What Else Is Out There?

IPS B.S. wants to know what other stories are out there that are not being told?

Let's get back to Shortridge. The world needs to know how horrible a man Cosby is. I use the term "man" but he isn't much of one if what was written is true about him.

Hahaha. You caved to the few that complained and wanted a new topic. If they don't want to hear about it, they don't have to read it.

I'm appalled at the enormous amounts of food being thrown away each day during summer school (and I'm sure during the regular year, too). Surely some shelter could use the remainders.

Most of the children at my summer school eat it all.

  5. AnonymousJune 22, 2010

What about the styrofoam trays that are used each day by each student and then thrown away? That seems like a lot of money being wasted and also hurting the environment. Aren't we all trying to "Go Green"?

Cosby has really brought shame to IPS. The girl sounds like she isn't the brightest lightbulb in the package, BUT Cosby is an administrator and should never have crossed the line.

Cosby came into Shortridge bragging how he broke his high school teacher's jaw. What kind of a person is proud of such violent behavior. I think he is a psychopath and this latest adventure only proves he is a little man out of control!

    @Cosby came into Shortridge bragging

He would brag about breaking his teacher's jaw? Did he brag to teachers or was his bragging done before students?

He must be a loose cannon! Private industry would cut their losses quickly by firing him. Yet, taxpayers' money is used to pay a handsome salary to this man so he can train children that it's OK to be disrespectful/violent to adults.

The only thing students learn from Cosby is 'how to keep on being ghetto'. He's holding the kids down, not lifting them up and expanding their horizons beyond the ghetto lifestyle.

His spin on that story was that the teacher deserved it. He actually believed what he was saying. Loose cannon? I think he's a NUT!

Cosby spins long tales at faculty meetings evoking tears but many are later proven to be false. Something is missing.

I don't know this Principal Cosby at Shortridge, but I have seen him in public before(he is as tall as he is wide)..............he really shouldn't tuck his shirts inside his trousers(not that his zipper is as long as Dr. White's, to go around that stomache). His body shape and the way he expresses himself, I thought the man had some sugar in his tank. I was surprise to hear he was involved with a woman and not a man? Just goes to figure IPS has the worst of the worst working for a corrupt school system!

    ReplyDelete
  15. AnonymousJune 23, 2010

Anyone who attended the Ben Carson lecture at Clowes last year witnessed Principal Cosby making a public spectacle of himself. His behavior was very inappropriate for such an occasion and demonstrated his arrogance.

It is amazing how IPS has picked some fakes to be role models for African-American males. Suggs and his infidelity. Dr
White and Dr. Giles have their ladies in the same building. Now Cosby and his crazy fling. Lets find some retired educators who are respected by the community.

    ReplyDelete
  17. AnonymousJune 23, 2010

Cosby came to IPS as part of the Gates Small School Grant, that even Bill and Melinda Gates admit was a bust. He was responsible for helping "retrain" teachers, were you "retrained", how effective was this? I was at a meeting where the retraining amounted to "white teachers can't understand the black experience, and shouldn't be teaching black kids", yup that was really useful.
    http://www.uindy.edu/news/?p=123
All this, an interesting observation from a man from the ghetto of New Castle!

    http://www.uindy.edu/news/?p=178

    http://www.harmonyschool.org/www/pdf/connections/2009.spring.liv_hist_cosby.pdf

The real tragedy that all of this is on the backs of the students who suffer from one more failed plan, one more failed administrator, one more fake initiative. Teachers want effective administrators, people who will see their role as supporting what happens in the classroom. They want to arrive at a building and find the things they need to teach in place. They want authoritative advice when they ask or need it.
They don't want an ego maniac in the office, someone who plays favorites, someone who doesn't back them up, or someone who makes millions of excused. If the teacher doesn't show up education stops, if an administrator doesn't show, who cares.

What a shame that all this drama takes away from our real purpose, educating children so they can have a better future.

    ReplyDelete
  18. AnonymousJune 23, 2010

Cosby isolated himself from his teachers this year. He didn't answer our emails. He was never available even when he was in the office alone. He was always going on out of town trips. I guess he made time to be available for this one female teacher. If the school board lets him stay, they should be fired!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. AnonymousJune 23, 2010

I'll say it again, good high quality African-American role models can't operate within the fences of IPS. Greg Allen, Will Tyler, and Jeff White were great school administrators. Their own ran them away because they were to head strong. Eugene White needs to get a grip and call some of the good ones to come home.

    1. Creativity is a sin in IPS--the powers that be have shut it down in every way they can. Even the Key School is gone, replaced by an IPS clone carrying only the name "Key."

