Run, Don't Walk

Next year is the election for school boards. Know anybody who should run for IPS?

  1. Jeff White should toss his hat into the ring.

His only other time testing the political waters was against Andre Carson, who'd be impossible to beat by anyone in Indy.

  2. Anyone who has considerable experience operating a successful large private business with a large budget. Someone who knows that money does not grow on trees and knows how to run a business on a balanced budget. Someone who is confident, has high self-esteem, has the courage of strong convictions, and does not feel the need to always 'make nice'.

  3. Yes! I say Jeff White should run. Wouldn't that make for interesting board meetings?

  4. I would actually go and observe the School Board if Jeff White and Kelly Bentley could actually utilize the true power that the Board posesses.
Oh, the irony of watching Eugene White have Jeff White as his boss.

  5. I meant possesses, not posesses. Sorry!

  6. Only part of the seats are up for reelection.....who will be up for reelection? I think we could amass a sizeable fund of donations to get rid of some of the bobble heads and someone who would speak up to the bully, Eugene.

  7. I think Bentley, Cohen, and possibly Brown....

  8. Does Jeff White live in the district?

  9. I have checked on the IPS homepage and find nothing about School Board members' terms. Nada.

Like someone wrote earlier, Brown is a pastor in a non-denominational ministry, Gore is a retired as an airline reservationist, Zaphirou is retired from IU as a researcher, Cohen is a professor emeritus which means he's retired, Bush is a college employee, and Arnold and Bentley work for non-profits.

  10. Jeff White lives in the 4300 block of Illinois. Is that in an IPS district?

  11. you won't find that informaiton anywhere. You won't find the districts on the wesbiste or anywhere on the internet. You won't find when the terms are up. Stange......

  14. spring elections 2008 results
    Gore at large
    Cohn at large open position
    District 1 Zaphiriou
    District 2 Busch
    District 4 Arnold

so this election cycle it should be
    one open position currently Cohn
    District currently Kelly Bently
    District 5 currently Michael Brown

If you want to run visit http://www.indy.gov/EGOV/COUNTY/CLERK/ELECTION/Pages/home.aspx

Is there a procedure to recall board members?

  15. if the above poster is correct then it seems we need to recruit and raise money for the District 5 seat held by Michael Brown. He is the president of the bobble heads and is intimidatesd and afraid of bully Eugene White.

  16. Not only that, but he does not do things as honestly as a School Board president should.
    Michael Brown needs to go!

  17. I have never laid eyes on School Board President Michael Brown in my school! From what I've heard, he only visits Northwest where his son is a student.

His only "Comments from the Commisioners" in the Board minutes say things such as: "Keep reading to your children", or "I attended a track meet between Arlington and Northwest and IPS has a lot of good athletes."

These are lame comments from the President of any School Board. They are nothing more than generic comments pulled from his hip pocket when asked at a Board meeting if he has any comments. He is shallow and lacks depth of purpose!

A School Board President should be doing his homework and on top of the issues.

  18. A school board president should never interfere in the school's discipline of his child.

  19. Michael Brown describes himself as Pastor for Positive Force Ministries. The ministry has no website or any mention on Google other than through his association with the IPS School Board. Sounds kind of bogus.

Also, what's with this Dr. title? From what school did he earn a doctorate? Doctor of what? If he had a Doctor of Divinity degree, surely there'd be mention on Google. His doctorate must be from a mail order diploma mill like so many pastor's titles are unless they're affiliated with a major denomination.

What university/college awarded him his undergraduate degree?

  20. Which School Board members terms will be up in Spring of 2010? I can't find it posted anywhere on the IPS homepage or website.

  21. Again, Brown, Bentley, and Cohen. I think we're in trouble. No one says the good ones will run again. We need to find someone for every position.

  22. Maybe he was in Dexter Suggs graduating class at IWU.

  23. Everyone here brings up some good points.Good luck finding people to run though. Unfortunately most families don't care enough to vote nor care. This board has been together longer than any school board in the city. Check it out!

  24. My name is Annie Roof. I am a graduate of IPS, and a parent. I have two children in IPS right now, and a younger child in preschool. I am running for school board in the at-large position. When I read the comment that someone posted saying, "someone who knows money does not grow on trees and knows to run a business on a balanced budget. Someone who is confident, has a high self esteem, has the courage of strong convictions, and does not feel the need to always make nice", I truly feel that I am that person. I have a website that I have not quite finished, but feel free to check it out at www.annieforschoolboard.com.
I am happy to answer any questions.

  25. Thanks Annie you seem to know how to budget
I hope to read your platform
We need strong people to run for the board not passive members for IPS

  26. Annie,
Way to be courageous enough to come on here and put yourself out there.
    Good luck to you!

  27. Best wishes to Ms. Roof. Nice to hear that someone who has strong convictions about right and wrong is interested in becoming a member.

  28. As a former Teacher at John Marshall, Jeffrey White would win the school board election hands down. However, I prefer to have him as our Superintendent. Bentley, Arnold, and Cohen would vote him right in. Brown and Bush won't go for it because he knows how much money University of Indpls is getting and your skin color and association with the concerned clergy doesn't mean anything to him.

  29. I like Jeffrey White. My only concern is that he does not play the game well. Instead of walking away from a fight he knows he can win, he rather fight to kill. Someone needs to teach the guy to pick his battles. Jane Kendricks and Prudence Bridgewaters wasn't worth fighting.

  30. I worked with Jeff White for a year here in IPS. Frankly, Jeffrey would make a better School Board member than Principal because his 'skills set' is more attuned to community organization, development, reaching the masses, and grass roots level politics. He's a natural at those things. He is a man who does not like to compromise his integrity which is both a good thing (for a Board member) and a bad thing (for keeping your building level administrative job in IPS). He'd do a fine job as an IPS Board Member where people of integrity and courage of their convictions are direly needed

IPS hired him several years ago; however, they placed in him the wrong seat on the bus. Rather than keep in on the bus and put him in the right seat, they kicked him off the bus entirely. That was their loss. He has the ability/skills to be an asset to any School District if placed in a position that matches his skills set.

  31. Hey Mrs. Bewley:

As a former teacher at John Marshall, Jeffrey White was the best Principal we had. The faculty and administration raised the ISTEP scores the highest the school have ever had. Don't try to escape from putting over 200 of the disruptive O/U students at JM and not allowing the administration to remove them. I wish Jeffrey White would release the tapes with Jane Kendricks and Prudence Bridgwaters talking about they would reassign him if he does not follow the rules. No suspensions, no media coverage, and no parent complaints. Last year, he let some of the teachers hear the tape. JEFFREY WHITE, you read this blog!! Please release the tape.

  32. That recording was released months ago and posted on indianabarrister.com. It's also been linked at this blog more than once.

  33. The O/U Program is a complete travesty as it's now organized.

Why not place all the O/U students and their teachers into one building? They'd at least have plenty of available resources such as Social Workers, several counselors, etc. As it now stands, the O/U programs are spread across the city into all the community high schools. The community high school administrators spend an extraordinary amount of their precious time and efforts in dealing with these unfortunate students who seem to have more behavior problems/issues than the regular ed students. Also, the O/U students' scores are low, rock-bottom in fact. These low scores continue to drag down the scores of the community high schools which eventually will mean they'll be forced to close by the State for not making AYP. It's almost as if placing the O/U programs at these schools was an intentional design to make them look bad. Many of us feel the community high schools are the School Board's dumping grounds at present.
