What's Going On?

Today is an open post. Write about the most egregious thing the Central Office did at your school this year. There's no word limit.

Beware of the $5,000 bonus! Eugene White promised the Over/Under teachers a $1,000 bonus (we filled out paperwork) and we have not been paid. No one in the Ed Center seems to know anything about it.

Where is our money Dr. White?

Talk about Central Office stupid meddling: I think having veteran teachers reapply for their jobs is ridiculous! It is insulting and degrading and reminds me of the movie " Mommie Dearest." Joan Crwaford went nuts when Louie B. Mayer had her--JOAN CRAWFORD--a Hollywood legend with an Academy Award, audition for a part. IPS teachers are truly the worst treated teachers in the state!

Eugene White called at the last minute and demanded that the students be herded into the auditorium so that he could pontificate to them. He wanted them separated by sex which meant that teachers could not accompany the students for crowd control since one sex would be in class while the other sex was listening to White's degrading remarks. No wonder one session at our school had to be dismissed early as it become out of control and disorderly in reaction to some of White's demeaning remarks to students. Of course, this is the same way that he treats and talks to teachers.

Eugene White ruining graduation by challenging people to act like fools, "my mama had me when she was 17 and she knew how to act...what is the matter with you fools" after throwing down the gauntlet, he them stopped the proceedings to issue another lecture.

Insulting parents is not a way to gain their trust and cooperation.

Also one of the speakers was quite nasty about teen mothers, we do everything humanly possible (heck we pray too) to get these girls to graduate only to have them insulted at graduation, someone needs to remind guest speakers of this fact.

On the bonus money contact the Union (IEA) they will get you the bonus, and under certain guideline can get double the amount due to neglect from the Education Center.

The hastily thrown together Over/Under Program that was established in the Community High Schools was an egregious affront to the building administrators and to the O/U teachers. I'm unsure whose brainchild the O/U Program is. Anyone know?

Teachers were enticed to join the ranks of the Over/Under Program; they were promised extra small class sizes, an Instructional Assistant per classroom, and even some extra money. None of the promises materialized.

The O/U Program had no curriculum, no body of guidelines, no oversight from the Central Office, and no success either.

A retired IPS principal worked at one of the community high schools and was appalled at the Over/Under Program's problems. She ran into Mary Busch one evening at a downtown event and told Busch about the problems. Busch expressed surprise because she'd heard the O/U Program was very successful.

Eugene White ruining graduation by challenging people to act like fools,

Regarding the above post:I agree 100% with Dr. White trying to make parents act respectful at graduation. You can not hear when your child's name is called for others acting like idiots!!! When my nephew graduated from Pike High School five years ago, the superintendent threatened to stop the graduation if the noise did not stop. As it was, the family behind us never heard their son's name called and missed getting a milestone picture.

On a Friday back in January or February of 2009, a first year teacher in the O/U Program left school at the end of the day. At that time, she had 14 students enrolled in her 6th grade O/U class; she'd finally gotten the class under control and they were beginning to make some academic progress.

On the following Monday, she returned to school only to find that she no longer had those 14 students in her class. She had 36 girls in her class!

No building administrator had bothered enough to even tell this young teacher what was planned. Mrs. Barlowe, the building AP, had changed the schedule over the weekend, and she did NOT tell the teacher in advance.

The teacher, of course, did not have enough materials to even deliver her instruction as contained in her lesson plans for the week.

Needless to say, after a few weeks, this young first year teacher resigned from her position. I'm so sorry for this young woman and for the bad taste for education she developed as a result of arbitrary, unprofessional, and incompetent administrative decisions.

Because of this change in student schedules over the weekend, the O/U teachers could not take daily attendance the remainder of the school year. They could not even record grades on eSchool because the schedules were not accurate. The Guidance Counselor had to record grades for the O/U students the rest of the year.

A group of teachers at Tech could not get their campus administrator to complete the paperwork so that they could get paid for work they had completed. After an excessive amount of time, the teachers went to the union and were not only paid in a timely manner but were paid double. Many teachers have given up on the exta work as it is so difficult to get paid in a reasonable amount of time.

