Have You Heard

There's talk of a shake-up in the Central Office is coming next week? Has anyone heard anything they would like to share?

  1. I have heard that the Career Center at Tech is closing. The classes that are kept will become Tech H.S. classes under cluesless Tech principal Sara Bogard. At least, they will have plenty of flowers, shrubs and bushes when she takes over. They may not get much support for the educational process from Bogard but neither does the rest of Tech.

  2. The principal at my high school has an appointment with Dr. White during the last week of February. Evidently this is when the principal will learn what White has in store for next year.

  3. Heard that Justin Hunter will get a cush ed center job (replace Sally Callahan) and leave school 15- Question is.. Can he take his GIRLFRIEND Miriam with him??? And will she be able to bring her Mom? Nepotism sure is ALIVE & WELL in IPS!

  4. HAVE YOU HEARD!!! PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSE SHOULDN'T THROW STONES!!!!

  5. When is the next board meeting? Maybe the personnel section will list any recent assignment changes. ??

  6. The new "bored" report is out. Nothing noted about Administrators at all!

  7. I bet Justin Hunter gets to take House.....it has to be a package deal!!!

  8. I know there are already 4-5 elementary principals retiring plus rumors of Hunter and Bakehorn heading downtown. I've heard there are going to be a few other elementary principals retire or be put back in the classroom. Maybe, just maybe, IPS will go out and hire some high quality principals. I work for a principal that was hired last year and he is doing a tremendous job.

  9. Justin Hunter as a district director? Has he proven his management at the school level? Do his scores show ample growth? If a Principal can not lead a staff to enhance student achievement, then how can he lead a district? Do leaders actually need to look good? Talk the game? Find people that can cover their @##? OR is it about the students? I think of other administrators that are doing great things which are being overlooked.

Dr. White, I hope you read this. Good leadership brings staff to the level of professional performance through collaboration and inspiration. A good leader follows mandates by leading his team of teachers to the goal of performance to give EVERY child the opportunity to learn. Does Justin Hunter even know the names of the students that are performing and those that are not? Can he tell you how he has instructed/facilitated teachers to reach those students that are being overlooked? On paper he looks good, but he has no idea who they are. Has he identified the students named "Sam"? - the one that has no home, quiet and needing a personal investiment? Is Sam being lost? Are the Sams being identified and brought to Hunter's attention? OR does he even care?

Dr. Justin Hunter, If you are to lead me then how do I respect you? None of your teachers do. You can not tell me that if you are all about the children, then why do your teachers feel that you are all about you? You have not learned how to filter. Your upmost responsibility is to foster learning and guide teachers to enhance learning. It seems to me that you overload them with paper work to make you look good. Maybe it's time to regroup!!!!

Feel free to ask your teachers in a staff meeting any of these items - they will not respond. BUT I know how they feel!

  10. This is the second and final time I will be writing on this site. I think that this statement calls for the views of someone who really has a stake in this school and my community.

Most of you don't live down here and really don't care. Most of you on here are getting a fat check to be at school 15. My child goes there because of my choice. If it was not for me and the other parents who chose to send our kids to your school, you would not have a job.

As a parent I feel that your comments about Dr. Hunter are out of line, uninformed, and pathetic. When was the last time you were so friendly with him that you could call him Justin.

I didn't like him when he first arrived either and I didn't like this one teacher who would stand on the coner of Michigan at the end of the school day everyday and stop traffic playing and dancing.

I told him then that you had some aweful and nasty teachers (at least that one for sure) and you need to do something about her before I call downtown.

Everyday she would stand on the corner dancing like she was in a club on a pole. He defended that woman as a good teacher and called for me to be calm and to trust him.

I can tell all of you this much...School 15 was out control before he came!!! The man talked me into not pulling my child out of that school and to give him a try. I don't see one comment from a negative parent. This mess is from a hating teacher who has no life at all.

I know this much...any teacher or principal that has all of his people liking him must not really be that good. The better you are the more people will talk. So, Dr. Hunter let them talk and get rid of that pole swinging teacher before I call down town! Now she's nastey!

Last time I checked you don't have to work at his school if you don't like him. Maybe then my child would get a better education. If the education my child is currently receiving is from people like you...then maybe the new charter school coming over here is really better for them.

I know this too...when I started seeing how he demands the best out of everyone including me, my thoughts changed.

Wow! I didn't know that that there was so many people in IPS was so aweful and negative.

The more you attempt to state negative remarks about him, the more I appreciate the fact that he is at our kids school and i hope that they don't take him down town. We need him here for our kids here!

    ReplyDelete
  11. If he's making a difference then we need to hear that. I am the post you responded to. Let's take a look at the overall scores of the school. I am glad you are happy with School #15. I am a good teacher. I completely support parent/guardian support. Keep it coming. It makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey! You really teach with us? What planet are you on stupid? He offered us a chance to transfer If we wished. Last time I checked you weren't one of them...maybe you're afraid no body would hire you again.

BTW why are you hiding on this blog? Go tell him to his face so that the rest of us can see how stupid you really are!

You're right he is stupid...he hired you! Why don't you go and tell him to his face how we feel on Tuesday Morning sense you so much about how we feel.

You don't know how I feel as a teacher so don't speak for me!!

  13. To the person who posted above about Dr. Hunter not know the names of all of his students, accroding to your school's website there are over 600 plus students in the building. It dosen't even make logical sense to know all of them. What principal does? You are a teacher and you don't know the kids failing ISTEP in your own room or even how to improve your scores. If you did, your school would pass ISTEP.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why yall keep commenting on hunter? is that all you got on the man? U sound jealous do u want him?

    ReplyDelete
  15. People, your school 15 has not passed ISTEP for 6 or more years. I just checked the DOE website and school 15 has been failing for years.

    ReplyDelete
  16. As a young black male teacher in college at U of I Now I see what being gifted, educated, and black will get you...success and haters! You go Frat make yo' haters and make some more GREAT SIGMAS in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, that is correct. That is why they put new teachers and a new principal in that building. Last year after the first year with the new staff, over half of the new teachers were replaced with people making stupid comments like the teacher above. How do you expect the students to pass ISTEP when comments are made by an ignorant teacher like the one above.

