More Problems at Tech

Anyone catch this story?

Tech students charged with gun possession

Star report

Two Tech High School students were arrested today after a handgun was found in a car parked in the student parking lot across from campus, Indianapolis Public Schools officials said.

The male students, 17 and 18, face preliminary charges of carrying a handgun without a license on school property, possession of a firearm on school property and dangerous possession of a firearm. The students' names were not released.

The loaded handgun, a .22 caliber semi-automatic, was found after school officials received a tip, according to an IPS news release. Both students were suspended pending expulsion, the release said.

  1. Several comments have been made on this blog that Sarah Bogard, Principal of Tech, has allowed the high school to become an out of control chaotic mess. Do you think anyone downtown knows or cares? Where is the monitor for our school?

  2. Do you really believe any principal can control what gangster type students have in their cars? This could have happened at any IPS high school on any given day.

  3. It is going to take someone getting hurt - or worse - for some of these secondary principals to get the boot.

  4. Okay, so just to review. According to IPS B.S. teachers cannot be expected to teach in IPS because parents are poisoning their kids against education and white people. And as a group we should always fight accountability measures because we can't be held responsible for students. Teachers can also not be expected to create a culture of learning or control discipline problems or student safety. But principals are different. They ARE responsible for students. And even though they have much less interaction with students than teachers, principals should be blamed if students break the law, to the extent that they should actually lose their jobs over it. Do I have that about right?

  5. The above poster is either clueless, an administrator or has poor reading comprehension skills. No teacher objects to accountability measures. They just have to be common sense and actually measureable. Teachers can and do create learning enviornments and control discipline every day. It was just be much easier if some of the high school administrations like Tech would follow the discipline policy. Why should principals have less interaction with students? Are they afraid of them? Part of the problem is the principals hide in their offices, have two hour lunches or attend meetings and are isolated from their own schools. [Not all principals] The principal at Tech strolls in daily with her Starbucks cup up to two hours later than students and teachers.

  6. Everytime I post anything even remotely resembling what you posted above in regard to teachers, I get accused of being Jane Kendrick, which is apparently the lowest of insults. I don't disagree that principals must make school safety a priority, but I often see a double standard here with regard to principals and teachers. I don't know Bogard, so maybe she is bad, but in general, I don't see principals as the enemy as much as many people here do.

  7. Tech campus is too big and too spread out to effectively manage student behavior...it is like a small college campus and I don't know how one administator can possibly "manage" student behavior. The gun problem is one of our society...this is not to say that the administrator should not be more "present" and known among the students. I think there are layers of responsibility there. Also, Tech is receiving many of the students who weren't going to "make it" at BRHS - they have so many kids with issues at Tech.

  8. I posted this on an other thread, but think it is relevant to this discussion as well.....

I ask this as a taxpayer. And NO, I am not a teacher nor an administrator who is making my identity up. I am simply a taxpayer.

Blogmaster, I wonder if you could start a thread of discussion on whether IPS needs to have massive changes - perhaps breaking the district up into smaller districts or going to all charter schools?

These kids in IPS just have so many challenges to face in life and I just don't know if a huge IPS bureaucracy (which seems to create layers of confusion and probably not enough accountability at every level - from the superintendent on down) - is the best way to help these kids to succeed in school and in life.

Since I went to a neighborhood elementary school and loved it, I have always been a supporter of IPS vs. charter schools because IPS has traditionally been made up of neighborhood elementary schools.

If given the choice, I would rather see IPS broken down into smaller districts (perhaps four) and bureaucracy downsized substantially with a smaller number of students in each district which might hopefully improve the administrative process, focusing more on individual student needs, improving teacher and student morale and comeraderie all through the ranks.

So, just wondering if anyone else has any opinions about this?

  9. The best thing that could happen to IPS is to dissolve it and incorporate the schools with the townships. More likely than not it will happen.
The top heavy admins and the salaries are outrageous. No wonder the schools are so behind the times.

