The $83,491.00 Question

If IPS is supposed to be broke and have money problems, could someone please explain the following hire?

Basil Mawbey
$83,491
Activities director BRHS
Board Documents 8-11-09

Doesn't BRHS already have an activities director? And does she make $83,000 a year? Do any other high schools have two activity directors? Is this really a good way to spend money?

  3. He has to run to the nearby Kroger and get more Hot Pockets when Linda Davis runs low. I wonder who he is related to.

    ReplyDelete
  4. ok, the hot pocket stuff was funny at first, but now it is just getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Believe me, no Hot Pocket gets old when Linda Davis is around!!

  6. I am trying very hard to understand how posting nasty comments about Mrs. Davis advances the objective of this blog site....

    ReplyDelete
  7. This has nothing to do with Davis. It has to do with the board and superintendent hiring a basketball coach, not a teacher who coaches basketball, but someone who has been hired at an incredibly high salary, not to teach, but to satisfy the jock sniffing aspirations of the superintendent.

  8. If he'd been hired as a teacher the most they could have paid him would have been about $65,000 and he would have had to actually TEACH. Imagine that concept in a school system. If someone, anyone doesn't step up and unseat this board, using the information developed by this blog all will be lost for IPS.

  9. Posting derogatory comments about Mrs. Davis has NOTHING to do with the hiring of a basketball coach at an exorbitant salary! So, why the nasty postings???

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nice of you to repeat the posting two up. What is up with the nasty postings about her, people are still angry and upset about her hiring at BRHS, her tacky treatment of the departing teachers and her illegal dismantaling of their SBDM. That being said it would be nice to return to the topic.

Supplies are always an issue, I just got home and opened a letter from my 90 year old mother, she sent me $500 to buy supplies, I ripped the check up. If IPS can afford to pay this for a basketball coach they can buy the supplies my students need to meet the state standards.

  11. It all true about Linda Davis, just look at her with your heart and eyes open, she has serious problems. Its a shame that the Board Members voted on this huge salary, without any questions to Dr. White? The Board Members are nothing but little bobble-headed fools who need to be repalced.

  12. BRHS is a well-run building with high student and teacher morale. Mrs. Davis must be doing something right!!!

  13. This position for activities director was posted on August 10, 2009. Yet, it was listed as posted for more than a month. When, calling to find out whom to talk to about this position no one knew anything about it. After talking with about four people I was told it was filled. Now that is a quick hire, sounds odd. What do we think?

  14. Lightening speed, posted on the tenth, filled on the eleventh. Immoral.

  15. Linda Davis did not dismantle the SBDM, Jane Kendrick did. I have a friend who teaches there and they are having elections for the SBDM this week.

  16. I am actually interested in reading what teachers have to say about teaching in IPS--the good and the not so good. I'm also interested in reading the ideas teachers and others have about improving student performance. But the vicious personal attacks should be removed immediately by the blogmaster, otherwise the site will lose all credibility. And don't use the free speech argument because it doesn't work here. This site isn't government, it's a private blog, so no free speech rights exist here.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree. Personal, vicious attacks should be removed.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Let's here from other high schools, do you have a full time activity director? One or two? Come on Arlington, Washington, Tech, Northwest, Manual, Washington. Just post your answer and school, it isn't hard.

    ReplyDelete
  19. To the person who believed it was Jane who dismantaled BRHS SBDM, put a tooth under the pillow, a fairy will bring you a shiny quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mawbey was brought in from the outside to coach the Varsity Boys Basketball team. The created a position for him, JUST like they did for Frank Kendrick. Supposedly, he is a friend of Dr. White's. Aren't they all?

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is just wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's fucked up man!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Creating a position just to hire a basketball coach when money is soooo tight is a slap in the face to all teachers. That money could have been used to hire two more classroom teachers and lower the class size in my elementary where teachers are dealing with 30+ students and split classes. That would have been putting children first and might have some impact on raising test scores. I am furious that Basil Mawbey was approved by the school board!! Shame on Dr. White for this horrible waste of money.

  24. ",,, otherwise the site will lose all credibility."

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Good one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. And when Dr. White does crap like this it certainly destroys his credibility when he asks for more money from the legislature. But why would he care, he's only in it for the cash and the glory, not the hearts, souls, minds and futures of the students.