My child was one of the ones failing, but now is encouraged by this new staff (expect for the one above). I am seeing improved grades and excitement about going to school. I feel Dr. Hunter should stay and is doing a great job in such a short amount of time.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Is he a Sigma? G.O.M.A.B if he is! Handle em' make em' holla and don't forget the 12inch rule while handling yo' business. Run dat school like our brothers (Carter G. Woodson, Booker T. Washington, A Phillip Randolph, George W. Carver) this country. Our founders would be proud to know a Sigma is an IPS teacher or principal.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I guess he is a Sigma. The Sigma's are on the site now and we are educators from inside and outside IPS with over 26 years experience. Being a Sigma says it all, no wonder their hating. M.A.B. have that teacher who's hating come work for me in one of the nearby districts. I'll show them what work is!

  20. Dr. Hunter looks and plays the part. That is why he is getting a downtown job.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't see that Mr. Hunter has earned a doctorate degree on his license records. I thought you needed to have a doctorate degree to use the title "Dr." before your name.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If he is as good for the school as some above say, why take him out and put him at the ed center where he will no longer be able to do anything to benefit the children? The schools are where the really good people are needed, not downtown. What a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "Any teacher or principal that has all of his people liking him must not really be that good."

This parent is misinformed.YOU can have the respect and love from your staff if you listen, show you care, and follow by example. I have worked for two principals in 11 years now and my latest when is like a minister at our school. He cares about everyone- staff and students and shows it everyday. Everyday is a "fantastic day." At first we thought we were skeptical of his "ways" but we soon realized this person was for real. You can have the love and respect of your students and still run a great school that is a huge plus to the local community. Our parent involvement is as high as it has ever been because of this person. The staff is motivated regardless of the high mobility rates, challenging students and parents and some of the DUMB initiatives that are mandated either from downtown OR the state...DUMB. This person is the kind of leader that makes you feel good about what you are trying to do. You are willing to go the extra mile with after school tutoring or volunteering to spend a Sunday taking some of the best students in the school to a hockey game at Conseco. Being a bully doesn't work for the students in the long run, and it doesn't work for the principals either. I love my school and look forward to going to work every day! Wish you all had the same experience! Have a great three day!

    ReplyDelete
  24. People play doctor all the time.

    Where's Dr. Averitte now?

    ReplyDelete
  25. To answer the post above about all the elementary principals... I too hope they go out and find some new leaders. I'm scared all downtown will do is fill the positions with assistants from all three levels. To have a MS or HS assistant run an elementary building is a big mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To everyone complaining about Justin Hunter, maybe you need to check yourselves as well. I have been in that school countless times and while I do feel that Dr. Hunter is arrogant and feels he is better than everyone else, the teachers are equally as rude. Out of all the schools I work at, this one is the worst. The only appreciative, outgoing and respectful person I have encountered in that building is the secretary.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hunter has an EdD from Nova Southeastern. He is very proud of his accomplishment. The Indiana DOE is very slow to update their records. I have had a graduate degree for ten years and they have yet to realize it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is simply aweful! I've been in that school too on countless times and I feel the very opposite. The teachers there are some of the best I've seen. They are always willing to assist, support, and attempt new ideas from my department.

It appears this is a TRUE man hunt! Everybody who has a brain and has worked with him and the teachers know that they're innovative in their approach and are doing great things. School 15 and has my full support and the support of my team.

At least the man will talk with me, hear my position, and attempt to implement the district mandates when I visit. Most other buildings I'm in, I've gotten now where or the principals and the teachers are not interested. Go School 15!

    ReplyDelete
  29. How effective has Dr. Hunter been at school 15?

This is the second year as the leader of the school. I would argue that his effectiveness should be measured by student achievement. This is easily checked by looking at the school's ISTEP scores. The scores for 2009-2010 are not out yet; however, looking at the scores for 2008-2009 we can assess his effectiveness. School 15 students took the ISTEP twice last year. At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year 55% of the students passed ISTEP. By the end of the 2008-2009 school year only 48% of the students passed.

Does someone see a problem with this? Why did fewer students pass at the end of the year than the beginning?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The poster above reflects the attitude of Dr. White...that is force them to respect you....and if they like you then you are not doing your job. Hunter has bought into that 1950's way thinking. Justin needs to earn respect which he has not done yet. Playing favoritism with his one of the female teachers, repeated absences and mean spirited behavior will not develop respect. We all enjoyed the frat and sorority life but that was for college. Justin in the real world now and all of this rah rah frat stuff is out of place. Nova Southeastern...lol it may not be on his DOE record because there is a chance it is not recognized by the authorities. It is even worse than Indiana Weslyan.

  31. Hello IPS-BS Bloggers,

As the pole-dancing" teacher - slight exageration, but I am ok with that title- actually rather honored, good pole dancers make more than most 1st year teachers. Techincally, I never touched that telephone pole- there were a lot of rusty nails and I did not want to have to have a tetnus shot. I did dance around and have fun with the kids and parents, while directing traffic. I was out there for an hour a day, both morning and afternoon- I loved it. I got to know the parents, community people, and most of all- we did make sure that the traffic slowed down for the kids. Since I only had one parent complaint all year, I think I did pretty well out there, even if I danced and had fun.

Every school has their share of problems from top-down. No one will be pleased all the time, every day. The only thing that matters is that we all feel that we have helped a child at the end of the day. While I may not always get along with my administrator or my collegues, I do know that every single one of us goes to work daily with the intention of helping a child, regardless if we are the school principal or the custodian.
I agree with the posters above that have stated, tell your administrator if you are unhappy. I agree with the parent that complained about my dancing- if you don't like something- complain! You won't always get the results that you like, but you will get heard, and that is most important.
I do agree with whomever posted that our school secretary is wonderful- She is a great person with a keen fashion sense!!!

