What was that post all about?
And, to what teachers are you referring to "be out of a job"? We have one more full year for stimulus money that funds Cadre teachers.
    Stop causing wide-spread panic.

    Indy Star Article - 5/13/10

Upon being assigned precinct judge duties at Indianapolis Public School 46 on the Southwestside, I was annoyed. This involved two things I'm generally not fond of: venturing out of Downtown Indianapolis and children. I had no idea my minor annoyance would quickly turn to anger, sadness and a call to action.

The voting machines were set up in the gymnasium adjacent to the cafeteria, with double doors opening to a frequently used hallway. As the children arrived in the morning, they filed past my work area on their way to breakfast. Backpacks in hand, they were greeted by a woman who stood watch over them and criticized them relentlessly for their appearance and behavior. Smiles turned to frowns and skips turned to mopes.

At this point, a member of the school staff engaged me in conversation. The kids were "horrible" this year, she said. She was just trying to get through the next three weeks until she didn't have to deal with these "bad" kids anymore. "All of them?" I wondered.

When lunch rolled around, no one within blocks could have missed the loud woman on the microphone berating the entire lunchroom of kids for being too loud.

"Guess what?" she screamed. "You all don't get no recess."

Yes, she screamed at these elementary students, over a microphone, and used improper grammar while doing so. It was one of the most beautiful days of the year, but those children spent the next 15 minutes with their heads down in a cafeteria with the lights off and were screamed at again for being too rambunctious when marching back to their classrooms.

Many similar incidents occurred throughout the day, and every single staff member who struck up a conversation with me made a point to mention just how awful the children were. I didn't see their point.

Of course, I'm no expert and it may be unfair of me to judge, but what I saw was a group of impatient, disrespectful, rude adults who were treating first-graders like the enemy. I wanted to force all of them to sit in a dark room with their heads down for a while.

I debated what to do. I considered meeting with the principal or the superintendent to tell them the errors of their ways. I drafted a harshly written letter to the IPS School Board members. But instead, after reading more of The Star's ongoing education coverage, I turned in an application to volunteer for the Starfish Initiative, which provides one-on-one mentoring to put economically challenged students.

I'm going to try to be part of the solution. I am part of the village, and that village does stretch farther south than South Street, and, yes, kids live there too.

To all who read this White said comments that came right out of his mouth last night that people would not believe. He said it to the people that were in attendance at a meeting about the kids who got kick out of school at AHS. He used th N word and talked about the KKK. Yes his words all most caused the poeple in crowd to loose control.

If the person that control's this blog and has any ball's they will post that words that White said that was deleted from comment 24.

Yes White did say that at the EC.

If he said these things and they caused that kind of reaction, why are you the only one reporting it?

I was their and the parents and the kids were at the meeting at the EC that started at 7:30 pm. This is all I can say at this time.

Doctor White has frequently used the N word. When he first came to the district, he was overheard at a principals' meeting saying he was the "Head N" in charge. You could have heard a pin drop in that room.

  10. AnonymousMay 13, 2010

Please tell me that he did not say that.

Don't be gullible. Just because someone posts it here doesn't mean it's true. I'd be surprised that a superintendent wouldn't lose his job if he talked like that in meetings.

Eugene White is a House Negro that has been given a room in the basement of Master's house and has been given permission to keep the field negroes silent. This man has sold his soul for a white suit, gold watch, and a Chinese women.

He DID say it. Believe it if you want, but he did. He had just come to the district, and everyone was either still too impressed at that time, or too afraid. Everyone looked at each other and no one said a WORD! October, 2005.

Eugene White is a joke he's all about lining his pockets, and could care less for the students or the people who work for him. Oh and all the leadership at IPS and mostly Mary Bush is all on a power trip good luck saving a shitty situation.

I have never heard Dr. White use the word, and I wasn't at the meting in question, but last year a meeting of Indianapolis area youth football league presidents and coaches was organized by IPS District Football Coordinator Emil Ekiyor a meeting made up of approximately 30 to 35 local residents, the Tech football head coach and staff and other IPS athletic and administration staff held at Arsenal Tech. Of those in attendance 3 were Caucasian, 1 was an IPS Athletic Director, 1 was a local pastor and the other a local business man who volunteered at an IPS school. During the meeting Victor Bush as Arsenal Tech's Athletic Director was given the floor and presented an passionate diatribe on the subject of inner-city athletes being poached by township schools to win them championships and then returned to the inner-city ill-prepared to cope or meet the challenges of their future life. The presentation itself was quite good, and actually I think most people involved in IPS athletics would if not agree at least understand the position, the issue is at the end of the speech he said and I quote "... well I am here to tell the white folk, the thank a n***** program is over" and I leave the grammar exact, insert the n-word (which I find so distasteful I cant even type it out) where the astericks are.

