Dear Dr. White

Eugene,

Thanks for mentioning this blog in your speech the other day. IPS B.S. is happy to know that you read it, or at least your staff does.

IPS B.S. thinks you should know that talking about this blog is all you will be able to do about it. It's not written on IPS time nor using IPS resources.

This is a forum for teachers and staff to get out the truth about the district without the B.S. filter that comes from your administration.

You can talk about IPS B.S. all you want, but that's all you will be able to do, is talk.

Love,

IPS B.S.

P.S. You should have asked the board to put a clothing allowance in your contract because your wardrobe is as tired as your rhetoric.

  1. The sad thing is that he does have a clothing allowance. Did anyone notice that he was wearing little red slippers like the pope? He could also buy them in a size that fits.

  2. No, the really sad thing is the author resorts to juvenile retoric as opposed to legitimate concerns and/or suggestions to fix 'em. The jokes/digs/barbs are not funny, nor a mature way to get things done.

If we all agree that the administration is difficult to work with (nothing short of a pain in the ass), do we think acting like babies is the best way to fix things?

Should we be better than them, or should we treat others like we want to be treated?

  3. Re: 6:39 AM

I agree. This blog is a forum for sharing/discussing/maybe even venting our concerns about IPS; however, how an administrator dresses is of little concern to me.

  4. I think it would be better if we tried to stay professional. And it's better to offer ideas for solutions instead of taking potshots, even though that is easier and more fun to do!

  5. Humor is often used to defuse situations, better to laugh at him behind his back then for him to suffer the same fate as Adams. While I disagree with almost everything he does, I believe he sincerely believes he is doing the right thing.
Sincerely believing something does not make it true.

  6. Its interesting that Dr. White used the newspapers to demean the IPS teachers but, now that teachers have a vehicle to communicate with the public, he takes offense to the same behavior when it is directed toward him.

  7. Dr. White is not quite the agent of change he purports to be. He is offended when his ideas for change are resisted but, on the other hand, he arrogantly depreciates Dr. Bennett and Dr. Bennett's changes. (I understand he doesn't think much of Evan Bayh, either; and we all know what he thinks of Mitch Daniels).

  8. Two items regarding 10 AM presentation, 8/10/2009

    1) Hands-on project-based progress was recognized, praised, and recommended, with attention paid to the only 100% on the secondary charts.

That statement was immediately followed by:

    2) Discussion of how we should visit the media library at Scips to borrow a video so our children can learn ALL about how a bill becomes law.

Yes, we elementary teachers should not have had to hear public putdowns. We would never do that to our students.

(I hope I never hear the word "gooder" again, especially by a top administrator with a PhD.....Dr. Giles!)

  9. We all know how White works. He feeds off of controversy. We are all doing a good job; to me it is hard to take him seriously when I have yet to see him in my school (been in the same school for 10 years) since he has been our Superintendent. Great comment about his hypocrisy. He can dish out criticism to teachers, Dr. Bennet, etc, but he sure can't take it!
As to his comment about all of us being out of a job if this were the business world, I agree. His district has made minimal gains - in his words - so who is ultimately at fault? He needs to go. He is starting to realize that we are all seeing through the smoke and mirrors (his fancy clothes and tough guy talk). He isn't up to the challenge.

Then I immediately went back to my high school and heard the Principal tell us plainly that he did NOT want to see us 'showing videos' during class time! Anyone else hear that from the Arlington Principal? Wow, I thought, I'm hearing two entirely different stories in the same morning.

  11. The comment about the video came during the SECOND presentation, where we elementary teachers were able to hear and see all the weaknesses of all of the high schools.

Apparently videos are ok in K-6.

Now, be sure to discard all the dvds and cds that come with your 7-12 teacher materials, OK?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Videos are an interesting conundrum. First they expose students to things they wouldn't otherwise be able to see, Paris, Jacob Lawrence working, nuclear fusion, Romeo and Juliet performed, this makes them wonderful.

The problem is that as soon as you turn them on the students believe that what they are seeing is not important, and it is play time. It is as much work to show a DVD or video and keep the kids focused, as it is to do any other teaching.

