IPS Needs Help

A lot of you have been writing in telling about the upcoming teacher shortage in IPS. Maybe the news media will pick up on it. Here are some of the reasons we think no one wants to come work at IPS?

  1. IPS Substitute teachers are getting a 57% pay cut, even though there is a shortage averaging 20-50 per day.
  2. IPS is offering a $5,000 bonus if anyone will teach at John Marhsall for two years and no one is taking them up on the offer.
  3. IPS is firing teachers, but has positions open for "media specialists."
  4. We still don't have a contract and Eugene got a $17,000 bonus, but we did most of the work.
You can add some more reasons if you like, maybe by then the District office will figure out why no one wants to come work here and we have more than 100 vacancies, but laying off 300 teachers.

Why is the story avoiding telling the public about all of this. I thought the bonus was 12K???

Teachers must continue telling whats going on...

  2. Dr. White's bonus was $17,000. The original figure of $12K reported by The Star was incorrect. The Star amended its story and included the correct bonus of $17K. The School Board must have its head buried in the sand at this point. Not only has Dr. White not done a bonus-worthy job; moreover, awarding him a hefty bonus during tight economic times simply was a poorly thought out PR move. There are too many folks in Indy with NO jobs; yet, IPS continues to beg for money and gives the appearance of throwing it away on bonuses and nonessentials.

Kids do not come first in IPS; Ed Center administrators come first.

If teachers are posting the info on this blog, it's no wonder IPS is considered in sad shape. I presume you think media specialists work with the news media. They don't. They work in the school media center. By the way, the school media center is not a place for the media to gather at your school.

I was shocked with the Board's action on Dr. White and just wait until next year when IPS is short $20 million dollars, RIF. The Board has no idea how to run a school system or even balance the books. Students do not come first in IPS, only administrators. I am surprised that Dr. White does have a teacher to run his personal errands.

Today's Indy Star stated there are still 100 teaching vacancies remaining to be filled for the upcoming school year.

If qualified applicants are not eager to work within IPS, it could be they've heard the true stories about the disorganization of its affairs, the poor communication between Ed Center administrators and building administrators, and the poor communication between Ed Center administrators and the teachers.

For example, yesterday I received an email informing me of an 'important' training next week conducted by a Math Supervisor; however, I'm already signed up for another 'important' training on the same day conducted by a Language Arts Supervisor. There is NO organization or coordination at all. There is NO master schedule for summer trainings. Everybody just runs his own little show without coordinating their efforts. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. What happened to the IPS Culture Imperatives...especially the one about 'clear and concise communication'?

Same thing with the RIF teachers, we are told to take certain jobs or we will be removed from the "Recall List". Positions that we are not licensed to teach? IPS is on a downward spiral to a nasty death under Dr. White.

Beware of the $5,000 bonus! Eugene White promised the Over/Under teachers a $1,000 bonus (we filled out paperwork) and we have not been paid. No one in the Ed Center seems to know anything about it.

Where is our money Dr. White?

It's amazing how some of the teachers that are trying to destroy the image of Mr. Yarrell are the same teachers that had the most trouble with students, teaching, attendance, etc. Hum? Sour grapes?

No trouble here with ATTENDANCE,TEACHING OR STUDENTS. The truth does not hurt me but it certainly does hurt those that are hiding from it . Take a look at the statistics they do not lie . Walk through the building . Find a place and sit for a while - observe, open your ears and listen , get your head out of the ground it will come to you . The truth shall set you free!

A good media specialist is vital to your school. They teach students how to do research and assist the students during the research process, give book talks, pull and organize materials for teacher use, head up reading programs, teach students and staff how to use new technology, read reviews and purchase the latest, best books for students, provide a safe and welcoming environment for students before, during, and after school, purchase and manage equipment, at the elementary level media specialist manage all text books too. The list could go on..... The media specialist at my school rocks!!!!