After both his supervisor at Arsenal Tech and Jane Kendrick being made aware of this the superintendents office not only didn't fire or even punish Victor Bush... he was promoted. This was verified by multiple people including an African-American IMPD detective. It was just ignored... so to say that Dr. White would be fired for saying the n-word in a meeting is a bit presumptuous... but what is a fact that if a Caucasian IPS employee would have said the exact same thing he would have been fired the next day, period.

The word is probably the most ugly and offensive in the entire English language, it represents everything that is bad about our society and our countries history. It is inappropriate to use in any context and the fact that it has become to so many African-Americans like saying "dude" only enforces the fact that African-Americans in positions of influence on future generations should be educating them on what the word represents and why it must not be used in any context, not continuing to glorify it, that's rappers and bigots jobs, not our educators.

As I read the above comments on Victor Bush and Dr. White use of the "N" word.

I ask this. Would people brush it off so much if one of our white adminstrators, school boards members, or teaching staff said the same thing. I believe my fellow white educators would be land blasted. This is an ugly word that has pure hate historical conotations. This word should NOT be accepted by anyone of any race!

Use of this word by anyone in the district for any reason should draw a quick and decisive suspension along with training. A second time should lead to poceeding towards dismissal.

Victor Bush is a joke. He is the puppet of Dr. White. That is why he was put in the position he is in. He isn't qualified for it, that's for sure.

Anyone who has ever read "Framework for Understanding Poverty" about working with low income parents and students respectfully might remember that the recommendation is that you always speak in formal register. It does not sound as if Dr. White feels he needs to respect anyone. I have heard him make comments about how his mother raised him so very well, perhaps he is confused about that too. Someone who is well raised is respectful of all people, even those he disagrees with.

He speaks of his seventeen year old mother who always knew how to act well. If she knew how to act properly, she wouldn't have had him at seventeen.

There's no reason to attack Dr. White's mother. I disagree with most of what he does, but there's no need to bring innocent family members into the bashings.

In court once you have brought something up they say you have opened the door to discuss what you brought up, Dr. White has opened the door to discussing his mother. Last year he ruined one of the high school graduation I attended by going on a rant about how his mother was only seventeen when she had him and he knew how to act. He threw down the gauntlet and the audience reacted, when their student's name was read they started to cheer, dance, and boggie right over to the police, it became a game. None of it would have happened had he not challenged them.

For all we know his mother might have been married at seventeen and he was a planned child.
However I have seen Dr. White behave in a rude manner on numerous occasions.

IPS tried to send me a certified letter, but IPS sent the letter to an old address (ten years ago). Then my principal has mentioned that my contract is not being renewed for next year, well I called Indiana Professional Educators for help. They told me to hire an attorney and then apply to have my legal expenses covered by the policy. I talked to an attorney, but they want $10,000 up front. I am thinking about joining IEA and have the union handle the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  25. AnonymousMay 16, 2010

Anyone who walks into an IPS school to teach without belonging to IEA is crazy. Join tomorrow, if you are not a member. No matter how well you think you do your job the district may turn on you and you will be without recourse. The IEA is not doing a great job, but it is what we make it, and more members who get involved will make it stronger. Don't be a lamb being blindly lead to the slaughter.

The most recent rumor is that next year anyone who goes out on FMLA will return to the sub pool. Who will fight this fight for you if this happens to you?

What do you think non-teachers do when they are illegally fired (like for taking FMLA)? I would never belong to a union. Never, never, never.

I think it is important to note that Dr. White and leaders are focused on only part of the dress code. No one is sent home for lack of socks or that they are wearing no foot leggings. In for a penny in for a pound.

  29. Focusing on Dress code is like killing your own sheep because the fur is too white.
    It's retarded.
They should be focusing on kicking the bad students into alternatives.
I'm tired of having to watch and wait a student interrupt class for his own unnecessary need of attention.
I'm bored through out class all day.
They should organize a ranking system for students.
Some of us can't go to townships and charters.

Now i here they'll be firing staff from ATHS is >STUDENT< scores don't improve.
