Has This Ever Happened To You?

Tech wrestling coach frustrated with IPS

By Michael Pointer michael.pointer@indystar.com

Tech High School wrestling coach Mark Mendoza's frustrations reached a boiling point after the Titans missed a dual meet at Tipton on Tuesday night because Indianapolis Public Schools officials failed to provide a bus for the trip.

Mendoza, who is in his ninth year at the school, apologized to Tipton officials with a post on indianamat.com, a leading website for amateur wrestling in the state. Tipton was planning to hold senior night ceremonies Tuesday.

Mendoza, who teaches English at Tech, also criticized IPS and Tech officials, saying it continues a pattern of neglecting the wrestling program. He asked other schools to donate singlets so the Titans do not have to wear Tech uniforms for the rest of this season.

"I am not going to represent a school, a district and an administration that doesn't care about us,' Mendoza said in an interview later Wednesday. "If this would have been the first time something like this happened, that would be one thing. But it consistently happens.'

Mendoza said this was the first time the Titans actually missed a meet because of a transportation issue, but IPS officials have had to call in a driver at the last minute because they did not schedule one in advance on several occasions.

A bus was sitting in the Tech parking lot Tuesday, but Mendoza said it was to take the school's cheerleaders to Northwest High School for a boys basketball game.

"Last night, we fed right into the (IPS) stereotype,' he said. "We didn't show up and we didn't have the decency to call.'

Mike Lucas, whose son Jacob wrestles for the Titans, said a bus failed to show up to take the team to a tournament at Plainfield earlier this season; parents and coaches drove the wrestlers to that meet. Parents were upset when no Tech administrators showed up for the Titans' own senior night earlier this month, he said.

"I was disappointed (by Tuesday's events), but not shocked by any means,' said Lucas, a 1985 Tech graduate.

City athletic director Victor Bush said he was investigating the incident and isn't yet sure what happened, but he noted the meet was postponed because of snow last week before being rescheduled for Tuesday. Tech athletic director Keith Burke was out all last week while being treated for pneumonia, he said.

"We need to figure out where the ball was dropped so this type of incident never happens again,' said Bush, adding he called Tipton officials and apologized.

Bush said he was disappointed by Mendoza's comments, noting the coach has never told him of his frustrations. IPS officials are constructing a new wrestling room at Tech as part of ongoing renovations and have purchased new mats, he said.

"He needs to speak to me about that,' Bush said.

Tipton athletic director Kory Fernung said its wrestling team celebrated senior night with an intrasquad scrimmage instead. Fernung said he holds no hard feelings and expects Tipton to continue to play IPS teams in all sports.

"You can't fix (Tuesday)," he said. "Sitting around being mad and bitter over it does no one any good. You just get over it and move on.'

Mendoza said he's aware he might face some consequences for speaking out. The Titans have one of their best teams in recent years. Tech's Dominique Price is ranked fifth in the state at 112 pounds by indianamat.com; teammate Charlie McGinley is sixth at 119.

"They (Tech administrators) don't even watch us enough to know what is going on,' he said. "If there's a consequence, I'm willing to accept it.'

  1. Good for Coach Mendoza for being willing to speak out and take a stand. That's why nothing ever changes - no one will speak out. I really hope that the Star will keep track of this situation, and be willing to report any retributions brought upon the Coach. Keep up the good fight, my friend.

Although, seeing how IPS works, I'm sure the people responsible will get big pay raises.

  2. Coach, we're behind you with our support! If more of us in IPS had the integrity to speak out when the students are disappointed by the administration, then IPS might actually improve.

Maybe EW will donate some of his IPS clothing allowance to purchase a few singlets for the team.

  3. Good for him for speaking out! Pehaps if this happens more often we will actually see change for the better. Tech is not following Cultural Imperative #1 Children come First.

Dr. W. needs to work on that. OF course the bus money probably went to his son.

  6. @Bush said he was disappointed by Mendoza's comments, noting the coach has never told him of his frustrations.