Fantastic, creative out-of-the-box educators near retirement age are leaving in droves and the new teachers have few creative role models and no one acknowledges innovation unless it involves a photo-op.

I am proud of the work I did for IPS, proud of my student, my colleagues, proud of the heritage and beautiful buildings, even proud of a couple of my administrators, but I left when unstable, inept fear-driven administrators opted for educational practices they admitted were "of no use to students or their education" as opposed to proven and innovative methods that were working.

What we need to do is force IEA to do an Open Records request for documents pertaining to Brandon Cosby, Willie Giles, Eugene White, and Dexter Suggs. This will make them "lawyer up" which is always a sign of guilt.

Is there any word on a new contract? Our old one expired at the end of last school year.

I think people are forgetting the three years that we celebrated getting last summer was two years in the rear. So at the end of the 2009-10 school year we are back at the beginning.

No contract! There has been no mention from the union.

I think IPS needs to consider abandoning the Shortridge magnet. It is being run by a fool and district policies and rules are not followed and the concept of a law and government magnet have completely failed. Butler must be on the edge of severing ties. On top of all of that, it appears to be a sexual deli.

    ReplyDelete
  52. AnonymousJune 24, 2010

You took my question correctly! Based on the policies and management of the schools. That is what it was exactly.

Hopefully the new one will give us good working conditions or more money for putting up with this school board and administration.

Wish the union would comment on what is going on. Will we enter the year without a contract or have something by the end of the summer.

Greg Allen, Will Tyler, and Jeff White were great school administrators.
LMAO! Great administrators? White didn't know how to order textbooks for his kids, for cryin' out loud, so they went without for weeks at the start of his last school year. Allen smiled a lot while chaos rained. Actually, that could be said of smooth-talkin' Jeff "Nothing's my fault, I'm a victim" White, too. If he was so great, why can't he land a job in a new district? Lord knows he's tried. Because other districts know a fake when they see him.

@Greg Allen, Will Tyler, and Jeff White were great school administrators.

The person who did not order textbooks at Marshall for that particular year was Debra Barlowe. She was the Asst. Principal who was in charge of textbooks. Cosby is by training and education an 'actor'. His undergrad degree is in Speech Communication and Theatre. This training is evident in his penchant for high drama, getting into character for a role, and enjoyment of the spotlight.

Unfortunately, this theatrical training has NOT prepared him for leadership and management. A few courses in school administration do not make a man a 'leader' or a 'manager' of people. Either you're a leader/manager or you're not. Cosby is NOT a leader, and he surely does NOT possess the skills to manage a school.

A competent leader or smart manager would never find himself in such a sordid tawdry situation.

So, as the blog topic asked, WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE??????

Elementary summer school is over. Yippee!

Had an interesting conversation with a sixth grader today (going on to 7th).

He's tickled as heck to spend this summer holding a bright orange pizza sign. He laughed, because, while he's making six bucks an hour to hold the sign, the local drug dealer is paying him two hundred bucks a day to "Snitch on the PoPo" (his words). He has a cell phone with only one button, which he showed the class. While I had never seen that technology, I wasn't shocked or surprised, except that he was so open with this information.

He bragged that he will be ready to quit school and get his own "turf" when he gets out of eighth grade. He said he'd be too rich to have to get any more education.

So, at least one IPS student has his future planned down to the month and year.

    I agree.

No newsletters. No information on when meetings are occuring. The website is NOT user friendly to find out information. Our own AR's in the building have no clue saying, "nothing has been put out".

Before you start bashing people for question find out the facts.

I called up there three times near the end of school.

    1. Was put on hold and lost once,

    2. the second time was told to call back when someone (don't remember the name will have to check my notes when I get back to school) was in the office,

    3. the third time I was transfered around and finally told that there is not information at this time. (Guess, they were waiting for Dr. White to let them know what they could say.)

There is no transparency on the negotiation or communication with the members. So, yes I was asking. What is going on?

(Sorry about any typo's and or gram errors. Doing this from my cell phone and the screan is broken to see them.)

Well lets see: the web site is run by your fellow teachers on their free time. The committee is just starting to meet this summer and the date and time is posted on the web site. Sounds like your AR needs help from you! Get up out of your easy chair and attend the monthly meetings on Monday night, then you would be able to communicate this same information to your fellow teachers, and not putting down the Union. The Union is the membership, not one person on Shadeland Avenue, if you are so concerned then join the committee, or just sit in on the meetings. Now lets see your excuses, I can just hear them, family, school, church, children, we all have that an more.