This I blame on parents and teachers who use DVD's and TV as babysitters. If you have indoor recess pop in a video. Need a treat, show a video. Kids quickly learn to tune them out.

  13. To 3:45 PM...Dr. White made the SAME comment regarding bringing students to the SCIP's library to the SECONDARY 8 AM meeting. Regarding your comment about being able to see all the weaknesses of all of the high schools: You know that Dr. White said that the elementary schools were not sending students prepared to perform at the secondary grade levels. Dr. White tries to pit each division against each other.

I am curious why Dr. White is promoting field trips to SCIP's when in the past few years educational field trips were NOT approved because of bus expenses and lost instructional time.

I would think that the IT Dept. might develop a distance learning method to use the SCIP's library material within each school building and eliminate the issue of lost instructional time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He doesn't want you to take your class to the bus garage, aka SCIP's, he wants you to get in your car and drive down there. Use your own gas, and don't try to fill up at the IPS pumps, he gets to do that, not you. There will be no lost instructional time since you must do this on your own time.

Field trips are a waste of time, what do you want? Students who have cultural literacy? Silly me.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I believe the cut back on field trips is a result of 'our own'. Last year, an Arlington teacher had a field trip approved, yes approved, to go to the Mall. Go figure. This was a content area teacher, not a SpEd teacher taking the kids into the community to learn to shop or buy food. They just went to the Mall for fun. The students, naturally, got into all kinds of mischief, including shoplifting.

A similar field trip, also approved, to the Zoo by a group of Over/Under Marshall students resulted in nothing but bad things.

Unfortunately, some rather overly laid-back and disorganized teachers have ruined it for us all.

  16. Well, it sure didn't take this blog long to become a joke. It's nothing but petty comments and witch trial mentality towards those who dare to point out that many of the posts here make IPS teachers look trashy at best. What could have been an outlet to actually give the central office pause to reflect has become nothing more than a "cyber" Jerry Springer Show they can shrug off and correctly demean. Good job.

  17. He said that we are to speak with the children but when he came to my school, he turned his back to them. He wouldn't make eye contact with them. When one student asked if they could show him a presentation, he said he didn't have time. He couldn't even rearrange his schedule by 5 minutes. What do you think that student will remember when Dr. White starts talking?

    ReplyDelete
  18. IPS must have the worst collection of teachers in the world. I would never send my child to an IPS school. You all are a collection of trash. Now I understand why the media DOGS out IPS.

Well damn! You need to pat your principal on the back. I just looked at your test scores, and your ass should be teaching. This school is sad. Instead of you spending time on this blog you should have your ass in a book preparing a lesson. How did your students do on the ISTEP exam?Anoun 3:30 what do you teach? - - - NOTHING!

  20. It is nice to know that the old adage about Greenwood and her teachers at Arlington still holds true.
"There are teachers at Arlington who can't breathe till Jackie Greenwood farts". You have obviously had your ass in a book, the rest of us have our noses in books, using out brains, not our butts.

The base nature of your comments exposes your intellect and ability. Someone should have taught you better manners, and higher order thinking skills.

  21. To the IPS BS blogmasters:

I give this place until Christmas. Pretty soon, the kids are going to find out about it, and when that happens, how long do you think it will take them to overrun the discussions with teacher bashing? Add in the anonymous nature, and using teachers' names when making outlandish claims will be the norm. A precedent has been set here, and I doubt if teachers will handle their names dragged through the mud very well. Believe me, not all students love their teachers, and this place, which has become little more than a bathroom wall, will take on a more "interesting" tone.

  22. I have much more faith in our students than you have presented. Most students appreciate and respect what we do and who we are. [Not all] there is no way that our students could verbally abuse us worse than Eugene White and SOME of his administrators do. I have no fear that IPS BS is here to stay. The truth has to be told and it will not come from the Ed. Center.

  23. I am a parent and homeowner in Center Township. After reviewing the IDOE data on our neighborhood elementary school, I was surprised and disgusted. Not one homeowner in our neighborhood sends a child to the neighborhood school. It is supposedly a magnet school, but has not made AYP in two years. That school only has 3 cells, so what is the problem?
After reading the comments on this blog, I am beginning to see the problem: whining, back stabbing "teachers" who blame all problems on administration.
I just signed my Kindergartener up for Catholic school. Have a nice life!