Disappointed, my foot! Bush is not disappointed, he's just pissed because he got found out as a do-nothing, sorry excuse for the Head IPS AD. So what if Keith Burke was out sick, does that mean all athletic planning just grinds to a screeching halt! Bush better start scraping the egg off his face before it dries, cause dried egg is mighty hard to remove.

Hey, 39 staff....how did you like five months at 20? Any hints for future occupants?

  10. Yes he should be fired. No excuse for this type of thing to ever happen. However, I have heard that many times buses have been requested for field trips and have been turned down. Makes no sense to me. Kids need field trips.

  11. Victor and Eugene are both a couple of aging jock sniffers who care more about hanging out and around some old washed-up NFL or NBA players than they care about promoting young IPS athletes. IPS administrators are more concerned about someone following their multi-layered mind-boggling chain of command than they are about getting a job done when it's needed.

Excuses, excuses, and more excuses. Thought the district-wide Athletic Director was supposed to have his finger on the pulse of all athletic activities.

  13. OK - I know Mendoza - he is a big crybaby. Victor Bush has come in and cleaned up Keith Burke's messes since he has been out - why the ____ do you think he is being reassigned to Northwest? They have a less demanding Athletic Program, and they didn't notice the Athletic Directors, so they were stuck with Keith Burke for the next year. As far as the transportation issue - here's the pattern problem. What in the last 15 years consistently fails? TRANSPORTATION!! Come on, Mendoza - great coach, lousy teacher - big crybaby. Victor Bush - unorthodox, but still tries his best to pacify everyone - not just the Administrators. Gene Moore - BIG FAT WASTE OF $100,000 per year. You wanna trim the budget? Get his @$$ out of IPS and let Huggins run it. That seems to be the lesser of the 2 evils with the transportation department.

  14. Mendoza is not only a great wrestling coach but one of the best English teachers whom I have taught with.......The Tech administration has not cared about students or their educations since Bogart was put there. She has ruined Tech and will do the same to the Career Center........she needed to retire 10 years ago. Bush is a joke and knows damn well about the problems with sports at Tech. Now Bush is a liar.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't know how many wrestlers make up the team, but I do know coaches can be trained to drive the short buses that the high schools own. If Transpo is constantly a problem, Mendoza, be proactive and learn to drive the bus. Or ask the ROTC staff to drive you -- they drive their kids around!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Victor Bush was hand picked by Eugene White to take over the job of the retiring IPS athletic director. Then a position was created to allow the hiring of an assistant. Since that time, IPS athletics have lacked direction, accountability, and consistency. The job should have been posted since many more highly qualified candidates were not given the chance to apply.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wait I though a certain Dr took care of all the problems with transportation, two years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Transportation was never cared for - just covered up with a raise and the reassignment of staff. Come on, now. Those of you who think you know Victor - do you?! I don't. This is his 1st year - how would you feel if the masses decided on you the way you do about him? Come on now... the one with the reputation for always screwing up...Gene Moore with $100,000 year salary. Don't screw over the ones you don't know - throw the info out about the ones you do!! STAND UNITED. Quit picking on shit you don't know and STAND UP for what you do! Be a leader, not a follower!

    ReplyDelete
  19. @just covered up with a raise and the reassignment of staff.

And, this quote above just about sums up everything wrong with IPS! Reassign the losers and give them raises...well, hot damn, ain't that just dandy? We act like this is OK, that it's normal, that all school districts do this. It's not normal, it's not OK, and not all school districts give raises to inept people and then reassign them to get them outta the spotlight. Fire them, keep the money, and hire someone who CAN do the job. We're not in the business of giving or making jobs for adults!

  20. The requirements for driving any bus are quite rigid and insurance regulations are quite strict. Most of the vans no longer are legal to drive...how do you drive a bus and be responsible for the behavior on the bus.......for the money a coach earns, it is unfair to expect them to be the bus driver also. IPS has a contract and budget for that....it is just that Tech administration and the Transportation department are incompetent. Any teacher who has scheduled a field trip knows of the late arrivals, the no shows, the incorrect routing etc........there are those on here who want to blame Mendoza for speaking up but more of the IPS coaches should have the backbone to speak up...I have heard many of them complain but they are afraid to speak up.....Eugene White and Victor Bush are frauds and liars.