Have a wonderful day- Sarah McClain-Fowler

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks Sarah! I know that you and Dr. Hunter have not agreed on issues. I know that I would rather teach with you, our other teachers and him, then with any other principal.

I love my school, my grade level, and my administrators. I choose to come to this school and I plan on staying. The rest of you who don't work with us on a daily basis please SHUT UP. This is our school and proud of it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey Sarah thanks! I'm glad one of us who works here spoke out. You've truely earned our respect and we will be better because you choose to say something.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nova Southeastern not recognized? Are you insane? Look up the school, visit the campus, check Florida's DOE website, view the programs, read the different schools they have, then talk about something you know. No, I'm not a teacher, I'm a parent who lived in South Florida at one time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Who are you to tell people on a blog to shut up? Proves the point that many of the teachers there are, in fact, rude. Be proud of your school, but also know that people do have their own opinions and my experience there is not a good one.
Sarah, good for you, for being proud of what you do! You have to bring fun into your job!

    ReplyDelete
  36. We're not rude, we're just tired of being picked on and under the constant eyes of persons such as yourself who can find nothing or very little to say that is positive about us.

Sorry about your feelings, but don't come into our hall and try to destroy our dream team from the outside. If people don't like one of us, sorry! We like each other and our parents do too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am not a school 15 teacher; however, I must protest at the attack on Dr. Hunter's degree. Nova Southeastern is a respectable school. It is regionally accredited in the same way that IU, and Purdue are accredited. Earning a doctorate is an accomplishment that should be admired. Not everyone has the ability to persevere through the difficulties that a doctorate requires. The fact that Dr. Hunter has earned a doctorate is respectable. Indeed, many IPS administrators have never taken the initiative to earn such a degree. So, while some may disagree with Dr. Hunters's leadership; don't personally attack the man and his accomplishments. He has obviously invested a significant portion of his life to serving IPS, children, and the Indianapolis community.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lets move on from Dr. Hunter. Lets look at schools such as Key, 51, 109, 63, 44, 106, and the others. It seems that you all work at schools that are all making AYP and are Blue Ribbion for three or more years straight.

So, for discussion, lets pull up the scores of several elementary schools and see where they stand. Their principals have been there for years and they still are not making it, why is that?

    ReplyDelete
  39. The simplest answer would be that there are a multitude of variables that affect how well students perform on state mandated testing. The parents prior education, parent value of education, parents income level, the community and its values, the level of transience in the school, the percentage of ESL students in the school, and so many more.

Teachers, and administrators, are often blamed for whether their students do well on the state mandated tests. However, many of the variables that predict whether the students will do well on the tests are out of the control of the teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I here that some schools will be reconstituted next year? Will it be your principal? Will it be your teachers? In fact several elementary principals are being moved around. From what I gathered...any school that has not shown improvements on ISTEP in the last 3 years are on the table.

Lets see how the blog reads when its your school in few weeks who gets the notice.

Are they being moved because their scores are good and they are effective? The way I read this blog, I thought Dr. Hunter's school was the only one in IPS not making AYP?

O...he's been in the district for two years and we need something to fresh to talk about...that's right.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Sarah. We understood coming into this school that it would be a challenge. I am not saying that everything is perfect, but the grass always looks greener on the other side. As far as ISTEP scores, the test was way more difficult in the spring than it was in the fall. So you can't compare apples to oranges. The school has been reconstituted for two years and Rome wasn't built in a day.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sorry about "here" it is "hear"

    ReplyDelete
  43. You can be accredited and still not respected. That is where the term diploma mill started. Some schools get accredited and then have no standards for achieving those credits. There are a couple of those around here.......many of Dr. White's people have degrees from one of them. We all know which one that is!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. It is quite ironic when teachers (or principals) whine about respect and professionalism and cannot use the English language correctly, even when posting on a blog. It's called spell check, people! use it! I also teach in an elementary school, and am amazed at the games and drama played out by the teachers and principal. We wonder why our 5th and 6th grade girls get caught up in the drama. Take a good look at the adults in the building; what great role models!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The principal at my school knows all the children's names AND their scores for reading , math, and SRI. Her name is Melissa Richards.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My last three principals wouldn't know any such thing...Beane, McDowell, and Matthews. Please bring in new leaders!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. "...many of Dr. White's people have degrees from one of them. We all know which one that is!!"

Care to share which one that is? Dr. White has a doctorate from Ball State. I think that Ball State is a respectable school.

Oh, and a diploma mill is a school that is unaccredited.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm laughing at two posts up...I worked for 2 of the 3 and completely agree!

    ReplyDelete
  49. To the poster 5 above. It is not possible to get accredited without meeting industry-accepted standards. Being accredited MEANS it meets the standards set by others in the industry (in this case, colleges.) It's like saying you got AP credit without meeting standards. It's impossible because meeting the standards is the only way to get credit.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Justin does know the data for his school. We've met in staff meetings, grade level meetings, School Based Planning meetings and have reviewed it together and developed joint plans across each team.

Check with his staff about the SRI, ISTEP, Dibels, Acuity, and Scrimmages scores. Did you see them? Do you see where my class and my students started from at the start of the year and the progress they've made. He just sent that to us and we're constantly reviewing data and improving our teaching methods. That is a testament to me and my peers for the hard work we're doing daily.

Yes we get tired of the data coming at us, but without it would can't improve. I can tell you this much any teacher who has implemented our plans are seeing results.

Consentrate on your school's data when you see the SRI data that Sally provided and see where we are; then talk! Look how low my class was at the start and look at our grade level results now.

Even in the face of a major move, entirely new teachers in my grade, we're still kicking many other schools. Give us time and the district will take our entire grade level to the worst performing schools. Watch.

  51. I agree with the parent who complained about Mrs. Pole-Dancing-Fowler. She is rude to children, extremely unprofessional, loud, and obnoxious.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Beene only knows the names of fast food restaurants..............she is about 90 yrs. old and she needs to retire!!!! Why in the "Hell" does White keep her on the payroll. She must have some good blackmail info on White, for her to be able to keep her job. She needs to be "FIRED" immediately. She is doing nothing but milking the system. She doesn't even run her building..............her secretary should be getting a principal's salary becasue she is the one running the building for Beene!