Barlow must have something against 1st year teachers. There was another 1st year teacher at her school who she treated really mean.

This teacher was having a small pizza party in her classroom "after school" to reward a few kids for something special. The teacher ordered the pizzas and paid for them with her own money.

Barlow came down the hall and came into the classroom while this "after school" pizza party was going on. Barlow grabbed the pizzas and THREW them into the trash can!

Now that's just wrong! That was nothing but meanness. She threw away pizzas that had been bought and paid for by the teacher. This party was NOT going on during school hours. It was after school. That was just wrong, wrong, wrong.

The 1st year teacher did not know what to do. She was afraid to report it. She did not know who to tell.

OK folks, open that check stub and check your hourly rate, you've all gotten a pay cut.
My check says I am being paid for 70 hours, 10 seven hour days. This is WRONG. each paycheck represents 7.3 days of pay, or 51.1 hours, this shows up in your hourly rate, mine dropped from $48 per hour to $30.53. And since there are things we are paid for at hourly rate this deception will cost you money. Suddenly it appears that IPS is giving you 19.9 hours of paid vacation per pay period. This is not right, and you will be cheated.

I have wanted to vent my frustration regarding the situation at Northwest High School for a long time. When Roy Simpson was replaced by Lawrence Yarrell many teachers , for a brief time, thought the situation within the school would improve. Little did we know that we were going literally from the frying pan into the fire of inept , bullying administration. Lawrence Yarrell, Dr. White's handpicked man , bullies students and teachers alike. Mr. Yarrell thinks nothing of strolling into a classroom and announcing to the students , while the class is in seeion, that the teacher ( present in the room ) is inept and ineffective. After destroying the classroom activity and the control of the classroom - he simply strolls out , dispersing insulting glares and comments as he goes. When this behavior , along with many other examples of ineptitude and bullying were brought to the attention of the union and individuals downtown the response was ......nothing . The rampage continues unchecked on a daily basis.

Teachers are berated on a daily basis, are told that they are ineffective and are ridiculed via public insults and e - mail asaults.

Many teachers would support those that are being assaulted by Mr. Yarrell , but they fear for their jobs, they have seen that Mr. Yarrell will stop at nothing , that he will lie, harrass, scream, humiliate and yes even eliminate teachers that he finds "disagreeable.

Students are also , on a daily basis screamed at , both in the hallway and over the PA. Insults and threats reign supreme.

I'll be glad to comment on Lawrence Yarrell at Northwest High School... He spends his time yelling at students AND teachers over the PA system. I can't begin to count the number of times we heard him yell at the stuents about dress code and being in class on time. Here's a thought... how about following through on the threats you make to the kids, Mr. Yarrell? Go ahead and suspend them when they aren't in class.... go ahead and put them out for not being in dress code. It does no good to yell about it on the PA and then not follow through. A couple of weeks of hall sweeps EVERY PERIOD and dress code checks EVERY PERIOD would send the message that we mean business.... but when you only enforce these things for a couple days, then ignore it for several weeks until you get a direective from downtown to improve it, and THEN try and enforce it again, you are not going to make any lasting progress on those matters.

He also, when he decides he doesn't like something a teacher is doing in his/her classroom, harasses that teacher continually, saying "I just want you to improve" while at the same time not giving any type of support on helping that teacher imrove whatever it is that HE feels is wrong. Also, he decides what he wants as an outcome, and regardless of whether the teacher does or does not improve whatever he has singled out, he goes ahead with whatever he wants to do anyway.

In short, he has "little man syndrome"..... I was told by someone who would know that he was called "Little Napoleon" when he was employed in the Pike School District. I hope that the downtown administration will see that he has totally demoralized the staff at Northwest... there are many of us who are desperately looking for positions at other schools so that we don't have to return to Northwest and work another year for this man who has NO idea on how to manage a staff and NO business being a building principal.

    Re: Larry Yarrell

I don't know if Yarrell was fired by Pike or not; however, I do know that he personally and to my face laughed about sending a sped teacher on a PIP from his school to mine. He told me to "consider it an early Christmas present."

Yarrell himself put this sped teacher on a PIP, but he violated IPS policy by shuffling him off to another school. Then, he had balls enough to laugh about it to my face. What a jerk!

