look at the list of instructional coaches and come to your own conclusion.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Please know that Central Office looks at this blog often. They talk about it frequently. They themselves do not look at it, but they have cronies that do.
We need to keep this blog going in a professional manner. It is making some sort of impact if people keep reading and responding.

I feel sorry for Mary Louise. How pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Within IPS there are several mafias, whose sole purpose seems to be to promote members of the group into positions of power and to insure they keep using that power to keep other groups down.

It is quite open in some instances, look at the hostility to white women teachers. There is an administrator who openly says black kids need to be taught by black teachers, and white teachers can't teach black kids.

It is time for this to END.

"The problem of power is how to achieve its responsible use rather than its irresponsible and indulgent use - of how to get men of power to live for the public rather than off the public."
    Robert F. Kennedy

"The sole advantage of power is that you can do more good."
Baltasar Gracian, The Art of Worldly Wisdom, 1647

This is the problem with IPS, the use of power that does not coincide with the mission of our system, to educate children.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Who cares if Jeff White is the blogmaster? I am still able to be open-minded and hopeful about IPS even after reading this blog daily. Why? First of all,it has empowered me quite a bit. I had no idea of what has been going on behind the scenes--I'be heard rumors for years--but finally, the rumors have been verified. The truth hurts, but the truth is also the first step to real change.
Also 17 grievances against the current Marshall principal? It does not surprise me. Wait, the school year is not over yet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The former students from Shortridge would NOT understand why someone with the attitude that black students should be taught by black teacher would be principal of this fine school.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The new Shortridge is an embarrassment to the old Shortridge. Shortridge always represented a good example of racial equality and the ability of the races to peacefully be together. It is a shame that it has developed a racist attitude as a result of SOMEONE at Shortridge.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree, we need to respect each others sexual orientation and keep the crude remarks out of the picture. But I do like knowing who is sleeping with who, it lets you know the true power of that picture. Shortridge is a joke, but don't ask the "Bobble-Heads" to look into the matter. The only answer is a major federal lawsuit that points out the racist of Cosby and how the "Bobble Heads" did nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with academic performance. All teachers and administrators should evaluated on their ability. This is why half the Central Office should be fired.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You are right and it is a cheap shot to use any "ism" to put someone else down. Back when Zendehas was superintendent and there were protests about going two years without a contract one school showed up with picket signs that showed her as a Mexican peasant, being kicked by a burro.

It doesn't matter to me what gender, orientation or race a person is, it does matter what they do. If the persons relationships are causing them to act a certain way then that may be an issue but it is not the fault of the entire group.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "I also agree that sexual orientation should not be considered for a job. However, the network has to be distroyed because they have ruined the system. Therefore, as for the "carpet muncher" comments, hit them where it hurts."

When you are teaching and a child calls another child a name do you use this attitude? Not me, I say "When Johnny calls you a fat frog, or any other nasty thing, it says so much more about him then it says about you. Since most of these people are apparently fairly open about their lifestyle, why would this hurt them? It does however make you look like someone who has a problem with gays, as opposed to someone who has a problem with vindictive, unprofessional, incompetent, dishonest, and unethical behavior.

And it is time for this type of behavior in IPS to STOP. Where is the board in this? Why are they allowing it to continue?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Last anonymous, you're exactly right.

"Hit them where it hurts" should be hitting them with honesty that leads to questions from the board, media, or colleagues about their competency and performance- NOT stooping to the level of making fun of a personal trait.

I can't believe someone would try to justify that kind of hateful and irrelevant remark.

If people are choosing friends who are not competent to get jobs over others, that is worthy of complaint. However, focusing in on sexual orientation is not the way to go about stating it or changing it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. To the poster who said, "keep the insults going...since we can't strike we will insult" - I really fail to see the logic in that. If you have legitimate and sustainable evidence about someone's competence, then address that in an appropriate way...the silly comments about hearsay and innuendos accomplish not a thing. Reminds me of the line from "Search for the Holy Grail" where the knight who had lost both arms and legs said, "Come back here...I will bite your knee caps"...