  58. "As a young black male teacher in college at U of I Now I see what being gifted, educated, and black will get you...success and haters! You go Frat make yo' haters and make some more GREAT SIGMAS in the process."

This is part of the problem, you don't even know this man but assume because of his race that he is competent and any criticism of him is due to his race. You must be eager to join the black mafia in IPS. The mafias function to benefit their members first. And they are a big part of what is wrong with IPS. It is time we stop looking at race and start looking at skills, ability, and competence. There is no place in IPS for the black mafia, the lesbian mafia, or the good old white boy mafia. It is time for everyone to have there first loyalty become what is in the best interest of kids.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Loyalty in the best interest of the kids is not the case in this situation. This isn't about race, it's about the good boy network again at work. ______ is a closet homo, prideful and full of self. He is obsessed with power. Listen to the comments on this post where people reference his lack of connecting with the kids. He turns on his own staff (for instance his assistant principal) who does all of his work and he is only worried about the vanitites of life. His goal from day one was to come to IPS because of the "upward mobility" factor which he didn't have in the district he came from or else he would've gotten the building (Fishback Academy) that he wanted. Do your research then take up for him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. McDowell should not be a principal- nothing about her is effective or professional.

    ReplyDelete
  61. When will we know which elementary schools will be reconstituted next year? BTW...Melissa Richards not only knows the names & testing info about every one of her students, she genuinely cares about them.

    ReplyDelete
  62. As principals and teachers, we are role models. We need to teach our students the basics of language. It is not hip or cool to write things like: dat for that, em for them, yo for your....holla for holler.....your fraternity founders would roll over in their graves at your bastardization of the English language. I assure you that they all had an excellent command of the language. Oh, I forgot. You are hip and cool.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I have nothing positive to say about you because you are rude. Period. Nobody is out to get you. Smile, it won't kill you.

    ReplyDelete
  64. All I can say is Wow!!! I was considering returning to school to obtain my administration license. After reading all of your comments, both positive and negative, I am slowly changing my mind. My elementary teachers were the ones who inspired me to want to become a teacher because they were nice and caring. While I do understand that there are some places in the workforce that are easier to work in than others, my question to the teachers that are so unhappy with Dr. Hunter and other administrators in IPS(including Dr. White), is why are you still working for such a horrible district?

In college we were taught (at least I was) to evaluate the pros and cons of a position before you accept it (or maybe that was the wisdom of my parents). The problem is most people are not honest in the interviews, in which most cases the principals conduct, and when the principals hold them to what they promised that they would bring to that school, all of the sudden there is a problem and that same principal becomes the most hated person on earth.

I do understand that everyone is entitled to express their opinion, but if there is so much hatred with IPS and what goes on downtown, why would you want to work for a district with horrible teachers and administration? In this economy, there are way too many other people that are more concerned with the education of our children that would love to take your place. By the conversations that go on on this blog, you people really know a lot about the personal lives of a lot of people in this district. If that same amount of time that you spend investigating the people of IPS was spent writing lesson plans, or preparing for the next day or week of class, maybe the children would pass ISTEP and IPS could return the district that it was when I was child.

Come on people, when will we wake up and realize what is really at stake here?...our children.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Question!!!
Has anyone heard that White is being investigated for an ethics violation due to the recent 2 hour delay issues?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I was unaware he possessed any ethics to investigate.

    ReplyDelete
  67. It is so easy for the third poster up to make judgements regarding the lives of IPS teachers without ever being there. We do not teach in one room school houses. It is easy to accept a position in a school because there is a supportive principal only to find him or her gone when you begin. Arlington H.S. alone has had 5 or 6 principals in 2 years. The administrative staff in IPS has been handpicked by Eugene White who hates teachers and has trained his staff to hate us also. It is not difficult to see the indiscretions in the lives of IPS administrators when they carry them out right in front of the staff or when disenchanted administrators spill the beans. Walk a mile in our schools before you start making judgemnts and evaualtions with no ground work. With that kind of attitude, you would make a horrible teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh for the love of Pete. Don't speak for teachers. You make us all sound like idiots. Poster "all I can say is wow" most teachers are not as bitter as the ones who complain on this blog. That's not to say that everyone doesn't have their gripes and grumbles, but I've worked in this district for a long time (because I'm good at what I do, I enjoy it, and my job is powerfully important) and while there are certainly teachers with toxic attitudes, they are definitely the minority. Most teachers are at IPS because they want to be and most of us view central office the way that the majority of America views "corporate" -- irritating and out of touch, but nothing you'd actually invest enough energy to post a blog about! lol So take what you read here with a grain of salt. I don't know what district you work in, but imagine what a blog would look like if a few of the most burned-out, angry, and uninspired teachers got posted their viewpoints online. Would you want the world judging your whole district by those posts? Neither do we, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Who needs to do any "ground work" to make judgements about IPS teachers? All one needs to do is read their comments here. It paints a pretty clear picture.

    ReplyDelete

  71. After reading this as a new Charter School Administrator within your district, I can see why we will continue to receive many of your students. 1. You all are so busy destroying each other you can't focus on instruction. 2. We've recruited several of your best administrators and teachers before and will be glad to get more. 3. The reason we're growing so fast is simply because of the lack of IPS teachers' professionalism and our ability to fire quickly people such as the ones listed on this blog.

I would like to see how long your district can keep their buildings open on the near and far east side after we recruit their students.

We'll take the children, you all can keep your second class teachers.

Finally, I don't care if any of you like this blog or not, the facts speak for themselves. We're coming to put you out of business and to give the students a true chance at receiving a quality education. The type you all couldn't give them due to your ignorance, rudeness to each other and their parents, and your total lack of any form of committment.

I'll keep a watch out and lets see what your ADM count looks like in the Fall. We're here now!!