Also, my position required that I be at Northwest one day per month for a meeting. Yes, I remember distinctly that Yarrell spent an extraordinary amount of time on the PA yelling directives to students to 'go to class', 'clear the halls', 'I'm gonna suspend anybody caught in the halls', etc. I suspected then that he was 'all talk and no action'. His PA announcements were not essential and seemed to be more for the benefit of the adults in the building than for the kids.

I usually term these physically short men as suffering from the George Jefferson syndrome.

He's just another cocky little IPS bush league administrator who could never be hired in a successful school corporation. He's gonna be with us until he retires because he's risen as high as he can on the educational ladder.

Most-not all- IPS principals are demeaning and condescending to their teachers. Before I was a teacher in IPS, I was a student in IPS and I never remember one former principal treating a teacher disrespectfully in front of students. Evidently, they are taking their example from Dr. White.

At every administrative council meeting the attitude is that is them vs us. The script is administrators want well run schools, quality instruction, and students to succeed. The teachers are cast in the role of villians, who our thwarting our goals.

This is a top down attitude, and is counterproductive to real student success.

    ReplyDelete
  26. AnonymousJuly 18, 2009

    Top down indeed!
And the people at the "top" who are driving the instructional bus haven't been teachers for many years - if ever. You can't have people who don't know what they're doing telling you what to do every day and expect success.

    Regarding Anonymous 5:44a.m.:

They encourage administrators to ride teachers backs! They have what I like to call a 'brainwash' technique. Anyone with any integrity at all doesn't want to be a principal in IPS.

    ReplyDelete
  29. AnonymousJuly 18, 2009

The problem is many administrators have a fundamental lack of knowledge about the structure of a good school. They want to homogenize the faculty into their ideal image of teachers. They have forgotten that students have different preferences in learning and interaction styles and a variety of approaches is needed to reach each student. What works well for one may not work as well for another. However they need to experience the full range of teaching methods and approaches as this is what they will discover in the real world.

I find this blog to be great. My only problem is why are we only using this blog? They could care less downtown if we are sharing info on a blog. We need to get police and the media involved. I would think between all of the teachers we could have enough evidence to make some positive change in IPS. I love my students and they are in IPS. I know we need to get paid, we have families and bills, but if we don't stand up and be vocal in the media with evidence, what are we doing?

How do you spell VINDICTIVE and REVENGE? There is so much inbreeding and so many secret relationships with in IPS administration who knows what will happen to you if you blow a whistle. Bridgewater lives with another IPS administrator, and so does Bogard, and there are lots of rumors about others. Cross one of them and another will pop up and try to hurt you. It is so sad it is about politics instead of what is in the best interest of students.

If we all come together then they can't hurt us. If we are smart, put our evidence out there with the media and police and it is legitimate then we will be doing what's best. Why just complain? Nothing gets done if we don't do what is right. I personally will be the scapegoat if it means a better future for our students.

  37. It is very easy to criticize a principal such as Larry Yarrell that dares to get rid of teachers that care nothing about kids. Mr. Yarrell has instituted a variety of positive programs and is an advocate for good instruction as well as students respecting teachers.

Mr. White, Mr. Yarrell telephoned you to alert you that due to the transition from small schools to traditional schools, teachers were allowed to transfer. He was kind enough to let you know that you were receiving a teacher on a Performance Improvement Plan so that you could follow through.

Mr. Yarrell has changed Northwest High School to a place where students, teachers and parents feel safe. Teachers that can't cut the instructional mustard of course will cry the loudest.

Contrary to popular belief, Mr. Yarrell has never been fired from any school corporation, nor has he been asked to leave. Your comments are petty, and juvenile. Mr. Yarrell will continue to put children first and address the educational and instructional needs of all children. When you understand instruction and curriculum unlike most, it is very easy to do the right thing Jeff White. It is not necessary to hide behind the coat tail of the press to vindicate a chaotic environment that you created.

I was assigned to Northwest for a brief time this past year. The screaming and yelling of Yarrell over the PA system was disruptive and unbearable. In addition, all the students ever heard were threats....no action, no follow through....the place was in chaos.....students milling in the halls all of the time...fights....near the end of school there was even a rape in the auditorium....no wonder Northwest has the lowest test scores in IPS....