30 plus kids in an elementary class makes me want to weep. We keep hearing we need to use "best practices" and "research", well how about the Tennessee Class Size Study or STAR Study that prove the benefit of small class sizes in the first three grades and it's long term effictiveness at raising "at risk" kids into the "normal" range, and how even when they return to more traditional class sizes they don't lose the boost they get from the small class sizes in grades one through three.
    http://www.heros-inc.org/star.htm

Actually when you add in what he'll probably get on top of his salary as "Activities Director" for coaching basketball (I believe it is 1.5% of his base salary, but that is the old contract) he is probably worth three beginning teachers.

    Basil Mawbey

    Coach’s retirement will leave void

The announcement last week that Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame coach Basil Mawbey is retiring after 37 seasons on the hardwood marked the end of an era for prep basketball at Lewis Cass High School, the Loganland area and Indiana as a whole.***

Mawbey is 67 years old. He graduated from high school in 1960.

  27. We hope Mawbey enjoys the warm winter weather here in Indy. Read below.

Hall of Famer Mawbey calls it quits

    Dave Kitchell
    For the Pharos-Tribune

Most coaches who resign after long, successful runs will tell you it isn’t one reason that prompts retirement — rather a variety of factors.

    Basil Mawbey is no different.

In announcing his decision Tuesday night to leave Lewis Cass High School after eight seasons and varsity boys basketball coaching after 38 years, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame coach noted his desire for change.

That includes warm weather in winter months, more time with grand children and the ability to choose what he does with his free time.

“We always wanted to go to the Maui Invitational but never could because it’s played in November. Well, we have our tickets for next year,” Mawbey said with a smile.

“We’d also like to winter in Florida and see what that’s like and be able to spend more time with the kids and (10) grandchildren. The May to July summer commitment of coaching high school basketball takes up a lot of time as well.”

  28. If that job posting was only listed for one day and if people inquired about it and were stonewalled, can't the union protest this action? I really can't believe that the union will let this pass without some kind of fuss.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Good one.

Well administration it's nice to know you can read, you might want to take a look at the ASCD brief, there was a link that took you to a story about how multitasking damages your brain. Current research tells us multitaskers loose the ability to discern the truth and differenciate important facts. These brain damaged individuals are unable to figure out what is really important and what is humor, or stress relief; To sort the wheat from the chaff, so to say. Turn of your school supplied blackberry, your portable radio, and a few other multi-tasking tools...don't bother it is too late.

  30. I hope Mawbey will be able to sell his tickets to the Maui invitational-we expect our "teachers" to be in school during the month of November-unless that was part of his deal with his buddy, Dr. White. This is an outrageous hire and shows such disrespect for taxpayers, teachers, but most of all STUDENTS!

  31. When will the school board wake up??

  32. "When will the school board wake up?"

I find that there are 3 decent Board memebers. Not enough to own a vote. That being said, I also find that hte three I have some respect for are afraid of rocking the boat.

I do know of a very vocal parent, who has gone head to head with White and the board, and usually wins, will be running for school board. If teachers want someone on their side, then they need to vote this person in. It's an at large seat that will be available.

  33. It is time for Mary Bush and the other Eugene White sycophants to be removed from the board. We need well known candidates to replace them.

  34. Mary Bush should of been replaced 20 years ago.

  37. Like it has been said, White sought out Mawbey. The man wasn't even interested, and I am willing to bet that there were other people in IPS that applied for that coaching position. Why are we hiring outside of the district when we were RIF'ing teachers?
How can White be brought down? Is it even possible?
Mary Busch is a joke. So is the Reverend Michael D. Brown. They need to be gone! They are not helping children...they are hurting them!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I may be wrong, but didn't Dr. White once propose that each high school have a major sport, such as enrolling/assigning the best basketball athletes to BRHS, football to Washington and so forth.
It didn't seem feasible at the time, but, you know there are no rules that can't be broken.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So your saying there is a cultural imperative that says "field winning sports teams". I don't remember that one.

  40. The football coach at my school has no classes. He covers the GLC room sometimes when the co-ordinator of GLC is gone on lunch. Not much else. Guess it is the new trend in the basketball and coaching position. Should switch from my area into athletics since coaches are getting the slide.