  72. This post is not to offend any non-Christians. But, after reading this...I know that most of you on here may subcribe to some form of faith in God or Christ.

If He was to read these aweful remarks that many of you have stated about these people (who I don't know but will sincerely pray for), how would Christ or God feel about you and His relationship with you.

Many people wanted to stone the woman at the well becasue of her sexual behavior. But He saied to them: "He without sin cast your stones". All of them looked at themselves and laid down their stones.

Here is an honest question: What aweful things have happened in our own lives to place us in the seat of judgement? Who made us the judge of what is and is not God's appointed teachers, parents, civic leaders, or superintendents regardless of our agreement with them or not.

Is this the faith we're subscribing to? One in which we can speak so negatively of others without first looking into the perfect law of justice.

This blog has attempted to slaughter several people who have actually done nothing wrong, hurt no one, yet walked into a world of unknown enemies (so it appears).

As a Christian teacher who actually attempts to live out the creeds of someone higher than I, I find myself not having room to talk against no one until my life and walk is where it needs to be.

Maybe you've been hurt, passed over for a promotion, treated wrongly by a parent, peer, or principal. Christ is the only one who vindicates us.

Are we in such an aweful place now as teachers that we've turned on the one profession that still has the keys to change lives?

I for one will monitor myself, look at myself, check myself, improve myself, and challenge myself to never speak against any parent, child, fellow teacher, or my leaders unless I'm ready for Christ to speak agains me.

How about you? Are you in a perfect place in life emotionally, spiritually, financially, or in your relationships with your family, friends, neighbors, and peers that you can now pass judgement on others? I think not.

Lets work on ourselves and write things on this blog that are encouraging and supportive and not evil or mis-guided.

Here is an idea: Why don't we begin sending letters of encouragment to those we think need it. Letters to parents who may be struggling, fellow teachers who may have a hard class, principals who are overwhelmed, superintendents who have major community battles to fight.

Do you all think that a little encouragment and sincere prayer for them would go further in aiding them, then attempting to destroy their character?

I may be alone on this; but, I will begin on Tuesday. If you get a card or note with a simple note of encouragement don't thank the person sending it, pay it forward to someone you're struggling to like.

We will be the change we want to see in our community. The change starts with me!

  73. To the person posting a few posts up....why do we continue to teach in such a horrible district? For me, 1) for the kids and 2) I have a masters and 10 years of teaching experience, no other districts would hire me (too expensive) unless I take a pay cut (which I can't afford).

To the Charter school admin. a few posts up. Yeah, let's look at ADM.....we'll see it be down and then as soon as you get the money for OUR students you'll kick them out and send them back to us. Happens every year! And, I don't know which charter you're from, but EVERY single kid I've ever gotten from a charter has been WAY behind where my students are.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Good luck with your charter school. I hope you're one of the good ones. The good ones give kids what they need and give IPS the kick they need. The bad ones, of course, hurt kids. I'm actually very much a fan of school choice. But many still choose IPS. IPS magnet schools are full of families who have found better programs in IPS than they can find in private or charter schools.

  75. Justin Hunter has two full-time jobs. He's the principal of school 15 and also the head pastor of a church, One Vision in Christ. See below.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Our Senior Pastor
    "The Servant Leader"
It is Dr. Justin Hunter’s most humble pleasure to welcome you to One Vision. One Vision is a place where ordinary people are free to worship God in Spirit and in Truth without economic, educational, social, or political confrontation.

It is a joy for Him to come to this awesome place of worship, to lead by serving, and to see the wonderful healing power of God’s hand in the lives of Christians in the areas of finance, relationships, and most importantly their personal spiritual growth. It is Dr. Hunter’s passion to serve a church that will look like Heaven.

Therefore, Dr. Hunter is utterly committed to following God’s call in establishing a multicultural church that is centered on the teachings and principles of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Hunter is a native of Northwest Indiana and the great Trinity Baptist Church. He is blessed of God to have been given the hand of his best friend and life partner the Mrs. Jamila F. Holcomb-Hunter his high school and college sweetheart to marry.

Following God’s call on Pastor and Mrs. Hunter’s lives, Pastor Hunter enrolled at The University of Southern Indiana where he would receive a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.

In God’s Divine order, it would be at the University of Southern Indiana that Dr. Hunter would receive and accept his calling into the Gospel Ministry.

Following his tenure at the University of Southern Indiana, Dr. Hunter enrolled at Indiana Wesleyan University where he would be called upon to complete a Master of Education degree. Following Indiana Wesleyan University, Dr. Hunter would complete a Doctorate of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University in June of 2004.

Pastor Hunter is a deeply devoted individual with a special calling to assist the “least among us”.

Dr. Hunter is the founding pastor of One Vision and has seen God’s wonderful hand inspire, lead, and grow One Vision from such humble beginnings.

Under Dr. Hunter’s leadership and his obedience to Christ, One Vision’s ministerial staff has grown, the church has acquired a new building, grown multi-culturally, spiritually, established nursing home, prison, singles, food bank, and children’s ministries in order to advance the Kingdom of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Dr. and First Lady Hunter are the proud parents of four children: J. Howard, Jr., Iyanla, Isaiah, and Jonathan.

  76. 1] Why is House not mentioned in the bio of Dr. Hunter?

2] To the charter schoool administrator....I can predict your actions as you do the same thing every year....you enroll our students and keep them until ADM and the money is allocated and then if they have special needs, are unmotivated, have behavior problems, poor attendance or can't afford all of the extras that you expect your students to purchase then you send them back to IPS. Special Education students are expensive and they are first that you dump from your so called schools. Your schools are nothing but scams ripping off the taxpayers of IPS. I think if you accept a student in the beginning of school then you should be required to keep him or her all year ...just like IPS is required....we truly have open doors.