If you were assigned to Northwest last year trufully, you would know that it was a well run, safe environment. Good luck with your continuing character assination. I hope that It gets you everything you deserve.

Mr. Yarrell has a policy for everyone that instuction is not to be intrupted. No PA calls are permitted during classroom instruction.

Mandarin Chinese or Kung Pao Chicken; both are nonessentials on the IPS menu.

The International Small School at Tech offers all the useful foreign language courses any of our truly interested students need. Students with a natural language curiosity for post-secondary use will enroll at Tech, and they have.

Chinese may be 'nice to have', but it's certainly not a 'need to have'.

We need our students to become fluent in the English language first and foremost. We are graduating students who aren't fluent in writing in English, speaking in English, and comprehending reading material in English.

We've become a district where we spend far more time teaching 'strategies' rather than teaching 'content'. I sat in a meeting where the presenter used a 'strategy' to teach a 'strategy' Talk about a lot of theoretical mish-mash.

Read today's Indy Star interview with Marva Collins who spoke to educators at the Expo this weekend. She nailed it!

How many Chinese teachers were hired directly by White and Johnson during their trip to the Orient? I'm talking about new hires who will be moving to Indy from China or Taiwan, not Chinese teachers who already lived in the US.

What about this cadre ruse, it was nothing but a way of not paying unemployment to people who had received RIF notices. Now they are placing these people in positions and if they don't want the position there is an implied threat that they will lose their right to be recalled. I think since they already signed up for the cadre they have positions, unless of course there really is no cadre.

    ReplyDelete
  53. AnonymousJuly 19, 2009

I am one of the "threaten" Cadre members that was told by Jane Hart-Ajabu to report to a school assignment or I would forfeit all rights to further recalls. We need to make sure the Cadre is not just a pool of substitute teachers, that is illegal with the funds and needs to be reported to DOE.

    ReplyDelete
  54. AnonymousJuly 19, 2009

The "implied" threat to cadre teachers was not implied at all. It was stated clearly in the form that RIF'd teachers had to sign. If you refuse the assignment offered to you, then you will be removed from the recall list and lose all rights. The easiest and cheapest way to locate a teacher of Chinese would be to place an ad in a professional journal or hire a headhunter. There would be no need to send Eugene White and Li-Yen Johnson to China for a trip. Let's face it...this was a paid vacation for both of them. They both like to travel. The remaining cadre teachers are going to be glorified subs and nothing more and that is illegal and a horrible waste of money. It also gave IPS the incentive to cut the daily pay for subbing by IPS retired teachers by 57%. They think they wont need retired teachers since they have so many cadre teachers to sub....I pity those poor cadre teachers...they are going to have a year from hell.

Larry Yarrell is the best thing that ever happened to Northwest High School. He doesn't "yell", he has a booming voice. He loves the students dearly and is trying his best to give them the best education possible. If this means confronting teachers when they are not doing the best teaching job possible, then that is the way it should be. Why does Mr. Yarrell have to get on the PA daily? Students know which teachers will let them dress and behave they way they want. If all teachers would follow the basic rule to check students at the beginning of each class for dress code violations, then perhaps there would be no "yelling." Students intimidate the teachers into letting them "do their thing" by being verbally abusive. Northwest is losing students because it is known that NHS is a "no play" school and students and parents don't like it that someone wants to control their behavior.

Look at the percentage of students passing ISTEP. It has gone down every year since Yarrell arrived at Northwest.

Not only is IPS cutting the pay of retired teachers who sub but they sent out a letter saying that the pay for a licensed teacher who accepts a long term assignment would be $175 per day. Indiana Code 20-28-9-7 states that a licensed teacher who completes teaching in the same position for 15 days MUST be paid the full teacher rate for that school district. Is IPS just unaware of this state law or are they trying to screw subs the same way they do contract teachers. This will be challenged. The mechanism is already in place and all we have to do is wait until a licensed teacher completes 15 days and the fun begins......