Only 25% of the teachers at my school are union members. It was not shocking to me when I saw the list of member names. I could have guessed who was a union member just by their behaviors -- they were the ones who were first out the door at the end of the day, the first to complain if a faculty meeting lasted too long by their standards, the first to walk out of an important meeting if the meeting lasted too long, the first to scan the building Duty Roster to see if they had more duties than the teacher down the hall, and the first to compare the number of their daily preps with all the other teachers' preps.

The IEA president is paid with members' dues money. We do not pay her to kiss Eugene fat ass. There is also a Uniserve Director paid with members dues......Most members don't even know his/her name. Members used to get Action Line updates but that doesn't happen anymore. When was the last Action Line printed and distributed? I guess when Eugene speaks that we are to assume he is speaking for IEA. He does own the President, Ann Wilkins. After almost 30 years as a member, I am strongly considering dropping my membership since Eugene is now running the union.

Sarah Bogard not only is the laziest but the meanest and the dumbest. She knows nothing and cares nothing about school discipline, test scores, classroom instruction or teaching techniques. All she cares about are her damn flowers and bushes. The amount of money spent on that is insane. Tech needs new desks, filing cabinets and other needs before making the place look like a greenhouse gone wild.

I understand that Tech will be building a new greenhouse. Since Mrs. Bogard is now the district vocational director as well as the principal, she will be starting a horticulture program!!!

We lose validity, as a group of truly educated, informed IPS employees, when we do nothing but bash administrators. I agree with all of the postings above about the ridiculous behavior of those that are supposed to be "in charge" of various IPS campuses. But, rather than name call, curse, and call out the quircky actions of IPS administrators, let's talk about the challenges that our kids face as a result of poor IPS policies and procedures. Let's talk about who is doing what is "right." Let's talk about what we can actually do to effect change.

It would seem that no matter how hard professional educators try to participate in this blog in a dignified manner, there will be some who just cannot understand the error of their ways. Sure, we could stop visiting this blog, but if we do not say something intelligent in the midst of all of this, then what is the point? To the majority -- I am honored to be called an educator in a really tough environment and working along side some of the finest people I know....So there!

The Sarah Bogard I knew was one of the hardest working people in IPS, if I stopped in the building on Saturday or Sunday she was there, working. And when she did school business, hiring, the buildings and grounds committee she followed the IPS guidelines, she never did anything dirty or underhanded. Tech is too big of a school for the principal to micro-manage classrooms....she has to rely on her subordinates to be here eyes and ears in the classrooms, and as you well know those aren't her decisions..

This blog is full of teacher's who are losers and no different from the kids and adults that THEY talk about. This blog also has a few, professional, concerned teachers that are actually looking for information that may be true, that may assist them in their employment, or that may contain positive praise. I would fall into that category. It was nice in the beginning, but this blog does not set a good public example. If you are that unhappy: quit. Be miserable off another district's expense...but wait...they won't hire you because you probably don't do your job anyway (complainers and check drawers). All of the decent people who check in from time to time need to boycott this site and never return. My visits turned from weekly to monthly to bi-monthly and after the period on this sentence- I am not returning. Low life teachers! Again, I am talking to the negative, hateful, spiteful, unprofessional people on here.

The story about the drug dealer paying the kid to watch for snitches is a lie. Street drug dealers don't make as much as you think they do, and the ones that do make big money would never pay a kid to watch for cops on the street corner with a phone that has the dealer's phone number in it. Also, your contempt for the phrase "po-po" is more evidence that this story is made up based on your stereotypes of what IPS students are like. (I'm not saying students don't say it, I'm saying that it's common urban slang, and has nothing to do with valuing education. Just like I have rural friends, both dumb and smart, both educated and not, who use words like "ain't" "hisself" and "tarnation." The social worker is a liar too. I AM a teacher, and students turn to the streets because that is where they get the most respect. Most urban families are not respected within the education system, as this blog clearly demonstrates. And NOBODY respects people who look down on them. To expect these kids to look at bigoted, ignorant, sour-faced teachers as beacons of light to be blindly followed is stupid. And it is this stupidity (among teachers and administrators) that is destroying IPS. This blog is evidence of that stupidity. I will continue to come here and denounce the stupidity and the ignorance, and I hope the poster above does too. If you want to hold your bash sessions in private, than do so. If you want to do it on a blog, people like me (a real IPS teacher) are going to continue to call you out.

You are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. This was a direct quote, coming during the last hour of the last discussion of the last day of grade six summer school curriculum, National Geographic's "Asking Questions." We were reading narratives of Jane Addams and Jacob Riis, and their fight to eliminate child labor in the early 1900s. My students were aghast to learn that, at a Christmas celebration, Jane Addams offered poor children baskets of candy. Each child refused to accept even one sweet, since they worked in the candy factories that produced the treats.