He is free to have his coaches go around and strong arm staff to change grades for his players. He has the personality of a snobish English gentleman when you try to talk with him.

Hey at least the B.R. position was posted. Other high profile positions in our district just usually get a candidate with no postings. Just look at heads of athletics and basketball at Shortridge, Marshall, Attucks, and Tech. No posting just announcements, according to a person who keeps applying for such positions in our district when they are posted. (Not sure if he is just a fool or dedicated. Dr. White only wants his pupets and people who will get his name in the paper.)

Guess that is what Dr.White wants.

Wish this site had gramar check and spelling. Typing fast inbetween errands at my evening job. Sure I have made some errors above. Sue me! Sorry.

  41. Dr. White when he arrived in order to have IPS compete with the North Centrals, Carmels, Center Groves, etc. wanted "Sports Magnets" and the virtual elemination of all minor sports.

I believe it was three schools would have the big ones. Football, Basketball, Baseball. Some schools (one or two) would have Softball.

Such as Tennis, Golf, Swimming, Cross Country.

According to our tennis coach. Dr. White basically threatened the elimination of minor sports if they did not start fielding JV and Freshman teams.

The coach mentioned it was "lunny" as it was called. Saying IPS does not even fund Tennis and Cross Country until H.S. (other than a camp). So in those sports kids are reluctant and are talked into them by their sophmore years. Never really gaining a lot of kids. The coach said they are basically being set up by Dr. White.

Oh well! He will have more money to hire other coaches who never set foot in a classroom. Who cares about the well developed child anymore anyway. We all have to have STATE Championship Trophies in the high profile sports. Minor sports for our inner city kids is a waste.

What good does running, golfing, and tennis do anyway. I mean no one who is anyone plays or does those things. Right!

I agree about a spell check or gram check. BTW

    ReplyDelete
  42. Never mind the fact that participating in ANY extra curricular activity virtually assures you that a student will not drop out.

We need more extra curriculars not less. Dr. White thinks the score board is what tells you that you won, he is wrong.

I've seen kids participate in sports who get no support from parents, they through their own initative get to sports camps, and games. Sometimes their parents show up on senior or parent night and whine they have to pay for a ticket, and it is the only time they ever see their child play. I've seen coaches play kids that wouldn't have a chance of playing in any other districts, a girl who ran track with CP, another who despite spectrum disorders swam with the team. These kids are triumphing over their circumstances.

Compare that to Chatard, their swim team practices at the Y on the fort, 40 to 50 kids are chauffered to the Y at 5:30 am, and then the parents wait until it is time to take them to school. Their parents show up at tennis, softball, track, and baseball practice with an array of nutritious snacks, and show up at the events to cheer their children on.

Our students win when they put on the uniform and participate. Student athletes ROCK

  43. My feet hurt and I just got home from a full day at school teaching/grading/planning. It is nearing 9:00 P.M. I cannot stand what is going on in IPS. My smallest class is 46. Something is wrong with this picture.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Student Athletes Rock! I so agree.....

    ReplyDelete
  45. I will second and AMEN! !To the support for out Student Athletes who over come all that life puts in front of them.

I hope Dr. White reads this blog and considers what we are saying.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Considers the fact that there is more going on with our students. In some some cases. Most that is wins and losses are the least of concern for our students.

We loose so many kids that coaches and club sponsor would keep if we did not have the grade and attendance policy. Many kids who before Dr. Pritchett were kept in school by the sports (hey what ever keeps them coming in my opinion). Why a district like IPS would with its student problems would have the highest standards in the state to participate is beyond me.

BTW: As long as we have the standards. Why are they not inforced for all after school activities (since it is an IPS policy). Kids get cut by football still play in the band at the games, cheer, and participate in ROTC Rifle teams representing our schools. Why is one segment standing out?

Why the higher ups don't want to crush those programs. Just the sports ones. That is why!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Now we discover the emergency meeting held on the 11th, that everyone believed was held to approve the new contract, was actually a ruse to hire this man. If the citizens of this city re-elect a single member of this board it will be a sin. Clean house on the board and in the senior administration.