  21. It's negatve 16 wind chill and we are the only ones on time. I know the bus is going to be late because of the weather but my kid will have to go out at the same time just in case. This worries me because they said it's conditions for frostbite.

  25. Did you read your note from Li-Yen Johnson? She is getting paranoid and believes a conspiracy exists. She is referencing an email from the IN DOE in which a community meeting is announced regarding possible IPS school take-overs. She is becoming mentally unbalanced and is now a contributor to this blog under the guise of Standing United. Her comments are the incoherent, disjointed rants!

    Ladies and gentlemen:
This is very serious… .We have to take an active stand on this and speak up for ourselves. DOE is trying to keep the African Americans hooked and quiet so they can go ahead and turn IPS into mayoral control and/or IPS schools taken over by charters and take over entities. We should not be silent on this one!
Please be outspoken to all the people you know about this conspiracy! Lies people will tell about us have to stop! We cannot be silent!
Let us stand united and have one voice. Join me in this meeting! Bring your community partners to this meeting and question the motive of this meeting for sure.
The legislations that are going forward regarding Charter schools, vouchers, and Mayoral control will set IPS back for 30 years.

Here is an article about who is behind the school choice advocacy...even non profits have some ulterior motivation in taking over schools...
Li Yen may not know how to say it, and she may indeed be part of the problem but she is spot on in the comments about lies being told. Inner city schools are not responsible for the achievement gap, the gap occurs due to what doesn't happen to them at home and during school breaks. The fault lies in not recognizing this and adjusting accordingly. It is not doing more of the same thing, and we really have made some serious mistakes...take a look at READICIDE and the Paige Pardox...you don't even have to buy the book you can read it on line

  38. Here is what she means, when unigov came into play IPS was left alone, to be the "black" school district...it was left that way since unigov took away from Center Township residents the chance to be the majority voice in how Indianapolis was governed...but they were left with IPS, now they want to take IPS away from local control and let some wise and wonderful person elected by the whole county run the former Indianapolis school system...notice they aren't suggesting the mayor should take over Lawrence, Pike, or Washington Township...is blacks don't fuss it will be a fait de compli.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The thing is, study after study has shown that poverty and parental support are only part of the reason for the achievement gap. Middle-class students with supportive parents don't do as well in inner city schools as they do in other schools. Also, having options (charter schools or vouchers or whatever) improves parental involvement in the process versus having only one assigned school.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know about studies, but I've taught at IPS for a long time, and there's no question a huge number of kids fall through the cracks here that wouldn't fall through the cracks at a better school. I stay because I don't want to give up on these kids, but we're lying to ourselves if we pretend they're getting the same opportunitiy as they would in the townships.

The woman's come unhinged. It happens to even bright people who are scared of losing everything. She's freaked out; she's blown it; she's misused IPS email for sending conspiracy theory ideas to community partners in a major metropolitan area.

  42. Readicide contradicts everything the IPS Literacy Coaches drill into our heads. We have been chastised during English class for teaching "content" rather than "strategies". We have been 'thinking out loud', 'graphic organizing', 'talking to the text' until the kids are blue in the face and so are we, the teachers. Friends, it's NOT working. All these consultants and expensive strategy programs are ruining reading for all students.

I sat through a Professional Development where two Literacy Coaches were attempting to "teach a new strategy using a strategy". There's got to be some good meat (content) in reading or else, what's the purpose for reading?

This thing rots, from the inside out. What Mendoza blows the whistle on is the tip of the iceberg. DOE, take it over, from the top down!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. About the LA story above.....I read it and saw that part of the issue is something I personally witnessed here in IPS at a community high school.

"Students were taught by a revolving-door succession of substitutes who served as little more than babysitters, the lawsuit said. One substitute gave each student a C because she simply didn't know what grade to give them, the suit said."

In the IPS instance, there had been so many different subs for a Biology I class that somebody from Central Office decided that all the students should receive a 'C' for the semester. Same happened for a 9th grade Social Studies class. These were credit classes, not middle school classes. I wondered then, and still do, how Central Office could do that and not realize it was illegal.