    ReplyDelete
  77. LOL, the accusation above is silly and, of course, false. I've subbed in charter schools and IPS and I can assure you, there is no sudden population change in ANY charter school after ADM. I'm sure there are a few people each year who start out in charter schools, do not like them, and switch back to IPS, but in my experience, charter school enrollment is MORE stable than IPS because IPS has so many families who constantly move. While it is true that charter schools do not usually have enough special education students to have special programs, the picture you are painting of "dumping" students is completely false. And there are several charter schools with students that have been kicked out of IPS schools and the parents have put them in charters rather than alternative schools. The best and the worst schools in center township are charter schools, so you can't lump them all together. The good ones do better than IPS magnets, and IPS magnets can pick and choose and charter schools can't. I think charter schools have their pros and cons (just like district schools and private schools have their pros and cons), and it makes you look terribly insecure and threatened to throw out false accusations. If charter schools reach children that IPS couldn't, that's a GOOD thing.

  78. Kamona McDowell should never have been given the position of an administrator. She is ruthless, bullying, and mean. Unless you kiss her rear-end, she will make your life miserable. She knows nothing about what goes on in the classroom, but she is the first to tell you how bad you are. She bullies her staff so that they will not stand up to her. She has lost many good teachers, and will continue to lose them unless she is let go.

  79. How is it possible for Dr. Hunter to do justice to two full time jobs -- pastoring a growing church AND leading a school as its principal?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Why do you think his vice is so busy and he has his GF HOUSE!running the show.

    ReplyDelete
  81. This is really low! First you attack his school, his degrees, his family, and now the man's church! Is there anything so low!

What does his church have to do with you.

I'm a Hispanic and I know enough about their culture to know that you don't touch their churches nor their community leaders. Is there anything beneath you people?

Check America's history on the attack against their churches and pastors and the results of it.

Have you visited his church, seen the people, talk with them or are you simply out to continue this destruction of character?

Do you know the countless number of African American school teachers or employees in IPS and other districts who serve as deacons, pastors, trustees, etc?

People, it is one thing to say how you don't like the man, how he is this or that...fine.

Is there any areas of a person's life that is off limits? Unless the man is coming into his school preaching, giving out Bibles, taking names to grow his church; leave that out of it.

If you really want to isolate a race of people, talk against their churches or leaders. Regardless if you like them or not professionally...their private affairs outside of their work day is totally off limits.

Maybe some of you need to go to church sometimes, work in the church, or do mission work full time while working a job before we talk on such issues.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I agree with the post above...this is totally out of line!

This is AWEFUL! I'm ashamed to be called an educator.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Gee, calm down. There is nothing written bad about this gentleman's church or his faith.

  85. Simply Shameful...

Poster you should pray that God doesn't allow your life to be exposed or ruined. Have you ever heard that you don't touch certain things!

You're sick and I'm truley sad for you :-(

    ReplyDelete
  86. No one is attacking his second profession or church. Pastoring a church is a calling, not a job you do on the side. Work one day under this man and you will see why we feel the way we do. I guarantee you will find another profession or leave quickly. I didnt know what I was walking into to. We should be happy he is going elsewhere. Perhaps the school will get a real school leader and he can move on to torture principals and their staff as a director.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I agree with the poster who was very upset earlier...you don't ever mentioned his church in the same line as an alleged affair!

You've posted his entire bio with the man's wife listed and the names of his children. It was not listed on here to encourage him but to have futher attacks on his character...you're the scum of the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Above poster...if you don't like him, you can leave.

I teach in the building also and I'm totally offended by the attacks I've seen against him and now his church.

Why would any person who is in our building be so low as to agree that even mentioning the name of his church to continue the attacks is valid?

Has he pushed that on you? Did you give you a "Cross" or something?

I would love for any of my unhappy peers to just leave or take your problems to him. Why would you put all of your issues about your school on this blog? This blog can't solve anything.

I'm with the poster above again...why the church bio that has his whole life story on there. You people are really pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  89. To the poster above...Last time I checked in their community most of their pastors have always had to work and pastor. They've had to serve people who could not traditionally afford to pay a full time salary.

Do your research on the African American Church, their history in this country, the struggles of their people before you open your unGodly mouth.

Last time I check, there is no such thing as a part time deacon, trustee, steward,or pastor.

Again, you're showing your ignorance. You're speaking on a topic in which you are NOT qualified to speak.

I agree with the other poster as well...some of you are scum.

  90. I agree that was really not necessary! To the teacher who teaches for him...if you think he is bad, go work for McDowell.

  93. Too many of us have seen the flood of new students into IPS schools right after ADM. The horror tales the tell about charter schools are unbelievable. They have been ignored and nothing has been attempted to deal with their disabilities or deficits. This is not a one year happening or a handful of students. For you to deny that this happens just further erodes any credibility that you have in the educational community.

  94. Maybe it's time for Indiana to fund public schools using ADA (Average Daily Attendance) rather than ADM (Average Daily Membership).

  95. This is has. Hunter is sad and the way folks are reacting is side. What attacks are on here still don't relieve him of abusing his power in the pulpit and in the schools. One evil doesn't beget another. The best thing to do is to pray for this sick man, and his wife that has be married to him. While the staff sees him (I've seen him) commit ________on a regular, and curse out staff, disrespect them, tell them "shut up" and other profane things, and then sit in his office and read the Word. Maybe those out there dont know the drama he opens up to the staff? I can see both sides, but maybe its time to leave him alone because he has something bigger coming from above. You should never play with the pulpit and ultimately, anything said on here is just frustration from man. He's got something bigger coming from above.

  103. Posters who believe that the bulk of IPS teachers are either incompetent of mean spirited are simply wrong.

The schools must have more local control. Control by the teachers, parents and staff with less interference by the folks downtown. The expenditures that IPS makes, the entire budgetary process must be open to public review.

These measures will call for a dramtic shift in power and attitiudes by the Board. It is well past time for such a shift.

  104. I don't know who you are Roy, but this is certainly refreshing, and makes perfect sense. There is far to much top down management with no buy in from teachers or administration on the building level. We are wasting so much time and money on things that don't work or don't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  105. First, to the poster who wanted names of charter schools who dumped problem students on IPS in order to attempt to keep their stats..the answer is : All of them

Secondly, Justin Hunter just went on a rant with his teachers threatening them if they continued to be absent as much as they are. We all know that when there is trusting and supporting leadership in a building that teacher morale and attendance skyrockets.
Thus, Hunter has admitted with his own threats and rants that there is a problem in his building. It might help if he make House do her job once in a while.