  10. My God, its the teachers fault, we are the only one working, the administration is hiding in their offices just checking emails. Sarah needed to go about eight years ago as she is lazy, and truly hates the students. The rest of the Deans are just fools. Who hired Sertic as a Dean, didn't he get fired from a northern county school system? He sucked as a teacher at Broad Ripple, God IPS can really hire the winners? Dean Sertic is such a joke.

  11. Administrative changes to occur shortly include:

    1) Jane Ajabu will retire.

    2) Jane Kendricks will become the HR Director.

    3) Jackie Greenwood will assume some of Kendricks' current duties.

    4) Linda Casey will leave HR and monitor teachers along with Dr. Bridgwaters.

    5) Deb Leser will be the new principal at Washington.

Sweep of Tech students’ cars nets swords

    Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — Three students at Arsenal Technical High School are in trouble for inappropriate conduct.

Indianapolis police on today inspected all students’ cars parked on campus for weapons. The sweep was prompted by recent discoveries of guns in city schools.

Two Arsenal Tech students were arrested Tuesday for bringing a gun on campus.
Police say they found no guns but did find two swords in the trunk of one car. They also found a military-style utility knife and steak knives.

Officers arrested three Arsenal Tech students, an 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds. All are facing preliminary misdemeanor charges of possession of a knife on school property.

Police Chief Steve Garner tells WISH (Channel 8) that the search was legal.

  13. How do some of you know all of these things? How do people already know placements for next year?

  14. Speaking of changes...I just heard today that Sherry Eggers is back in the system. Does anyone know what her duties are? In my humble opinion, she was one of the good ones.

  15. For the record, the middle schools and high schools have been the worst they have ever been under the leadership of Dr. Jane Kendricks. Great job Jane. You made something go from bad to worse.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Don't forget that Prudence Bridgwaters has dirty hands. Gene White is go down in history and the black superintendent who started out with the support of the community but lost everything because he played politics.

  17. Mrs Bogart is misplaced, she should have been in charge of buildings and grounds for the system. The woman knows how to get the most bang for your buck. The remodel she supervised at BRHS was beautiful, and everything that was budgeted for was done. As I recall she was in the office and the carpet was laid incorrectly, the company was saying they couldn't correct it, and she calmly looked them in the eye and said "then I guess we can't pay you". They came back the next day and fixed the problem.

This problem is symptomatic of every problem in IPS, we don't recognize peoples strengths and let them play to those strengths. I've talked to someone who knows the much maligned Bridgwaters and says she is a middle school curriculum expert, why is she dealing with instructional delivery and school leadership when her area of expertise is curriculum development?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Prudence Bridgwaters know nothing about curriculum development. She was a horrible teacher, assistant principal, and principal. Look at her history. She makes a name by lying and cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Prudence's misdeeds will live long within IPS. Larry Yarrell and Phylis Barnes are piss poor leaders who once worked for Prudence. Let me make it clear, Greg Allen and Jeffrey White were to strong leaders. If Dr. White has any sense, he would call both of them and seek forgiveness for Jane Kendricks and Prudence Bridgewaters wrongdoings. Removing Prudence would boost morale in the district.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dr. White out of the picture would boost morale. Dr. Johnson needs to take his place. You can say what you want about her clothes, but she at least tries to do the right thing. She is really in it for the children. The problem is the staffing under her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh my gosh. What an airhead you must be... you cannot get under her skirt, she already has someone else there. She already is running the show. If you were in the know, you would have heard her asking for her bonus and raise. She has been here long enough to be part of the problem. As a director, she it was stripper parties that interested her, not children

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jeff White, can you get a recommendation from IPS administrators for a new job? Maybe Prudence can give you a recommendation for the wonderful job (not) that you supposedly did at John Marshall. You were such a wonderful curriculum leader, YEAH Right!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. "As a Director, she it was stripper parties..."
    What does that even mean?