  47. The current system has forced good coaches who care about the kids out.

My older daughters were athletes for a coach who still works at the school they attended.

My younger daughter and son now attend that same school and they are coached by someone who spends more time showing interest in another sports seasons during their season than to actually coaching the team. He (the current coach) speaks of how sweet the money for coaching their team and how it helps supplement the coaching stipend for the sport he really enjoys. He cannot believe how beneficial it has become to his families budget.

This same coach does little coaching and has not spoken of the importance of proper attire, uniforms, and equipment. Looks lost when I speak of strategies that the former coach used to getting the athletes competitive during competition. Then did not know many of the rules. After one contest this past season the coach was speaking of the official who called the team for the violations as someone who did not understand the IPS culture. I know from the older sisters this official was/is very good and officiates on the state level.

When I have confronted the former coach speaks party line that it was time for a change and his ways were dated and that recruiting was not going well. His wife though when he is not around (getting food at the concession stands recently at our church) though tells another story of how he was told to resign or be evaluated out.

It seems IPS in observation IPS is focused on just a few sports and the others are there just to supplement the bigs sports pay for coaches. No longer does the district try to have competative teams from my observation.

Shame on the district. It is good that this coach in the article has the courage to speak out. Telling the truth about the current lack of intelligence in the the athletic fields of IPS from the top down.

This coach as someone said will probably be disciplined for speaking out in public. I wish the very best for him and hope it does not happen. More informants are needed in IPS athletics. A closer look at qualifications of a coach is looked at for the the so called minor coach. They should not be handed to someone to supplement another coaches pay.

This is just my opinion though.

Statistics from 2010 on IPS (a must read)

The most revealing info from this report is 'the how' IPS showed an increase in high school graduation rates for 2010. To find out, check out the percent of graduates from each high school that received a Waiver in order to graduate. Arlington remains the Waiver Capitol of IPS with 40% of the 2010 Graduation Class receiving diplomas based upon Waivers. The other high schools were not far behind with the exception of BRHS at only 4% graduating with Waivers. Deception is now an art.

I am not sure what he was saying about culture.

I can tell you from my older daughters teams that were either first or second in the conference and top five in the city with individuals going regionals had eight who competed at one level or another in collegiate level and of 23 girls during their stay they competed with only two did not attend school after competing in HS for that coach. And one of the two that did not go for higher education went into the Army.

In my current three years of having the younger daughter compete so far. The teams are not near competative and even full. Not one kids (even my daughter) has been coached to the point they could even compete JV for the other coach in my opinion. The kids are not getting offers and not getting exposure. Nor does the coach seem concerned about teaching and getting the kids opportunities. This is probably due to the current coach more interested in his other sport and this one is just suplemental income.

Maybe he was refering to the fact that kids now are not going forward and he is just treating the sport like a club. Does not seem to care about competative of teaching skills and motivating them to succeed after high school. Maybe that is the culture he is refering about.

  63. One problem with I.P.S. is that the teachers are forced to change their teaching strategies/methods too often. Downtown administrators are always coming up with the next BIG IDEA for student success. The teachers do not get a chance to teach by way of any one strategy long enough to see improvement or digression with academic success.

  65. So much to say here. The bus and the wrestling coach: Most teachers, not just in IPS, are expected to do double and triple duties for NO pay. Many of us tutor and coach academic clubs, but these activities, which may actually enhance a student's future career are not nearly as important as career paths like professional cheer leading and pro wrestling!

I understand the coach's frustration, but engage your brain before you run your mouth. Do you just want attention and righteous anger or do you want to solve a problem? That sort of entitlement and anger is not helpful, but it does explain why some of the wrestlers are so poorly behaved and treat adults other than the coach as people to be ignored or intimidated.

Sorry about the bus, but some of us are still trying to get heat in the rooms, books, desks and ink for printers. Seems like a bigger problem than a fouled up bus situation. You can get a license to drive the bus. Most coaches at other school do. Most of us don't have the knowledge to fix the steam heat or conjure chairs.
