Extra! Extra! Read All About It

Did anyone read Matt Tully's story today on Manual High. IPS B.S. thought it was pretty interesting. What did you think?

  1. I think its interesting how the powers that be are allowing Tully to roam freely through IPS buildings. We'll see how long it lasts if this creates too much heat for them.

  2. I thought it was a decent article for Tully who is usually very anti IPS.......

  3. Too few social workers are placed in the high schools!

  4. Maybe this will shed some light on the problems facing IPS. Even Tully was only able to find one poor teacher so far. I bet he only finds a few more out of the whole school. Go IPS!

  5. omg! It is so much bigger than the article this morning. Matt has several blog posts about Manual on indystar about Manual. I encourage everyone to go read all of the posts. Actually, if al of Indy would, the wake up call about all of IPS just might be heard. I know it is like this district-wide. The public finds it too convenient to place the blame on us.

  6. I know our stats are bad but the public doesn't realize the challenges our students have. Most want to do well but life has put so many barriers in their paths. Articles like this may open some eyes to what we are trying to do. While we all know a teacher or two who are not doing a good job, we KNOW that most of us work long hard hours and really care. What I find most frustrating is that our own superintendent is in that chorus of voices calling us lazy, incompetent and uncaring. Sometimes I wonder how well I would have done in circumstances that many of our students experience.

  7. News from the Shoe Patrol:

Dr. Li-Yen Johnson was spotted in a pair of whimsical lilac opened-toed mule wedges that coordinated perfectly with her lilac pants ensemble on Friday. She had a spectacular pedicure, and her toe nails were colored a killer shade of OPI hot coral.

  8. Tully IS anti-IPS as is his idiot friend Abdul from 1430. IPS "bad"- charter and private schools "wonderful!" My school gets kids from charter schools all the time and they are always way behind grade level. When you ask the younger students, "What did you do at your other school?" They usually reply, "Uh..color alot." I doubt Abdul or Tully would cover that story.

  9. Now what exactly does your little rant have to do with the issue at hand? You truly are missing the point. Additionally, you give those with no faith in us the opportunity to laugh without merit.

  11. Belated news on from the Fashion Patrol:

In keeping with the first day of school festivities, Dr. Li-Yen Johnson wore a stunning jade green silk sheath cap-sleeved dress accesorized with muted gold metallic peep-toed pumps.

Indianapolis Public Schools are missing a few thousand students.

According to my friends over at RTV 6, IPS was scheduled to have between 33,000 and 34,000 students show up in its classrooms, however as of Friday, there were slightly more than 30,000 students in school.

School officials hope to have 2,000 more students in class by September 11, which is the day the District does its official headcount. But even if the District does reach that goal, there are still 1,000-2,000 students still missing.

Will someone please explain to me how so many kids go missing, and more importantly, how do these parents “forget” to send their kids to school. The RTV 6 story listed a number of reasons, I call them excuses. My personal favorite was the parent at the the District Office who didn’t know what school her kid was attending.

However, I’m willing to bet most of these people know when to get their hair and nails done or know when to DVR Oprah and NASCAR or know what day the government check arrives.

There is no excuse for children missing school, particularly for most of these children where education is their only hope for a way to a better life. But once again, it goes to my belief that if parents don’t put a value of education, you can’t expect that to be passed on to their kids."

It doesn't sound like he is anti IPS, it sounds like he is a realist about many of our kids parents, and the problems we face.

His blog IndianaBarrister is a good read.