I don't know who you are responding to. I have not read all these comments because it seems to went off into a direction I don't want to participate in. I do want to offer my insight on this comment though.

Since the end of the year. I have had seven students from Fountain Square, Six from Fall Creek, two from Irvington, and one from the one run by goodwill (or someone like that on the westside).

All have learning disabilities that parents have told me the other schools were doing nothing. Or only having a person come by once a week between other charter schools. No daily monitoring or help going on.

I teach at a HS (Only) that narrows it down to three schools for you if you want to know. If this sampling of those coming into my regular ed room (with a inclusion teacher assigned) is any indication of charter performance. Then it is horrid when it comes to LD kids from where I stand. We are spending a ton of time with them making up what they should ALREADY know but were denied or overlooked at their previous locations (charter schools).

I am trying out my cell phone connection. Sorry about any spelling or gram errors. (I cannot get the other lines to come up and check.)

  108. If you are telling the truth, you should give the information to the Indianapolis Star. I have a feeling you're not and you won't.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Wrong!

When ever they have talked about charter schools or commented on poor performance of IPS. I have sent it (information) to Tully, Gammil, and other reporters.

No I don't list names (of students) for privacy reasons. I do list my school for them (with a request not be named because of administrative warning about grumblings).

They have just chosen not to write about it. I am sure other teachers in IPS have had the same experience. Probably someone you were commenting to earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  110. You have to give them names or they can't verify if it's true. Otherwise, anybody could make up anything about anyone and send it to the Star. (Breaking news! We have unconfirmed reports from an unnamed source with an unproven connection to IPS reports that unnamed students with unnamed disabilities are being sent back to IPS from several charter schools!!) If it was true, I can't imagine why IPS wouldn't be contacting the press themselves. But if you ARE telling the truth, maybe try to convince IPS to do something or urge the parents to contact the press. Because it's pretty significant if it's true. But without facts, it just sounds like gossip from someone threatened by school choice.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I've heard that the Star reporters won't use information they are given unless they get the name of the person sending it. Too many teachers fear repercussions if they tell the truth about IPS. I wouldn't trust any of those reporters with my name.

I made a copy for my personal file but I cannot reveal the student's name without his/her permission. Guess what??? The student has poor attendance here also. The difference is that IPS has to keep this student enrolled and take the hit on attendance rate and test scores if that student is here to take the test. The charter school has raised the scores for that school by dumping another at risk student on IPS.

  119. Maybe fewer children passed the Spring ISTEP because it was a TOTALLY different test. And if anyone thinks that a miracle can be accomplished in one or two years is mistaken! Also, I've worked for 11 principals in my career. Some I've respected and some I haven't. I might not resect my principal, but that doesn't stop me from being the best teacher that I can be. I love my job and my students. Nothing will change that. We have wonderful teachers at 15 that do their jobs no matter what!

  122. In the medical professions, patients are occasionally 'fired'. Yes, that is the term used by physicians and dentists.

If a patient does not follow the treatment plan set forth by the medical professional, then the physician or the dentist may 'fire' that patient providing they give the patient the names of two or more health care providers who might be taking new patients.

For example, a patient is diabetic and does not follow the diet plan, the exercise plan, and the suggested weight maintenance plan set forth by the physician, then the physician can tell the patient they are 'fired'. If a dentist lays out a treatment plan for little Mary that states she must reduce her sugar intake from cakes and sugary drinks and must brush her teeth twice daily, and little Mary's parents do not enforce that treatment plan, then the dentist can 'fire' little Mary as a patient because she poses a high threat for charging the dentist with bad dentistry. Just imagine how public school teachers could show achievement levels increasing if we could 'fire' parents/students who did not provide their children with the prescribed school plan for doing homework, attending on a regular basis, abiding by school rules, and getting enough sleep to be ready to stay awake in class.

In our society filled with litigation over everything under the sun, it's only a matter of time until teachers are sued for educational malpractice even if the parents do not provide the environment requisite for their child's school achievement or if the parents do not follow the school's recommendations for their particular student. Medical professionals can 'fire' patients who pose a decided risk for malpractice suits; however, we teachers cannot do that.

    ReplyDelete
  123. ...or perhaps a charter school could be sued..

    ReplyDelete
  124. Or, maybe not. If the charter school has sustaining criteria, like a magnet school, then they're within their rights to invite a student to leave. Don't know. . .

    ReplyDelete
  125. On a closing note, it's always prudent to establish a paper trail and document everything offered to a student to assist in their being successful. Also, document every attempt made with working with parents to help their child succeed. You're up the creek, without records and documentation, if a parent claims you did not offer all available resources to their child when the student fails your class or is retained because of failing grades. Just don't get caught without documentation.

    ReplyDelete
  126. The Shortridge Law and Government Magnet Community School removed several students at semester break and ordered them back to their boundard school. One other long time high school magnet not only screens their students but also removes students when it appears that they may cause their stats to be damaged.

  127. We are still getting charter school kids nine days before ISTEP. That's fine but when the parents complain to us about what went on at the charter school, discipline problems, a revolving door of educators, no homework assignments and even no gym classes or recess, we tell them to go to the media with their experiences. I could care less when we get MORE kids but I am worried about the kids I know who have already been in four schools just this year. Where do their test scores go? I've been told that with Soup Nazi Bennett they no longer have to be at your school 180 days. Every school will get flagged. If you have a lot of mobility in your area it's only a matter of time when the state takes over. You can't get 100% of kids to pass, even in Carmel. Who voted for these people??? I didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Charter schools have not been open long enough for a 9th grader to have received all of his/ her education there. So, the failing high schoolers mentioned above started out in an IPS school and began failing there. Their parents moved them to charter schools, where they did not catch up. Then their parents moved them back to an IPS school. All this moving around is bad for regular students; it must be very, very damaging for students with special needs.

