Rejection!!!

Did any of you hear the Administration submitted its plan for school improvement to the State and the State told them it sucked. Get ready for the takeover.

  1. If you listen to the people on this blog armageddon is coming for educators and we should all be prepared to wear monitors and work for free, I'm not all that surprised.

  2. Sheesh, Gene White has had 6 years to create improvement plans for his failing schools. Now he's acting like this proposed state takeover is breaking news to him. I have no sympathy for him or the School Board. He's only attempting to protect his turf (aka his job) at present.

  3. Since 2005, Dr. White and his administrative team have tried everything humanly possible to improve the scores of the students in IPS. Every one of us has had to institute new initiatives and have have bent over backwards to change ourselves in order to reach our students. Each new year has brought more and more changes to teachers and administrators alike. The one variable that has not had to be accountable: PARENTS. Until you change the attitude of the parents, we can stand on our heads until we're blue in the face and nothing is going to change. Strange how Daniels, Obama, Bennett, etc. never mention how we're going to change the home lives of these students. Next step: boarding schools for all students! Let's take all the students away from their parents and for long periods of time so that the attitudes of their parents will have less effect.

  4. Directly above -- good post. I agree with your thoughts.

  5. When you have arrogant leaders like Eugene White and his sycophants like Mary Bush who wouldn't know good teaching if it hid in her giant hair, nothing is going to improve. Surprise....nothing has....and nothing will until Eugene White and the other losers on the school board and in the Ed. Center are gone. Clean the stench out of the Ed. Center and you might be amazed at how things improve.

  6. "tried everything humanly possible" LOL, except for possibly some well thought out plans that have a snowball's chance in global warming to work. Add to well thought out, fully funded and implemented by smart engaging people who treat teachers with respect and roll their sleeves up and work along with them. Let's think back to the famous Over Under debacle. Well thought out? No. Fully funded? Debatable. Implemented by Prudence and the Jane Gang. Nuff said.

  7. Again, those plans would have had a chance to work if the parents in this district would help out a bit. I don't care how well thought out a plan is; without parent support it will not be successful. Why do similar plans for schools such as Carmel work? The parents are there to support the kids. So you can blame the administration at IPS from now to forever, it's not going to change the backgrounds of the students we serve. Kids who come to school unprepared are the problem. Put Dr. White, Joan Harrell, Li-yen Johnson etc. at a district with parental support and you would be seeing them in a different light.

Change the attitudes of the students and the district would surge.

  8. And what has White done to encourage parents, would it be those meetings he holds to get parent input on decisions he has already made? Would it be when his peons dismantle SBDM's, the only place where parent input actual counts? Would it be the responsive administrations at building levels that don't even return parent phone calls, and where you can't even set up an appointment to see an administrator? The same way White bullies teachers he bullies administrators and parents...the parents simply don't have to take it and are voting with their feet by taking their kids out of IPS and into charters and township schools.

  9. The reason Carmel is better than IPS is because parents tend to be formally educated and therefore they are able to teach their children that school has direct value to these kids lives. That's not possible in families where nobody has formal education, even the people who make good money. So then it falls to individual teachers to teach the relevance of their content, and few IPS teachers do this. Add to that that parents in Carmel won't tolerate low-performance in schools. Parents in IPS are less sophisticated. They are unaware that high school classes are being taught at a middle school level and wouldn't know how to successfully change that even if they did know. Parents in Carmel also would never ever put up with the hostility in IPS schools. Children are treated like prisoners and then we act all surprised when kids are prepared for nothing but prison. Third, Carmel Schools wouldn't hire a teacher who didn't think it was possible for a teacher to teach difficult kids. IPS hires the teachers nobody else will.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That's exactly right (above post). However, teachers trying to teach the relevance of the content to kids who have been engrained (by their families) to disrespect authority and education is daunting. For every child a teacher might reach, there are dozens more who go with their existing cultural norms. If Dr. White is a bully, it's because of the frustrating situation the district is in. Why wasn't he a bully in Washington Township? Because there were enough parents in that district who supported education that he didn't have to resort to desperate measures.

No IPS teacher goes into the profession with the attitude that it's impossible to teach the students. The students themselves help teachers to reach this unfortunate conclusion. After a few dozen times of being cussed out and breaking up fights, anyone would be discouraged. Even the best teachers in IPS have faced these daunting situations.

By the way, the most successful schools in IPS are the magnet schools; schools that have supportive parents!