  24. Your story doesn't add up. If you're in an IPS neighborhood where nobody sends their children to the boundary school, then why would they all send their children to the same, poor-performing magnet school instead of one of the high-performing ones (of which there are several). And having experienced both, I was not impressed with Catholic School and have been VERY pleased with Center for Inquiry. (But yeah, I'm not impressed with the blaming on this website either. Fortunately, I don't encounter much of this attitude with my kids' teachers.)

  25. I am an IPS teacher and I am embarrassed by this whole thing.

  26. Being a teacher myself, not in IPS but with a spouse that is, I am suprised about the unprofessionalism that is displayed here. Your district is beat up all of the time in the media, but this blog sure doesn't help to change that mentality. I understand your frustrations... All teachers feel them no matter where you teach. But do you really want that tainted image the media has exploited to be perpetuated by this blog to the community stakeholders that are reading it? It's one thing to vent to a colleague after school, but quite different to let the world wide web in on it too! Kudos to all the IPS workers that keep the children the focus, not what the superintendent is wearing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with your thoughts, 6:13. And, to add to them, the person(s) who created IPS-BS must be very brave, and unconcerned that nothing in cyberspace is ever totally anonymous...things have a way of returning to bite you in the a$s.

  28. I am an IPS teacher and I love the blog! I love the truth coming out about IPS and not the lies that Mary Louis dishes out to the public.

  29. 12:13, I would love to send my kid to C of I or one of the Montessori magnets. However, we did not win a spot through the lottery. Our boundary school is also a math & science magnet. No homeowner in the neighborhood sends their kids there. Homeowners' kids go to 70, Key, 56, 91, and C of I; others go to charters, private schools, or homeschool.
The kids whose parents rent the duplexes in the neighborhood go to the boundary school. These families let their kids run the streets past 10pm. One child (who I know to be a 4th grader at the boundary school this year) knocked on my door at 9:30 last night, asking if my son could come out and play! This child also hangs around at dinner most nights, saying that his mother isn't going to cook dinner. Sadly, he is not the only one; we feed up to 6 extra kids most nights, all from the Section 8 duplexes.
As a parent, I must choose. Should my son go to school with kids who are sleepy, hungry, and starving for attention? Should he spend 6 hours a day waiting to learn while the teachers deal with discipline problems? Or should he get to go to a school where children are prepared to learn?
Good luck this year. I wish you strength for the tasks ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 6:10, yeah I'd keep your kids in Catholic school until you get into one of the good magnets. There are also a few good charters, but the good ones have waiting lists. I'm in the same boat as far as sympathizing with the kids near my neighborhood, but the boundary school will let the good students fall through the cracks, plus it isn't safe, so that's not a consideration.

  31. 12:13 I'm an IPS teacher and I wouldn't send my own child to IPS either, for exactly the reasons you mentioned, my child is not a guinea pig.

  32. I am not a fan of home schooling but I would absolutely home school my kids before I sent them to ANY IPS school. I see what goes on in these schools and throwing my kids in the middle of chaos and mediocrity is not my idea of being a good parent. Don't get me wrong, there are some good things happening and some good people in some places within IPS. But there are too many bad things going on making the good nearly irrelavant.

  33. Oh it is funny as Hell what Dr. White wears. I am a Black woman and its often a joke that black me wear those skittle colored clothing. Ok, that may be true on the nightlife-club scene but trust and believe you will not find a black man on Wall street, IBM,Yale, or the White House for that matter in a Royal Blue suit, with Royal blue shoes, and Royal blue socks. I was at the Ed Center in Wayne Township last year and Dr. White walked out the building in that "Get-up" I was embarrassed for IPS and on top of that mad as HELL! I mean come on he was not professionally dressed at all. He actually looked like he jumped straight out of a "In Living Color" skit (Not cute one bit)....

I understand that this blog is for educators to come together and express this that or the other. I just don't see how he can put forth a dress code for employees and he comes in and represent IPS looking like a bag of Skittles tasting the rainbow.

My advise to Dr. White, take those damn clown suits back to circus and dress the way you are expecting others to dress. You get a clothing allowance, then you should be doing better