    ReplyDelete
  129. " Then their parents moved them back to an IPS school. All this moving around is bad for regular students; it must be very, very damaging for students with special needs."

You hit on something interesting here...we spend tons of money trying to remediate kids who are moving all over the place and may attend four to six schools in a year. Why not just keep them at the same school (and provide transportation) and only let them change schools at the beginning of the year and the semester break.
If their families can't provide stability maybe the system could.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Why do these families move so frequently?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Their families aren't necessarily moving, they are moving them between schools.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Why do they move? Here's a scenario. Mom gets laid off and has to move back in with Grandma. Grandma is tough to live with, so when Mom gets serious with a new BF who has his own place, she moves the family in with him. That doesn't work, so she moves back in with Grandma. She finally gets another job, but it takes 2 hours on three buses to get there. Cousin has an apartment closer to the new job, so she moves in with cousin. That works out pretty well for several months, but then cousin has a new BF that is mean to the kids. By now she's gotten two raises and can afford her own apartment, still close to work, but in a different school district. Then with flu season and all the winter holidays off school, she misses too much work and loses her job. Back to Grandmas. (There are also variations of this scenario with drugs and jail time, CPS and foster care, crazy "visitation" settlements between mom and dad, etc.)

  133. It is obvious that some here don't understand or refuse to admit that charter schools cherry pick their students and dump those that they worry will smudge their stats. It has been stated over and over in this blog topic and others for the last several months that this happens on a regular basis. IPS schools and staff know where their newly enrolled students are coming from as they arrive with school records. The really interesting aspect to this whole charade are the comments made by parents. A Third grader who has had 3 teachers quit in a semester. The constant lack of even basic materials and the non stop request for parents to buy materials The charter schools don't even apologize for failing to provide special education instruction as required by law. Their response is to send them to IPS.

  134. It doesn't happen on a regular basis. That's why people don't take your posts seriously. Proving that it happens could shut down charter schools, so there is a lot of motivation for IPS to prove that charters are doing it. They can't because they're not. On the contrary, magnet schools can cherry pick. And several charter schools serve as "alternative" schools for students who weren't being served in IPS. I choose to teach in IPS, and I choose an IPS magnet for my child. But I am not so insecure that I need to bash charter schools. 100% of the kids in charter schools have parents who are not happy with their boundary school. We either need to listen more to parents' concerns, or we need to make our peace with charter schools. The state doesn't "owe" us other people's kids against their will.

  135. I don't disagree that some charters don't have very good resources for special ed. But that's not the same as "cherrypicking." IPS boundary schools don't have very good resources for kids who begin elementary at or above grade level; that's why I put them in a magnet school (which DOES cherrypick. Legally.)

  136. Can someone tell me where the IPS District Five boundaries are?? Is there any new candidates?

  137. "It doesn't happen on a regular basis."
    ---------------------

It happens all of the time. It's just difficult to prove. Actually, it's a key component of the charter school modus operandi.

Cherry picking by the charters is common knowledge.

  138. Why would it be difficult to prove? Either students are chosen by lottery or they are not? Either charter schools are kicking out students or they are not. The idea that this could be "common knowledge" and "modus operandi" and yet not provable is idiotic. I actually would not have any problem at all if charter schools WERE allowed to choose/limit students like a magnet school. But they do not. And it would be EASY to prove if they did.

    Nah! Wrong you are.

  140. Quoting from above:

"If their families can't provide stability maybe the system could." ------------------------------------------------

If it were possible for "the system" to effectively provide this or anything else that many of these unfortunate children do not get properly provided for them in the home, IPS would be an awesome, high performing district. Providing things that a school system should never be required to provide is exactly what IPS as well as many other urban school systems have been attempting to do for decades. IPS provides more meals, counseling, clothing, summer school, as well as any number of programs for various purposes than nearly any other district in the state. If providing more for the students were the secret, IPS would already be a top performer. The old saying would seem to apply here, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". All of these extra things the system tries to provide (many of which are mandated by law) are a big part of why IPS has such a higher cost per student when compared to other districts.

I am not stating this to try to discourage the system or anyone that is a part of it from trying. I simply believe that focusing so many resources on those that are "unwilling to drink" places an unfair disadvantage on those that are, therefore pulling them down. If more resources were focused on the basics such as providing more funding that goes directly to the classroom, the overwhelming increase in the success of those "willing to drink" would do more to lift up the rest than any program ever could. It is difficult to accept that there will always be those that refuse to "drink" what the system has to offer no matter how much is offered to them. As long as the same opportunities have been provided to all, the system can never truly be considered a failure.

I fully realize that what I have said here is much more easily said than done. However, the system did not get to this point overnight. It won't change overnight either.

  141. This is much more of a problem in elementary school then in high schools. I don't think that little kids are "unwilling to drink". This is a case of the sins of the parents being visited on the children. Certainly the "system" can help these kids by giving them the drink, even if their parents don't. In reality parents generally want what is best for their kids but when facing economic and social problems that boggle their minds they do what is necessary even if it is not in their kids best interest.

  142. Great insights. I also think if the system did more for the elementary kids, fewer of them would "refuse to drink" when they get older. They don't refuse because they're bad or stupid. They refuse because they lose faith that school has anything to offer them.

  143. 16 posts above..."I could care less when we get MORE kids..." You mean you COULDN'T care less... If you could care less, then you do care some....
Common error...just a pet peeve of mine...

  145. Give it a break.

Dr. White, no matter the conditions will not call off school or delay. Not since he was reprimanded by Tony Bennett.

We will be in school. Even if we had a blizzard I doubt now he would call off now.

It is all about a P***ing contest with the Superintendent of Public Instruction now. It does not now matter about employees or pupils who are put in jeopardy. It is about Dr. White going to show Mr. Bennett!

That is why we did not get out last week. This storm is less. So, just dig out and get ready to go in. Leave early and drive safely on Tuesday morning. School will be in session.