This led to a discussion about what jobs 12- and 13-year olds could legally hold today. The first two chores mentioned were cutting grass and babysitting. That's when W..... made his statement. None of the other students even blinked an eye, simply nodding at W.....'s good fortune. Now, W..... is a polite, well mannered, unassuming young man with the best assortment of the most expensive shoes I've ever seen. The only time I saw panic was Tuesday morning, when we offloaded the buses in the drowning, drenching rain. He took great strides (literally!) to keep his footwear dry.

Besides, where have you been? Kids have been used as lookouts for criminal activity throughout time! We had students from Clearstream Gardens (AKA Zooneyville) at School 114 who regularly wore in socks stuffed with wads of cash 25 years ago. Drug and gang activity was so prevalent that police escorts were required for the mail to be delivered. The saddest was when the mother of three students set her apartment ablaze, then took her own life. The fire department was ordered to wait on Raymond Street for their escort before they could begin dousing the flames.

Those projects are long gone, but I still cringe at the thought of what the future held for these kids. Some things don't change.

Oh, yes, not only am I an IPS Educator, I am an IPS Tech Titan! And, yes, I am a bigot....against sour-faced, negative posters like you. I'm sorry for your students, if you bring this attitude into your class.

I pray that I don't teach with you. Seems that you have more stereotypes than anyone.

I'm not the poster who originally disputed your story, but I will admit that your second version sounds way more believable than your first. Most Indiana drug dealers don't make $200 per day themselves, let alone so much that they can pay a 6th grader that much. But the biggest thing that always makes me question the truthfulness of these kinds of stories is that if this story were true, all of the players, including the teacher, would be identifiable from the story. Other teachers would know who the poster was from the story. And why post anonymously on a blog and then tell a story that anyone at your school would be able to identify you with?

People, this blog is EXTREME. Many of us teach in small quiet elementary schools where the kids walk to school and the community is very supportive. Teachers aren't "fooling around" with others and many have been teaching together for almost 20 years. Kids return to our school to share their accomplishments many years later.Things are peaceful and learning is the focus. I hate to see this other crap dominate a forum where the focus should be about improving things and not personal vendettas. Too bad the rest of you aren't as happy and satisfied as the rest of us. To those of you outside IPS..don't let this blog influence you into believing that ALL IPS is this way or feels this way. It's not! This isn't happening in all of OUR schools! Peace.

To the students I teach being a drug dealer doesn't sound like a bad job, often the dealer is an uncle or brother who shows up when money is scarce and brings a bag of groceries, diapers, or those hot new shoes that make you someone. When I was doing homebound the girl's brother would be asleep on the sofa, and drugs and money would fall out of his socks, he also bought everything the baby needed.

To combat this perception I used to do a "T" chart, comparing my job to that of being a drug dealer, we'd call that a teachable moment. Con's on being a drug dealer, no vacation, no health insurance, you put your entire family at risk, you can't bank your money, you can't buy a house, you risk going to jail every day.

    ReplyDelete
  113. AnonymousJune 26, 2010

How was the teacher punished? If you say that she was transferred to a better school, how is that being punished. The principal is being punished by having to stay put and dealing the the disgraces of having been with that teacher. How embarrassing!

    ReplyDelete
  114. AnonymousJune 26, 2010

How do you define "better school". I question whether she was transferred to a better school. That is her preference not yours and not mine. She was yanked out of a school that she was dedicated to and worked hard for and accomplished a lot with her students. Transfer the principal to a different school. Although with his limited experience and anger problems that would probably just create a problem with another school.

I honestly cannot believe people continue to defend her. She is equally as wrong as he was. She was not happily married to her husband if she felt the need to cheat on him. From what was being said here, her marriage was over before she even started the affair with Cosby. She made it public knowledge with her displeasure that he opted not to stay with her, so she brought this on herself. There really is no basis for you to defend her and it only adds humor to this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  145. AnonymousJune 28, 2010

No, I never received a Human Resource Handbook. I always received a HR book from other school districts. This book would distinctly spell out all the "do not's". My conclusion is that IPS does not like to put anything in writing because that makes it too official and perhaps legal. IPS prefers to do business by 'word of mouth', hearsay, etc, which is nothing more than allowing IPS to keep all their options open when dealing with HR situations. That does not work with such a large group of employees. Just as students need guidelines laid out in simple language, so do adult employees.

IPS has policies, lots of policies, go to the home page, then go to the board page, then go to the public site on board documents and there is a row of tabs across the top, try the one that says policies, and there is a drop down menu of various policies. IPS does a really poor job of letting people know about policies, when they changed the cell phone policy about a year and a half ago no one knew except one teacher, and he informed the principal, and had to print off the new policy for everyone.
