Congratulations to the IPS Teacher of the Year from Howe. I do not know him, but he deserves our congratulations along with each building Teacher of the Year. We have so much to be proud of among those who serve our children.
Just have a great relaxing summer and be prepared to be the best you can upon return. Our kids deserve us at our best. We are the best in the state no matter what our State Superintendand and our own Superintendant says.
God, bless all of you and see you in August. Have a safe and happy time with your families. We get so little of that during the year between all our class and school functions. Your families deserve your undivided attention over the next few months.
I'll spend several of the next days at school sorting, discarding, and planning for next year.
There's never time during the year, and I'm just crazy enough to take a few days now to be relaxed next semester. My teammate says I'm an overachiever, but I just like to stay ahead of the game, if at all possible.
Bless every single person who makes my job easier.....custodians, secretaries, cafeteria ladies, social workers, parents (well, SOME parents), parent liaisons and volunteers, ESL assistants, administration (yes, my administrator serves as a shield and an umbrella), and fellow educators (ok, SOME fellow educators).
IPS Teacher Arrested In Assault Of 22-Year-Old Daughter
POSTED: 4:42 pm EDT May 25, 2010 UPDATED: 5:50 pm EDT May 25, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS -- A veteran special education teacher is facing charges she beat her developmentally disabled daughter.
Kimberly Tetrick, 45, was arrested Sunday night at the Farmington Lakes Assisted Living Center, where her 22-year-old daughter lives, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.
Police said Tetrick became angry after learning that her daughter had struck up a romance with another resident.
"She grabbed her by the hair, throwing her head first into a mailbox," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "Then when she fell, she started kicking her."
An Indianapolis Public Schools spokeswoman said Tetrick, who teaches special education at Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High, had not notified the district of her arrest.
School policy only requires teachers to notify administrators of a criminal conviction.
Tetrick has been a teacher with the district for 11 years. Copyright 2010 by TheIndyChannel.com All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
The IPS Teacher of the Year did not come from the Teach for America program; he went through the Transition to Teaching master's of education program at Marian University.
The 'NOT' teacher of the year, Kimberly Tetrick, (see above post) earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from Indiana State University. Fat lot of good that did her.
Point being, it does not matter where you earned your degree. It matters what you do with your degree after it's earned.
It matters not one iota whether the IPS Teacher of the Year arrived in a classroom from IU, Harvard, Indiana Wesleyan, Princeton, Teach for America, Yale, Transition to Teaching, or the University of Belize.
While I feel that there is a lot of complaining on here, it's an outlet for frustrations. There are some things that aren't justified and some things that are. This blog isn't ruining the rep of IPS teachers, IPS teachers are ruining their own rep (those that do not do their jobs). If you do what you need to do, I'm sure the material does't pertain to you. If you don't want to read the blog, don't. No need to disable it.
I just got a message from a former student. She thanked me for being one of the kind teachers and for starting her love of books. That kind of thing is why we keep going back year after year. You never know who you are going to make an impression on.
I'm not talking about IPS teachers staining their rep... Do you see other districts with a trashy blog? Vent your frustrations through exercise, healthy eating, or whatever else is constructive. If you were dealing with rational people then the blog could be a positive, professional outlet for change but let's be honest...we all know it isn't. Do I see helpful teaching strategies, shared lessons, positive advice or success stories (if you say yes, its lest than .5%). This blog is a nail in the coffin to an already wiped out district. If someone were deciding to close schools and takeout the public school system, this blog is evidence of why they should. Look at the attitudes and perceptions of IPS teachers. I am NOT talking to educators who do their jobs and are content. I am talking to the nasty, unprofessional and whining, complaining blog posters who dominate this site. isable this blog!
I doubt it will be disabled because of one person's desire. Also Perry Township had a similar site for about three years. It was finally taken down (not renewed) because people lost interest. If youu dislike this site, simply stop logging in (daily, I should add) and stop bashing it. If it is so bad, it will die all by itself.
Eugene is evidence that IPS needs to be dissolved. He has bankrupted it, destroyed morale and ruined an already shaky reputation. Many think that he was hired by the powers to be to destroy the system. If that is the case then he has done his job well.
Deactur Township also has a blog. I love my job. Most days I find it hard to believe I actually get paid to do it. I took one of my former students (along with my boys) fishing this morning. Little fella caught better fish than I did. Oh well.
I feel the same way! I LOVE what I do for a living. It is my calling and I feel so very fortunate. In this economy, BE THANKFUL for the job you have. I do not seem to have the issues so many others do with IPS. Maybe that's because I worked in the corporate world for many years before becoming a teacher. Maybe it is because I smile and say, "Thank You" more often than, "I deserve". I appreciate the way IPS and other districts are. This IS WHAT IT IS! I accept it and signed up for this. I did not come in knowing all of this and then started to bitch about it.
I hate to be the one to say it, but the world of teaching is NIRVANA/HEAVEN/BLISS compared to the cut-throat world of corporations. It really is. I do not think most teachers realize how good they have it. I don't! It is intrinsically rewarding, the hours are great and the work is not particularly difficult. We all (many of us) work hard but it is not rocket science.
I could not agree more with the second to last poster who said she loves teaching! I love it, too, and most of the time I am still pinching myself after 15 years to believe that I have such a great way to earn a living. Those who want to bitch and gripe about the kids, their colleagues, our Superintendent, and their school administrators either need to grow the balls to have a frank conversation with their supervisor regarding their unhappiness or get out of teaching altogether. Your negative attitudes aren't good for our kids.
If you are so unhappy with IPS, LEAVE! You are the ones we hate to work with and the individuals who mistreat the children. The same things you are saying about Dr. White is probably the words you use to describe your students. LEAVE!
I love working with our students...all of them even the ones who present severe challenges....but I hate Eugene White and the way he treats his employees and his total disregard for the students and parents...I have too many years to leave but I have been here through many superintendents and he is clearly the very worst abusive ignorant one we have ever had.................
I'm going to a couple of workshops and revamping some of my unit plans for next year. I'll also lose myself in my garden and take my kids on some day trips.
I can't believe teachers really get on here to b@$^$ the way they do...how professional. If you do not like teaching for IPS then quit and leave. It is teachers like you that make it harder for those of us who actually care about or job and students. I hope everyone has a great summer and gets plenty of rest. See you in August.

Teach for America is a fraud foisted on the American public.
ReplyDeleteDisable this blog please! It is ruining the already stained rep of IPS teachers who actually teach and DO something!
ReplyDeleteExcept for the first five contributors.
ReplyDeleteLet's be positive. We've earned it!

ReplyDeleteEugene White and clueless Mary Busch have done more to tarnish the reputation of IPS that all teachers combined.