Long ago some one in personnel told me "there is state law and there is IPS policy, and we follow IPS policy". If you recall IPS lost quite a sum of money when someone decided to violate state law and shorten the school year t 177 days in the middle schools. A competent administrative team would investigage these things before rather then after they are done.

Another expample is Mary Louise announcing the five day deduction of days of pay was "non-negotiable" when in fact the move was clearly illegal. How did it feel to be standing in front of the ed center with your underware around your ankles and a stiff breese blowing up your skirt, Mary Louise?

Look at the graduatation rate of Northwest High School. 45.5%

Look at the percentage of students passing ISTEP. It has gone down every year since Yarrell arrived at Northwest.

Larry, you are not the best thing to ever happen to Northwest. You do "yell" on the PA system and our academically talented students are leaving going to Ben Davis." end quote from above

Admisistrator Kami Phelps at Arlington is one heck of a vicious, vindictive, back stabbing, phony at Arlington High School now. When we had the hateful lesbian with a lesbian lover who is caring for their artificial inseminated child, was the father the same one Michael Jackson used? Kami went after poor Julie Chandler who complained about administrators changing grades so that Broad Ripple has a large graduation class for the official record, we are talking about passing thirty students who never came to class. Yes, Greg Allen and John Shore did the changes in grades, and Allen only had photo copies of the tests. I have a copy of the signed letter from Jane Kendricks when Julie won her griveance on Allen. Why did this happen so that Broad Ripple had a large graduation class for the official record of IPS. Then Kami was told to go after Julie who was in horrible shape and walking on one leg in extreme pain. Why Kami, because she did nothing else most of the day. Kami made Julie's life hell trying to get Julie on a PIP. The poor lady was in horrible pain, but the sick phony Kami still came after her, day after day. Kami you live in a glass house and yet you threw stones, just to make Greg Allen happy. You are a sick person! That was her last year, you could of let her retire, but you did come to her funeral as phony as your life.

Northwest is not known as a school as a " no play " school but rather as a failing school. Parents are taking their children out of the school because their children are in danger , both physically and educationally. " Play " occurrs every day. If students are challenging the teachers why isn't Mr. Yarrell doing something about it ? Because he is too busy berating the teachers that are trying desperately to educate the "children" that he loves dearly. Come on ... get real.... Mr. Yarrell .

Since I don't know Mr. Yarrell I can't speak to the situation at Northwest, however I have been in several IPS high schools and have friends in all of them, administrators may "dearly love" the students but it is in the abstract, many hardly ever leave their offices, it is the teachers in the classroom, trying to reach these kids, catch their imaginations, spark in them some desire to learn that really love these kids.

"...administrators may "dearly love" the students but it is in the abstract..."

There are several very large school districts in the US where 'every' administrator is required by contract to substitute teach one day per year.

They must do this substitute teaching day in their area of teacher certification.

Its purpose is threefold: 1) keeps the administrators 'in the know' with the classroom environment, 2) saves the districts money on budgets for substitutes, and 3) makes a great PR statement from administration to students, teachers, parents, and the community.

Larry Yarrell knows about changing grades. You just wait until the end of the semester and after the teachers have put the grades on and then he changes them. He did several this spring. He even changed the grade of a student enrolled in the Internation Baccalaureate program so she could graduate. That program has withered and died under Yarrell and he has resorted to giving grades in what is supposed to be a super rigorous program. What a joke. Larry we know you read this blog and even signed up as a follower, defend your changing of those grades.

This is an interesting and theraputic blog. As a retiree, classifed employee of IPS, there are, oh so many stories. The IPS motto is "Do it until we get caught".

It used to be against the contract for administrators to correct a teacher in front of others (teachers, parents, students) as well as being rude and unprofessional. This rule should still be in effect under what is termed "past practice". Here is my question, have you been corrected, yelled at, or challenged by an administrator in front of students, your colleagues or parents?

I had one administrator who would bring a student back to you, after you had sent him/her out for cursing you. His response was, " He/she said he didn't say it." Sometimes I just wanted to SCREAM!!!! However, I would say calmly to the student & principal, " Yes, John Doe called me a bitch!" Of course, this would rile the student up who would begin shouting " No, I didn't."