    ReplyDelete
  11. My kids are in a magnet school, and while I agree the parents are more involved, the teachers are also way different. So it's kind of a chicken or the egg thing. Are the parents more supportive because the teachers are more respectful and engaging or are the teachers more respectful and engaging because parents are more supportive?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah, I don't buy the idea that it's impossible to teach kids that things have value unless their parents also think it has value. Think of the things most kids (urban or rural, rich or poor) value and most of it is not taught by parents, and much of it is directly taught against by parents. Outside forces have convinced these kids that certain things have value, whether it's silly bandz or music or fashion. Traditional progressive teachers will probably hate this analogy, but we need to SELL education to these kids. If Nike can get poor kids to spend money on shoes, why can't we get poor kids to value education for free? Because Nike is doing a better job of teaching these kids right now than we are. I swear to God I think the best thing teacher education programs could do to improve teacher quality is require a marketing class or two!

  13. Eugene White was a bully in Washington Township also. The difference is that the school board refused to be his puppets like Mary Busch and Elizabeth Gore are. There were even allegations in the Star that he forged school board members signatures on contracts that they knew nothing about. If he had not left for IPS, speculation is that there would have been an inquiry into his actions.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I read the IBJ article above. Rather than firing teachers, I suspect Eugene White should concentrate on ensuring that his building level principals are indeed the 'instructional leaders' of their buildings.

If a school continues to be dysfunctional and failing, then the 'instructional leader' should be released. The IBJ should interview White with an eye for a new story: "How Hard Is It To Fire A Principal".

I cannot remember IPS firing a principal. Can you?

    ReplyDelete
  16. "I cannot remember IPS firing a principal. Can you?"

All I ever remember is seeing principals from failing schools get shuffled around or better yet, get promoted to a cush ed-center job teaching other principals how to fail.

  18. One has to have some awareness of what one DOESN'T know. One HAS to want more than the status quo....but one has to KNOW what the status quo even is. One has to have some comprehension of possibilities. One has to have encouragement, resilience, and motivation. One has to be well fed, comforted, and reasonably secure. Are these "ones" our kids???

  19. So Dr. White is closing Schools 107 and 109 this week. 109 made AYP and is one of only 13 schools Dr. Bennett rated Exemplary. The teachers at 109 were told they would have to re-apply and interview for their jobs EVEN though their school made AYP!!!Congrats on the job you did now you are out of a job.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why is Dr. White closing 107 and 109? This is the first time I have heard this?

    ReplyDelete
  21. They cannot afford to renovate both so they will be consolidated together at School 108. 107 got the news today...109 will get theirs tomorrow. The sick thing is that, no offense to 107 teachers, but both schools' teachers were told they had to re-apply for their jobs even though 109 made AYP and was rated Exemplary through PL 221!! Amazing

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is rumored that special education director Robb Warriner will retire soon. Who will be the next director? Some of the top candidates are listed below:
    Carl
    Mary
    Jill
    Paula
    Marsha
    Deb D.

    ReplyDelete
  23. None of the above are qualified............neither is Robb! The Special Ed. Dept. at IPS has gone down hill for the last couple of years! Their backwards philosophy on inclusion............is ass backwards! Don't they get it..........inclusion doesn't work for all special ed. students!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just goes to show all teachers are expendable at IPS.............if 109 made AYP and they are still forcing them to reapply for their jobs? Where the hell is that damn good for nothing IEA president Ann Wilkins?( she is a female version of Dr. White) Is she in hiding? Have there been any sightings of her at any schools? I heard she is good friends with the Principal at #48...............isn't that a conflict of interest?

    ReplyDelete
  25. It is interesting to me how people love to criticize others without offering to help fix the problem themselves. People love to criticize us teachers, but would never dream of trying to take on our jobs for the small amount of money that we get paid. I agree that Dr. White has his issues, but who would take his job? Who would do a better job? The people I know who could do a better job would never do it for the small amount of money that he makes compared with the grief that he has to put up with. Ask yourself, "Would I take his job?". Most people would answer that question with a resounding NO!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dr. White makes more than the president of the United States....Let's get real. He has not earned his salary and has made IPS a worse system since he took over.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Just goes to show all teachers are expendable at IPS.............if 109 made AYP and they are still forcing them to reapply for their jobs? Where the hell is that damn good for nothing IEA president Ann Wilkins?"

Good point..maybe teachers who belong to the union are protected?? That sounds almost untrue to penalize teachers who made AYP but whose school closed because of no fault of their own.

  28. Gambold is the only IPS secondary school not on probation. The entire staff at Gambold is displaced. HR is coming to speak to the staff tomorrow. Tell me that is good for the students.

Do they interview for THEIR jobs too?? Or will they keep their positions at Northwest?

  30. The Gambold staff interviews.

  31. Re: SpEd Directorship

Paula Smith is sweet lady, but she couldn't manage herself out of a paper bag. She's afraid of her own shadow, would never make waves, and is just marking time in IPS until she can retire with full benefits and become a free agent consultant rehired by IPS through Title 1 Funds.

Marsha King talks a good show, but she's where she is in SpEd as a Supervisor only as a result of the 'Dance of the Lemons' with building level administrators a few years ago. She was 'waltzed/jitter bugged/swing danced' out of her high school building level administrative position into the Ed Center where she could do less harm.

Advertise the position nationally. IPS needs new ideas from new people outside the immediate area.

  32. Dr. White makes a salary around 250,000. The President makes 400,000. You are incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You are only reporting his base salary. With his bonuses earned on the backs of his teachers, he would exceed the president's salary. I bet Obama doesn't get a $5000 dollar a year clothing allowance.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "I agree that Dr. White has his issues, but who would take his job?"
    ************************
Hey, I'm unemployed. I'll take it! I'd go from living like a pauper to living like a king.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @I bet Obama doesn't get a $5000 dollar a year clothing allowance.
    ______________________________________________

And, I wager that if Obama received a $5000 annual clothing allowance he'd not spend it on ill-fitting, gawdy zoot suits with matching patent leather slippers. Don't even mention White and Obama in the same sentence. It's blasphemy!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ok, the President also has a private plan, house, office building, and vacation home. Still looks like the Prez wins that one. Don't be an idiot. Criticize Dr. White for his policies, but don't try to create a false argument from baseless information. You make us all look ignorant.

  37. How can the IEA President be good friends with certain principals? This sounds like a conspiracy to me..........looks like the principals and Wilkins are working together to get rid of teachers who have seniority and are at the top of the pay scale, so they can hire the young teachers for less salary. IEA does not protect you from their own.....ANN WILKINS!!!! She is DANGEROUS!!!

  38. Are you capable of having a rational discussion? It's almost comical the way you make everything into some dramatic rumor. You might think about checking out other discussion forums so you can compare and contrast and see just how unstable you come across.

    ReplyDelete
  39. With all the budget cuts you would think the first thing to go would be a clothing allowance and a car allowance for the Intendent. I mean isn't he the one who said CHILDREN COME FIRST?
Seems to me it's more like "my shiny suits" come first.

  40. Blame White all you want. He probably deserves it. However, you could put Jesus Christ himself in the position of IPS superintendent and unless he decided to take away the free will of all staff and students, IPS would still fail. Any school system is a direct reflection of the parents and students it serves. The majority of parents and students in IPS do not create a pretty reflection. Public education as a whole has been on a slow, agonizing decline for decades. Its only a matter of time before total collapse.

  41. IEA President Ann Wilkins is not dangerous...she is just plain STUPID and owned 100% by Eugene White.......

    ReplyDelete
  42. When can we vote her out?

    ReplyDelete
  43. When White is out, Ann Wilkins will be at the mercy of the state or others that come to lead IPS. With her years of experience, she will need to worry about her job. Karma is going to take care of Ann.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Back to principals and job performance. Bad principals are promoted and moved to positions at the ed center. Such positions are for school improvement leadership. How can a failing principal meet such a job requirement? For example Botts came from 107, an out of control school and now she is a director telling principals how to improve their schools. I guess the principal from school 60 will soon be a director too.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Don't forget about Greenwood. She spent years at Arlington showing everyone just how bad an IPS high school could be. Now she's living it up in a cush office making an obscene amount of money for doing nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Is #60 still out of control? I heard a teacher is constantly texting and talking on her cell phone while she is suppose to be teaching. Can't imagine why any grown person has to be texting during working time. Is this the norm for teachers today...talking and texting?

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Don't forget about Greenwood.

Greenwood must be nearing 70 years old by now. What are her plans for stepping aside for someone with fresh, new ideas brought in from outside IPS?

Another question -- do administrators have any type association or union that provides job protection to them? What guideline is available for 'firing an imcompetent administrator'?

    ReplyDelete
  48. When Botts was at #107, she'd frequently call a staff meeting on Fridays, and she'd proceed to yell, scream, rant & rave. Totally unprofessional.

    ReplyDelete
  49. There was a first grade teacher at #107 who planned on teaching for one more year, then retire. She'd submitted her paper work & everything. Botts moved her from first grade to sixth grade to purposely make her life a living hell. The power trip of a cold hearted bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes, yes, yes, school #60 is still out of control. And yes, there's a teacher there who's constantly texting, often during class time. AND, not only that, but teachers text the principal during school time. What in the bloody hell could be so important??

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hmmm...let's analyze something. Botts, formerly principal at #107, and Ms. "I am respectful, I am responsible", currently at #60, are both former music teachers. Both buildings were/are out of control, both women are known to become too emotional. Makes one wonder if they should've stayed in music. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yes, Ann Wilkins is one of Dr. White's puppets but lest ye forget - she was voted in. We told you not to vote for her - but you didn't listen. Now you got what you voted for. Don't blame Ann, blame the person who voted for her. School 60 is closing. Richards is gone. Botts is Li Yen's so she stays.
